Significant advancements in production technology, materials, component design, and data science foster innovation across industries, including biomanufacturing. Ceramic materials, adapted additive manufacturing processes, and novel construction methods hold immense innovation potential due to ceramics' exceptional thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties. Additive manufacturing enables the creation of intricate ceramic components with unprecedented functionality. Hybridizing manufacturing technologies and materials facilitates direct integration of additional features like sensors and actuators. Despite their potential, ceramic materials remain underutilized. This article aims to spark a discourse on leveraging high-performance ceramic components in biomanufacturing, leveraging superior material properties, innovative design methods, additive manufacturing, process data analysis, and AI. © 2024 The Authors.

Boundary accumulations of active rods in microchannels with elliptical cross-section

Many motile microorganisms and bio-mimetic micro-particles have been successfully modeled as active rods - elongated bodies capable of self-propulsion. A hallmark of active rod dynamics under confinement is their tendency to accumulate at the walls. Unlike passive particles, which typically sediment and cease their motion at the wall, accumulated active rods continue to move along the wall, reorient, and may even escape from it. The dynamics of active rods at the wall and those away from it result in complex and non-trivial distributions. In this work, we examine the effects of wall curvature on active rod distribution by studying elliptical perturbations of tube-like microchannels, that is, the cylindrical confinement with a circular cross-section, common in both nature and various applications. By developing a computational model for individual active rods and conducting Monte Carlo simulations, we discovered that active rods tend to concentrate at locations with the highest wall curvature. We then investigated how the distribution of active rod accumulation depends on the background flow and orientation diffusion. Finally, we used a simplified mathematical model to explain why active rods preferentially accumulate at high-curvature locations. © 2024, CC BY.

Developing Measurement-Informed Methane Emissions Inventory Estimates at Midstream Compressor Stations

Natural gas transmissions and storage compressor stations account for the largest share of anthropogenic methane (CH4) emissions in New York State (NYS). Yet, NYS’s CH4emissions inventory is based on measurements that are a decade old and potentially unlikely to be representative of NYS operations. Here, we present results from a comprehensive, multiscale aerial CH4measurement campaign across all NYS transmission and storage compressor stations. We find a skewed emissions distribution, with 20% of stations accounting for 74% of total CH4emissions. Emissions at engine-driven compressor stations are, on average, 3–4× higher than emissions at turbine-driven compressor stations, thus demonstrating the need for separate emissions factors for engine- and turbine-drive compressor stations. Overall, measurement-informed emissions inventory from midstream transmission and storage compressor stations in NYS is 72% and 69% lower than the current NYS inventory, respectively. We estimate updated emissions factors of 464 [95% CI: 162–920] metric ton (MT) CH4/station/yr and 139 [97, 191] MT CH4/station/yr for engine- and turbine-based transmission compressor stations, respectively. Similarly, we estimate an updated emissions factor of 413 [164, 733] MT CH4/station/yr for engine-based storage compressor stations. These updated emissions factors, along with improved activity data, enable effective reconciliation of NYS inventory with measured *** study reports on the first large-scale measurement of methane emissions from midstream compressor stations in New York and provides a scalable approach to reconcile and update official emission inventories.

The energy Internet (EI) presents a novel paradigm for renewable energy distribution that utilizes communication and computing technologies to revolutionize the conventional intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) and power grid into a structure that provides assistance to open innovation. The EI offers sustainable and bidirectional transmission for the improvement and analysis of energy convention among electric vehicles (EVs) and service providers. To ensure efficient, reliable, and secure operation, EI must be safe from security attacks. Therefore, efficient and secure key negotiation is a significant issue for the EI-based Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) architecture. Thus, to ensure the system's security, we have devised a robust scheme to facilitate a secure key agreement between the entities involved for the secure and efficient renewable energy distribution for the EI-based energy vehicles in V2G. The devised scheme's robustness is solicited through the widely accepted formal random or real (RoR) model. In addition, the informal security analysis is conducted on the devised scheme, which is evident that the designed scheme achieves all the required security features of EI-based ITS. Moreover, the performance evaluation results endorse that the designed scheme achieves the desired security and minimizes the communication, computation, and energy overhead by 29.33%, 27.94%, and 28.08% in comparison to the existing competitive schemes. © 2014 IEEE.

