Recent studies have shown the promise of direct data processing on hierarchically-compressed text documents. By removing the need for decompressing data, the direct data processing technique brings large savings in both time and space. However, its benefits have been limited to data traversal operations; for random accesses, direct data processing is several times slower than the state-of-the-art baselines. This paper presents a set of techniques that successfully eliminate the limitation, and for the first time, establishes the feasibility of effectively handling both data traversal operations and random data accesses on hierarchically-compressed data. The work yields a new library, which achieves 3.1× speedup over the state-of-the-art on random data accesses to compressed data, while preserving the capability of supporting traversal operations efficiently and providing large (3.9×) space savings.

Orthodontic craniometric landmarks provide critical information in oral and maxillofacial imaging diagnosis and treatment planning. The Dent-landmark, defined as the odontoid process of the epistropheus, is one of the key landmarks to construct the midsagittal reference plane. In this paper, we propose a learning-based approach to automatically detect the Dent-landmark in the 3D cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) dental data. Specifically, a detector is learned using the random forest with sampled context features. Furthermore, we use spacial prior to build a constrained search space other than use the full three dimensional space. The proposed method has been evaluated on a dataset containing 73 CBCT dental volumes and yields promising results.

The Ensemble Portal harvests resources from multiple heterogeneous federated collections. Managing these dynamically increasing collections requires an automatic mechanism to categorize records in to corresponding topics. We propose an approach to use existing ACM DL metadata to build classifiers for harvested resources in the Ensemble project. We also present our experience with utilizing the Amazon Mechanical Turk platform to build ground truth training data sets from Ensemble collections. © 2012 ACM.

The biomedical applications of nanoparticles are growing in recent years. The uses range from diagnostic to therapeutic purposes, and researchers are constantly introducing new ways. Biosensors, miniaturization techniques, surface enhancement in implantable biomaterials, and better nanofibers in medical textiles are some of the contributions of biomedical nanotechnology. Therapeutic (medical) imaging successfully maps the anatomy of the human body. Image enhancement, analysis, categorization, and image based representation are all possible areas of computer processing and analysis of medical images. Therapeutic image understanding uses computer vision, applied mathematics, signal analysis, and artificial intelligence to recognise objects in medical images. Image processing is the use of computer algorithms to manipulate digital images. Hand-held transducers emit and receive pulsed acoustic waves for medical ultrasound imaging. In this study, a computer-aided diagnosis method is developed to help cytotechnicians locate and classify aberrant cells in cervical cytology images. With the outcomes of morphological and statistical edge based segmentation are compared to traditional segmentation techniques. The proposed segmentation methodology outperforms the other methods. This proposed technique's segmentation accuracy is 98%. © 2022 IEEE.

EC²Detect: Real-Time Online Video Object Detection in Edge-Cloud Collaborative IoT

Video object detection is a fundamental technology of intelligent video analytics for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, even with extraordinary detection accuracy, predominating solutions based on deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) cannot achieve real-time online object detection on video streams with a low end-to-end (E2E) response latency and therefore cannot be applied to proliferating latency-sensitive IoT applications like autonomous driving requiring large-scale intelligent video analytics. To address this issue, we present EC2Detect, an edge-cloud collaborative real-time online video object detection method. Specifically, we propose a tracking-assisted object detection architecture based on edge-cloud collaboration with keyframe selection, where the accurate but heavy object detection is conducted by the Cloud on sparse keyframes adaptively selected according to their semantic variation, and the lightweight object tracking is used to localize and identify objects in other frames at edge devices. Extensive experiments of our real-world prototype demonstrate that, EC2Detect significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of processing speed (up to $4.77\times $ faster), E2E latency (up to $8.12 \times $ lower), and edge-cloud bandwidth occupation ( $17 \times $ lower) with an acceptable mAP, which can effectively support large-scale intelligent video analytics in practice. The traditional Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) minimizes the total distance of the routes under the capacity constraints of the vehicles. But more often, the objective involves multiple criteria including not only the total distance of the tour but also other factors such as travel costs, travel time, and fuel consumption. Moreover, in reality, there are numerous implicit preferences ingrained in the minds of the route planners and the drivers. Drivers, for instance, have familiarity with certain neighborhoods and knowledge of the state of roads, and often consider the best places for rest and lunch breaks. This knowledge is difficult to formulate and balance when operational routing decisions have to be made. This motivates us to learn the implicit preferences from past solutions and to incorporate these learned preferences in the optimization process. These preferences are in the form of arc probabilities, i.e., the more preferred a route is, the higher is the joint probability. The novelty of this work is the use of a neural network model to estimate the arc probabilities, which allows for additional features and automatic parameter estimation. This first requires identifying suitable features, neural architectures and loss functions, taking into account that there is typically few data available. We investigate the difference with a prior weighted Markov counting approach, and study the applicability of neural networks in this setting. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.

