This work presents the bee-up tool, which has been developed with teaching about conceptual models and modelling in mind and used as such for several semesters. It is an implementation which integrates several modelling languages that gained wide popularity and further extends them in one overarching meta-model. Among others the included modelling languages are the Business Process Model and Notation (bPMN), Event-driven Process Chains (ePC), Entity-Relationship models (eR), the Unified Modeling Language (uML) and petri Nets, giving bee-up its name. Besides allowing the creation of models, bee-up also provides functionality for gaining the value of models and means to extend the available functionality by the user. Dynamic searchable symmetric encryption (DSSE) enables users to delegate the keyword search over dynamically updated encrypted databases to an honest-but-curious server without losing keyword privacy. This paper studies a new and practical security risk to DSSE, namely, secret key compromise (e.g., a user’s secret key is leaked or stolen), which threatens all the security guarantees offered by existing DSSE schemes. To address this open problem, we introduce the notion of searchable encryption with key-update (SEKU) that provides users with the option of non-interactive key updates. We further define the notion of post-compromise secure with respect to leakage functions to study whether DSSE schemes can still provide data security after the client’s secret key is compromised. We demonstrate that post-compromise security is achievable with a proposed protocol called "Bamboo". Interestingly, the leakage functions of Bamboo satisfy the requirements for both forward and backward security. We conduct a performance evaluation of Bamboo using a real-world dataset and compare its runtime efficiency with the existing forward-and-backward secure DSSE schemes. The research herein proposes a position control system, designed for a single-port surgical robot, based on the lockup table method. The programmable logic controller (PLC) was implemented to move the single- port surgical robot and handle laparoscope and surgical instruments with feedback control. The output responses of the desired angle were investigated under several conditions. The rotating angle allows movement of the laparoscope in the range of -10o to +10o. The error of the desired position of the designed system was less than approximately ± 0.1o. Moreover, the output data from several experiments may be employed to improve the open-loop control systems. This system is also capable of providing computer vision task implementation, enabling semi- automatic or automatic surgery in the future. © 2022 IEEE.

Patients in hospitals frequently exhibit psychological issues such as sadness, pessimism, eccentricity, and anxiety. However, hospitals normally lack tools and facilities to continuously monitor the psychological health of patients. It is desirable to identify depression in patients so that it can be managed by instantly providing better therapy. This can be possible by advances in machine learning for image processing with notable applications in the domain of emotion recognition using facial expressions. In this paper, we have proposed two different methods, i.e. facial expression detection and voice analysis, to predict emotions. For facial expression recognition, we have used two approaches, one is the use of Gabor filters for feature extraction with support vector machine for classification and another is using convolutional neural network (CNN). For voice analysis, we extracted mel-frequency cepstral coefficients from speech data and, based on those features, predicted the emotions of the speech using a CNN model. Experimental results show that our proposed emotion recognition methods obtained high accuracy and thus could be potentially deployed to real-world applications. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Cognitive biases, Robo advisor and investment decision psychology: An investor's perspective from New York stock exchange

Investment decision making is a systematic process that becomes complex due to cognitive biases and risk perceptions. For rational investment decision making, the investors in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) tend to seek automated investment solutions through Robo Advisors and the volume of such trades is mounting. However, there is dearth of studies that depict the role of cognitive biases, Robo Advisor and risk perception in investment decision psychology. Therefore, this study aims to empirically investigate the impact of cognitive biases on investment decision making of investors with the underlying role of risk perception and moderating role of Robo Advisors. The study applies the time lag research design to analyze the mediation and moderation conceptual model through structural equation modeling by using SMART PLS. The data is collected through survey questionnaire from individual investors who trade at NYSE. The empirical findings of structural equation modeling revealed that availability, price anchoring, loss aversion, representative and overconfidence bias impact the risk perception, and the investment decision making. Furthermore, Robo Advisor significantly moderates the relationship between all the cognitive biases and investment decision making, except for overconfidence bias. In addition, this research provides novel contributions to the theory as it links cognitive biases with investment decision through risk perception that develops an underlying mechanism to channelize the impact of cognitive biases on investment decision making. Likewise, inclusion of robo-advisors highlights the crucial role that contributes to weakening the adverse effect of cognitive biases on investment decision making in technology driven financial market. The results are valuable for investors as they get a clear vision of the impact of biases and risk perception during their investment decision making. This paper presents the development of an object detection system based on the deep learning approach of computer vision to support the laparoscopic surgical robotic position control system. The system comprises two main phases, the training phase, and the real-time operating phase. In the training phase, a modified YOLOv4 algorithm is proposed to be adopted within the Darknet framework for training the weights of detection models. The best detection model is then selected to be assigned to the object detector in the real-time operating phase. The validation result of the detection model across the experiment datasets is 90% accuracy on average during the training phase. To validate the viability of real-time object detection, the proposed system was implemented in two test-cases of gynecologic surgery with the soft-body cadavers. © 2022 IEEE.