To capture the effect of mesoscale eddies on oceanic temperature and salinity, we take the Gent-McWilliams-Redi eddy parametrization model into account in an ocean model with outer forces consisting of the 3D primitive equations and a set of advection-diffusion equations describing the oceanic tracers of temperature and salinity. The existence of strong time-periodic ($T$-periodic) solutions for this model is established under three time-periodic outer forces without any smallness conditions, provided that the density function for pressure, temperature and salinity satisfies the certain regularity assumption. Firstly, we prove the existence of a weak $T$-periodic solution relying on the Faedo-Galerkin method, Brouwer's fixed-point theorem and a priori bounds. Secondly, we prove the global well-posedness of strong solutions for arbitrary large outer forces and initial data that are in appropriately chosen function classes. Finally, we adopt the method of the weak-strong uniqueness to obtain a strong $T$-periodic solution for this model. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Introduction: The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a technology that connects devices to collect data and conduct in-depth analysis to provide value-added services to industries. The integration of the physical and digital domains is crucial for unlocking the full potential of the IIoT, and digital twins can facilitate this integration by providing a virtual representation of real-world entities. Objectives: By combining digital twins with the IIoT, industries can simulate, predict, and control physical behaviors, enabling them to achieve broader value and support industry 4.0 and 5.0. Constituents of cooperative IIoT domains tend to interact and collaborate during their complicated operations. Methods: To secure such interaction and collaborations, we introduce a blockchain-based cross-domain authentication protocol for IIoT. The blockchain maintains only each domain's dynamic accumulator, which accumulates crucial materials derived from devices, decreasing the overhead. In addition, we use the on-chain accumulator to effectively validate the unlinkable identities of cross-domain IIoT devices. Results: The implementation of the concept reveals the fact that our protocol is efficient and reliable. This efficiency and reliability of our protocol is also substantiated through comparison with state-of-the-art literature. In contrast to related protocols, our protocol exhibits a minimum 22.67% increase in computation cost efficiency and a 16.35% rise in communication cost efficiency. Conclusion: The developed protocol guarantees data transfer security across the domain and thwarts IoT devices from potential physical attacks. Additionally, in order to protect privacy, anonymity and unlinkability are also guaranteed. © 2024

This paper studies policy evaluation with multiple data sources, especially in scenarios that involve one experimental dataset with two arms, complemented by a historical dataset generated under a single control arm. We propose novel data integration methods that linearly integrate base policy value estimators constructed based on the experimental and historical data, with weights optimized to minimize the mean square error (MSE) of the resulting combined estimator. We further apply the pessimistic principle to obtain more robust estimators, and extend these developments to sequential decision making. Theoretically, we establish non-asymptotic error bounds for the MSEs of our proposed estimators, and derive their oracle, efficiency and robustness properties across a broad spectrum of reward shift scenarios. Numerical experiments and real-data-based analyses from a ridesharing company demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed estimators.

This paper presents a novel feature extraction approach for hyperspectral images, termed Spatial-Spectral Joint Principal Component analysis (PCA) coupled with Rao distance-based t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (SSPCA-Rao-tSNE). Specifically, we apply the classical PCA method for spectral feature extraction while concurrently developing a Rao-distance-based tSNE algorithm to enhance the extraction of spatial features, particularly those with non-Euclidean structural characteristics. These spatial and spectral features are then combined through feature stacking to create spatial-spectral joint features. Furthermore, these spatial-spectral joint features are utilized in a semi-supervised graph convolutional network for hyperspectral image classification. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance achieved by our newly proposed SSPCA-Rao-tSNE approach and the corresponding semi-supervised classification method in comparison to several classical methods.

Frequently in socio-environmental sciences, models are used as tools to represent, understand, project and predict the behaviour of these complex systems. Along the modelling chain, Good Modelling Practices have been evolving that ensure—amongst others—that models are transparent and their results replicable. Whenever such models are represented in software, Good Modelling meet Good Software Practices, such as a tractable development workflow, good code, collaborative development and governance, continuous integration and deployment;and they meet Good Scientific Practices, such as attribution of copyrights and acknowledgement of intellectual property, publication of a software paper and archiving. Too often in existing socio-environmental model software, these practices have been regarded as an add-on to be considered at a later stage only;modellers have shied away from publishing their model as open source out of fear that having to add good practices is too demanding. We here argue for making a habit of following a list of simple and not so simple practices early on in the implementation of the model life cycle. We contextualise cherry-picked and hands-on practices for supporting Good Modelling Practice, and we demonstrate their application in the example context of the Viable North Sea fisheries socio-ecological systems model. © 2024, CC BY.