Internet of Things(IoT) devices is the prime factor in automating the real world in the past few years. These networks provide efficient utilization of resources, quality data, and benefits with reduced human input as well as have secured processing which results in a high potential for automating the healthcare and defence systems. Noticing the large number of attacks on these networks in previous years, there is a vast study to detect the intrusion by attackers to ease the use of these devices without the fear of losing data. This survey is a deep study of works on detecting the intrusion in IoT networks and devices revolving around the use of Machine Learning and Deep Learning based algorithms on real-world datasets like “Bot-IoT” and “KDD”. The survey provides a building block in understanding the basics of Intrusion and also the benefits of Intrusion detection systems and thus promotes the researchers to focus more on prevention of such attacks. Furthermore, it compiles the studies from the year 2016 and compares the models of Machine Learning and Deep Learning segregated based on data sets used in training; also, summarizes the performance of such mechanisms.

We present a full forward-modeled wCDM analysis of the KiDS-1000 weak lensing maps using graph-convolutional neural networks (GCNN). Utilizing the cosmogrid, a novel massive simulation suite spanning six different cosmological parameters, we generate almost one million tomographic mock surveys on the sphere. Due to the large dataset size and survey area, we perform a spherical analysis while limiting our map resolution to HEALPix nside=512. We marginalize over systematics such as photometric redshift errors, multiplicative calibration and additive shear bias. Furthermore, we use a map-level implementation of the nonlinear intrinsic alignment model along with a novel treatment of baryonic feedback to incorporate additional astrophysical nuisance parameters. We also perform a spherical power spectrum analysis for comparison. The constraints of the cosmological parameters are generated using a likelihood-free inference method called Gaussian process approximate Bayesian computation (GPABC). Finally, we check that our pipeline is robust against choices of the simulation parameters. We find constraints on the degeneracy parameter of S8≡σ8ΩM/0.3=0.78−0.06+0.06 for our power spectrum analysis and S8=0.79−0.05+0.05 for our GCNN analysis, improving the former by 16%. This is consistent with earlier analyses of the 2-point function, albeit slightly higher. Baryonic corrections generally broaden the constraints on the degeneracy parameter by about 10%. These results offer great prospects for full machine learning based analyses of ongoing and future weak lensing surveys.

In recent years, research on neuromporphic computing platforms has focused on variable-structure, spiking network models. An important methodology for programming these networks is evoluationary optimization (EO), where thousands of networks are generated and then evaluated by determining fitness scores on specific tasks. Fitness scores guide the generation of new networks until a target fitness is achieved. One source of performance overhead during EO is the simulation of the task on each network to determing its fitness. To mitigate this source of overhead, we formulate the Static Fitness Prediction Task (SFPT), for predicting a network's fitness without direct simulation. Our hypothesis is that we can use SFPT to predict a network's fitness sufficiently accurately to reject a significant portion of networks during EO without having to simulate them, thereby making the EO more efficient. We propose a data-driven approach to the SFPT on the neuromorphic model DANNA [1]. Our approach transforms networks into directed graphs and extracts structural features to train an ancillary model for predicting the fitness of new networks. We analyze the extracted features and evaluate several predictive models to predict the fitness of networks for five tasks. Our results demonstrate a predictive capacity in these features and models. Our primary contribution is to demonstrate the utility of graph-level features extracted from variable-structure networks to predict network fitness and circumvent expensive simulations.
