For some time, medicine has been an important driver for the development of data processing and visualization techniques. Improved technology offers the capacity to generate larger and more complex data sets related to imaging and simulation. This, in turn, creates the need for more effective visualization tools for medical practitioners to interpret and utilize data in meaningful ways.
The first edition of visualization in Medicine and Life Sciences (VMLS) emerged from a workshop convened to explore the significant datavisualization challenges created by emerging technologies in the life sciences. The workshop and the book addressed questions of whether medical datavisualization approaches can be devised or improved to meet these challenges, with the promise of ultimately being adopted by medical experts.
visualization in Medicine and Life Sciences II follows the second international VMLS workshop, held in Bremerhaven, Germany, in July 2009. Internationally renowned experts from the visualization and driving application areas came together for this second workshop.
The book presents peer-reviewed research and survey papers which document and discuss the progress made, explore new approaches to datavisualization, and assess new challenges and research directions.

In this paper, we present a topological approach for simplifying continuous functions defined on volumetric domains. We introduce two atomic operations that remove pairs of critical points of the function and design a combinatorial algorithm that simplifies the Morse-Smale complex by repeated application of these operations. The Morse-Smale complex is a topological data structure that provides a compact representation of gradient flow between critical points of a function. Critical points paired by the Morse-Smale complex identify topological features and their importance. The simplification procedure leaves important critical points untouched, and is therefore useful for extracting desirable features. We also present a visualization of the simplified topology.

We study uncertainty in the dynamics of time-dependent flows by identifying barriers and enhancers to stochastic transport. This topological segmentation is closely related to the theory of Lagrangian coherent structures and is based on a recently introduced quantity, the diffusion barrier strength (DBS). The DBS is defined similar to the finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE), but incorporates diffusion during flow integration. Height ridges of the DBS indicate stochastic transport barriers and enhancers, i.e. material surfaces that are minimally or maximally diffusive. To apply these concepts to real-world data, we represent uncertainty in a flow by a stochastic differential equation that consists of a deterministic and a stochastic component modeled by a Gaussian. With this formulation we identify barriers and enhancers to stochastic transport, without performing expensive Monte Carlo simulation and with a computational complexity comparable to FTLE. In addition, we propose a complementary visualization to convey the absolute scale of uncertainties in the Lagrangian frame of reference. This enables us to study uncertainty in real-world datasets, for example due to small deviations, data reduction, or estimated from multiple ensemble runs.

The goal of the VAST challenge 2019 Mini Challenge 2 was to visualize radioactive contaminations measured by mobile and static sensors and their changes over time, allowing city officials to determine the severity of the leakage at the city's nuclear power plant. We propose cpmViz, a web-based tool that allows for interactive data exploration of the sensor readings in both of the spatial and temporal dimensions. The tool consists out of three views that are connected via linking and scrolling. We visualize static sensor uncertainty by introducing Voronoi cells to illustrate how much space is covered by an individual measurement unit. For mobile sensors, we showcase their activity periods and introduce the concept of sensor streaks as periods of uninterrupted recordings as a temporal uncertainty measure. As for spatial uncertainty, we color individual districts based on the amount of data that was recorded inside the user's selected time window. Using our system, we were able to easily spot major events like the city's initial earthquake in the sensor readings. Certain southern districts are clearly visible as areas of concern that we consider in need of more static sensors. Furthermore, we were also able to identify static as well as moving contaminations.

The task of the VAST 2011 Grand Challenge was to investigate potential terrorist activities and their relation to the spread of an epidemic. Three different data sets were provided as part of three Mini Challenges (MCs). MC 1 was about analyzing geo-tagged microblogging (Twitter) messages to characterize the spread of an epidemic. MC 2 required analyzing threats to a computer network using a situational awareness approach. In MC 3 possible criminal and terrorist activities were to be analyzed based on a collection of news articles. To solve the Grand Challenge, insight from each of the individual MCs had to be integrated appropriately.

This paper describes our approach and tools used to solve this year's VAST 2015 Mini-Challange 1 (MC1). It also explains how we came up with the idea for a new tool created for solving of the challenge and how this tool helps the user analyzing the data. Further, preprocessing steps will be discussed and how new features were created to be able to cluster guests in goups walking together. Finally findings of this visualization will be presented.

A comprehensive uncertainty, baseline, and noise analysis in computing 3D points using a recent L1-based triangulation algorithm is presented. This method is shown to be not only faster and more accurate than its main competitor, linear triangulation, but also more stable under noise and baseline changes. A Monte Carlo analysis of covariance and a confidence ellipsoid analysis were performed over a large range of baselines and noise levels for different camera configurations, to compare performance between angular error-based and linear triangulation. Furthermore, the effect of baseline and noise was analyzed for true multi-view triangulation versus pair wise stereo fusion. Results on real and synthetic data show that L1 angular error-based triangulation has a positive effect on confidence ellipsoids, lowers covariance values and results in more-accurate pair wise and multi-view triangulation, for varying numbers of cameras and configurations.

The VAST Challenge 2015 movement dataset is mirroring current challenges in the analysis of large spatiotemporal datasets. We present a tool featuring different exploratory approaches analyze and visualize spatiotemporal data to build and confirm hypotheses. Our tool helps the user to find patterns, anomalies and groups in a data set that can not be processed manually. We present custom visualizations to solve the tasks stated by the VAST 2015 Mini-Challenge (MC1).
Compact visual summaries of spatio-temporal movement data often strive to express accurate positions of movers. We present SpatialRugs, a technique to enhance the spatial awareness of movements in dense pixel visualiz...