Difficulties in replication and reproducibility of empirical evidences in machine learning research have become a prominent topic in recent years. Ensuring that machine learning research results are sound and reliable requires reproducibility, which verifies the reliability of research findings using the same code and data. This promotes open and accessible research, robust experimental workflows, and the rapid integration of new findings. Evaluating the degree to which research publications support these different aspects of reproducibility is one goal of the present work. For this we introduce an ontology of reproducibility in machine learning and apply it to methods for graph neural networks. Building on these efforts we turn towards another critical challenge in machine learning, namely the curse of dimensionality, which poses challenges in data collection, representation, and analysis, making it harder to find representative data and impeding the training and inference processes. Traditional navigational bronchoscopy procedures rely on preprocedural computed tomography (CT) and intraoperative chest radiography and cone-beam CT (CBCT) to biopsy peripheral lung lesions. This navigational approach is challenging due to the projective nature of radiography, and the high radiation dose, long imaging time, and large footprints of CBCT. Digital tomosynthesis (DTS) is considered an attractive alternative combining the advantages of radiography and CBCT. Only the depth resolution cannot match a full CBCT image due to the limited angle acquisition. To address this issue, preoperative CT is a good auxiliary in guiding bronchoscopy interventions. Nevertheless, CT-to-body divergence caused by anatomic changes and respiratory motion, hinders the effective use of CT imaging. To mitigate CT-to-body divergence, we propose a novel deformable 3D/3D CT-to-DTS registration algorithm employing a multistage, multiresolution approach and using affine and elastic B-spline transformation models with bone and lung mask images. A multiresolution strategy with a Gaussian image pyramid and a multigrid strategy within the B-spline model are applied. The normalized correlation coefficient is included in the cost function for the affine model and a multimetric weighted cost function is used for the B-spline model, with weights determined heuristically. Tested on simulated and real patient bronchoscopy data, the algorithm yields promising results. Assessed qualitatively by visual inspection and quantitatively by computing the Dice coefficient (DC) and the average symmetric surface distance (ASSD), the algorithm achieves mean DC of 0.82±0.05 and 0.74±0.05, and mean ASSD of 0.65±0.29mm and 0.93±0.43mm for simulated and real data, respectively. This algorithm lays the groundwork for CT-aided intraoperative DTS imaging in image-guided bronchoscopy interventions with future studies focusing on automated metric weight setting. © 2024

The maritime industry contributes to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for approximately 2.89 % of global emissions. With the International Maritime Organization (IMO) setting ambitious goals to reduce carbon emissions by 50 % by 2050, there is a pressing need for effective strategies in the maritime industry. This study examines the strategic interactions between governments, port authorities, and shipping companies by utilizing game theory to explore dynamic and evolving behaviors in carbon emission reduction efforts. By establishing a trilateral game model, the research provides insights into the complex interplay of incentives and deterrents that influence stakeholder actions. Key scenarios analyzed include the net incremental benefits of adopting specific strategies by port authorities and the additional costs incurred by shipping companies when implementing green practices. The findings indicate that port authorities can achieve significant benefits by adopting collaborative strategies, supported by government incentives to offset initial high costs, while for shipping companies, the analysis underscores the importance of weighing additional costs against potential operational efficiencies and market advantages. The study offers targeted policy recommendations to promote the development of a low-carbon maritime industry, highlighting the potential of green fuels and advanced technologies in achieving sustainable maritime operations. This research fills a critical gap in understanding the strategic behaviors driving emission reductions in maritime industry, contributing to broader efforts in combating global climate change. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
