The measurements of cardiac systolic duration (SD) and diastolic duration (DD) have been well accepted as helpful tools for evaluating the cardiac functionality. In clinical practice, SD and DD are generally measured using echocardiography or heart sound signals. Recent studies have seen the attempts of approximating SD and DD by electrocardiogram (ECG) derived QT and TQ intervals, as well as radial artery pressure (RAP) derived foot-to-notch and notch-to-foot intervals. However, to the best of knowledge, there lacks deep elucidations on their performance when used as surrogate SD and DD data. We investigated the RAP-derived SD, DD, and ratio of SD to DD (S/D), to heart rate (HR) and age in healthy adults. Sixty healthy subjects were enrolled and their ECG and RAP signals were simultaneously recorded. The SD and DD were extracted automatically from RAP with the aid of the acceleration RAP. The HR was calculated using the RR interval extracted from ECG. Their mean values of 10 cardiac cycles were used in the analysis. The ultimate goal of the EEG-fMRI analysis in refractory focal epilepsy is the precise localization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) to facilitate successful surgery. Many studies have shown that simultaneous GLM-based EEG-correlated fMRI analysis can identify fMRI voxels which covary with the timing of interictal spikes assessed on EEG. However, this type of analysis often does not reveal a single focus but an extensive epileptic network. In this paper we investigate whether parallel independent component analysis (ICA), a data-driven, symmetric integration approach can disentangle this network. We assume that ICA of EEG and ICA of fMRI will reveal different temporal and spatial aspects of this network, respectively. We hypothesize that by matching these different epilepsy-related EEG and fMRI components, we can get a deeper insight in the neural processes this extensive network represents. We tested parallel ICA on 12 refractory epilepsy patients who underwent full presurgical evaluation and showed concordant data (excluding EEG-fMRI) pointing to a single epileptic focus. Our results show that parallel ICA has an added value, as it can help the interpretation of the GLM results and pinpoint the EZ. Furthermore, it might help to understand how the various aspects of epileptic activity are reflected in EEG and fMRI.

Hypertension is a significant modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular and kidney disease, and blood pressure (BP) control is a very important step for cardiovascular risk management. Recently, home telemonitoring BP has been suggested as an effective tool for BP control and been commonly used in Western countries. Application of technology for healthcare management becomes a trend. Health data is usually longitudinal and voluminous, an effective data management would improve the quality of healthcare service. In order to deal with the volume, variety and velocity of medical data, cloud technology has opened a new horizon, especially data for medical research. Boosting the current home telemonitoring BP system with an automatic data capturing cloud technology along with healthcare provider alert function would be a pioneer. In this study, a cloud-connected personal-based BP meter will be transformed to a research-based BP data capturing cloud platform and will observe daily use of BP measurement and upload data to the cloud through a USB hub and internet-connected personal computer. All personal identity can be decoded and a study identity number will be assigned to each user for data privacy protection. The cloud platform enables easy access for different parties from anywhere, high speed performance, strong infrastructure support and vigorous data analysis power.

One of the major drawbacks in mobile EEG Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) is the need for subject specific training data to train a classifier. By removing the need for supervised classification and calibration phase, new users could start immediate interaction with a BCI. We propose a solution to exploit the structural difference by means of canonical polyadic decomposition (CPD) for three-class auditory oddball data without the need for subject-specific information. We achieve this by adding average event-related-potential (ERP) templates to the CPD model. This constitutes a novel similarity measure between single-trial pairs and known-templates, which results in a fast and interpretable classifier. These results have similar accuracy to those of the supervised and cross-validated stepwise LDA approach but without the need for having subject-dependent data. Therefore the described CPD method has a significant practical advantage over the traditional and widely used approach.

Most journalists can only dream of such processes and tools, making their (professional) lives so much easier and, above all, more efficient. AXES (Access to Audiovisual Archives) offers journalists-among other user groups-a platform that can do this. It includes a set of tools to interact with audiovisual libraries in new engaging ways, integrating advanced video and audio analysis technologies. Among different microphone array processing techniques, data-dependent beamforming has been proven to be effective in suppressing ambient noise. When applied for dereverberation, however, the adaptation process results in a biased estimate of the beamformer coefficients leading to strong distortions at the beamformer output. In this paper, we investigate the origin of this bias for the generalized sidelobe canceller. It is shown that an unbiased estimate of the beam-former coefficients and thus dereverberation can be achieved if the source signal is a white random signal. Based on these findings, a pre-whitening approach for speech signals is proposed and combined with a generalized sidelobe canceller for speech dereverberation. The concept is demonstrated for the case of stationary speech-shaped noise as a source signal.

Axle bearing damage with possible catastrophic failures can cause severe disruptions or even dangerous derailments, potentially causing loss of human life and leading to significant costs for railway infrastructure managers and rolling stock operators. Consequently the axle bearing damage process has safety and economic implications on the exploitation of railways systems. Therefore it has been the object of intense attention by railway authorities as proved by the selection of this topic by the European Commission in calls for research proposals. The MAXBE Project ( http://***/ ), a EU-funded project, appears in this context and its main goal is to develop and to demonstrate innovative and efficient technologies which can be used for the onboard and wayside condition monitoring of axle bearings. The MAXBE (interoperable monitoring, diagnosis and maintenance strategies for axle bearings) project focuses on detecting axle bearing failure modes at an early stage by combining new and existing monitoring techniques and on characterizing the axle bearing degradation process. The consortium for the MAXBE project comprises 18 partners from 8 member states, representing operators, railway administrations, axle bearing manufactures, key players in the railway community and experts in the field of monitoring, maintenance and rolling stock. The University of Porto is coordinating this research project that kicked-off in November 2012 and it is completed on October 2015. Both on-board and wayside systems are explored in the project since there is a need for defining the requirement for the onboard equipment and the range of working temperatures of the axle bearing for the wayside systems. The developed monitoring systems consider strain gauges, high frequency accelerometers, temperature sensors and acoustic emission. Inter-cell interference is a major challenge in multi-user multi-carrier cellular networks, especially for cells with over-lapping coverage. Several subcarrier and power allocation algorithms have been developed to deal with this problem. However, they focus on maximizing data rates using only physical layer information, disregarding upper layer information like the queue backlogs. Assigning subcarriers to the users based only on physical layer information like the channel conditions maximizes data rates, but may lead to network instability. To tackle this problem, we propose a cross-layer subcarrier and power allocation algorithm that uses physical layer information to reduce inter-cell interference and upper layer information to stabilize the network. Furthermore, our approach achieves a larger rate region than the baseline approach by protecting users in neighboring cells.

WATERNOMICS is an EU funded project that aims to raise awareness about efficient water management using ICT to provide users with insightful and actionable information. A crucial problem faced in our pilot settings was to enable personalized tracking of water consumption in a non-enforcing and invasive way. This paper presents two scenarios of such a system using storyboards that describe them in a university building setup, trying to encourage students to become more water aware. The paper continues to present the findings from the user tests conducted in the experiments in two pilot sites and concluded by presenting the changes in the design of the final application for the public space environment.
