Recently, Federated Graph Learning (FGL) has attracted significant attention as a distributed framework based on graph neural networks, primarily due to its capability to break data silos. Existing FGL studies employ community split on the homophilous global graph by default to simulate federated semisupervised node classification settings. Such a strategy assumes the consistency of topology between the multi-client subgraphs and the global graph, where connected nodes are highly likely to possess similar feature distributions and the same label. However, in real-world implementations, the varying perspectives of local data engineering result in various subgraph topologies, posing unique heterogeneity challenges in FGL. Unlike the well-known label Non-independent identical distribution (Non-iid) problems in federated learning, FGL heterogeneity essentially reveals the topological divergence among multiple clients, namely homophily or heterophily. To simulate and handle this unique challenge, we introduce the concept of structure Non-iid split and then present a new paradigm called Adaptive Federated Graph Learning (AdaFGL), a decoupled two-step personalized approach. To begin with, AdaFGL employs standard multi-client federated collaborative training to acquire the federated knowledge extractor by aggregating uploaded models in the final round at the server. Then, each client conducts personalized training based on the local subgraph and the federated knowledge extractor. Extensive experiments on the 12 graph benchmark datasets validate the superior performance of AdaFGL over state-of-the-art baselines. Specifically, in terms of test accuracy, our proposed AdaFGL outperforms baselines by significant margins of 3.24 % and 5.57 % on community split and structure Non-iid split, respectively. © 2024 IEEE.

The computer vision concept that involves the detection and characterization of objects in images is known as object detection. This research mainly performs this function using four popular models faster R-CNN, RetinaNet, RPN_R_50_FPN, and RPN_R_50_C4 across multiple datasets namely udacity self-driving car dataset, tomatOD dataset, and chess piece detection dataset. Faster R-CNN is famous for its outstanding accuracy although RetinaNet employs a unique focal loss function to balance between speed and accuracy. The purpose of the models RPN_R_50_FPN and RPN_R_50_C4 is to generate region proposals with high quality using different stages in the ResNet-50 backbone. For normalization techniques, the datasets are preprocessed in this research. Instead of training the models from scratch, transfer learning is used whereby starting with weights that were pre-trained on the COCO dataset and after that fine-tuning the required datasets. Accuracy was quantified by evaluating two efficiency measures which are minimum loss and total training duration. Across the different datasets, various performances were demonstrated by different models. © 2024 IEEE.

Generating wide-area digital surface models (DSMs) requires registering a large number of individual, and partially overlapped DSMs. This presents a challenging problem for a typical registration algorithm, since when a large number of observations from these multiple DSMs are considered, it may easily cause memory overflow. Sequential registration algorithms, although can significantly reduce the computation, are especially vulnerable for small overlapped pairs, leading to a large error accumulation. In this work, we propose a novel solution that builds the DSM registration task as a motion averaging problem: pair-wise DSMs are registered to build a scene graph, with edges representing relative poses between DSMs. Specifically, based on the grid structure of the large DSM, the pair-wise registration is performed using a novel nearest neighbor search method. We show that the scene graph can be optimized via an extremely fast motion average algorithm with O(N) complexity (N refers to the number of images). Evaluation of high-resolution satellite-derived DSM demonstrates significant improvement in computation and accuracy. © 2024 Ningli Xu.

Digital Twins are one of the emerging technologies which facilitate the creation of a digital replica of physical assets and infrastructure. The majority of initial use-cases of digital twins for smart cities and smart universities has focused on creation of the 3D representation of the infrastructure. However, with the maturity of technology, digital twins are nowadays used to build use-cases for smart applications which involve multiple sources of information including geographical information, IoT sensors and use-case specific knowledge bases. Smart DCU Digital Twin is one of the initiative towards achieving a smart university status for Dublin City University (DCU). Across the globe and in Ireland many universities including DCU are working on providing additional support to students with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). The primary focus of these initiatives is on improving social interactions, and reducing academic and sensory barriers for the students. In this paper, we present our work on using digital twin technology to assist DCU in achieving its objective of becoming a fully inclusive and an Autism-Friendly university, with a particular focus on the reduction of sensory barriers for its students. © 2024 IEEE.

Meta-heuristic stochastic optimization algorithms are predominantly used to solve complex real-world problems. Numerous new nature-inspired meta-heuristics are being proposed to address various open challenges. Since many heuristics are stochastic, they could yield different solutions to the same problem for different runs. Hence, there is a need for stringent in-depth statistical analysis of the performances of stochastic optimization algorithms. The proposed severity framework enables researchers and practitioners to define application-specific and meaningful performance evaluation metric that evaluates the magnitude of the performance improvement achieved, which is not only of statistical significance but also of practical relevance. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Chatbots have become a trending topic with emerging platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, for conversation assistance. Current chatbots mainly focus on the general public assuming a natural flow of conversation. However, there is a need for a chatbot that supports people with various communication disabilities. This research fills this gap by offering a novel technique for a chatbot that assists people with Aphasia, a condition characterised by difficulties with language. We propose a multi-modal chatbot that is customised and designed to assist users with communication disabilities in navigating a website. Unlike typical chatbots, which rely on one form of communication, our architecture combines multiple modalities to improve comprehension and promote effective communication for people with Aphasia. We focus on gathering multimodal inputs by recognising and combining user intents from diverse sources. The use of Txtai, an all-in-one embeddings database for semantic search improves our chatbot's capacity to process various inputs efficiently. We leverage specialised models like Whisper for audio transcription and MediaPipe Gesture Recognizer for gesture detection to enhance user interactions. Additionally, Rasa Core integration improves conversational experiences for users. We propose that this new approach will make communication more accessible and inclusive for individuals with Aphasia. © 2024 IEEE.

Recent years have seen extensive use of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) using electroencephalography (EEG). A critical element in BCI research is electrode selection, which influences performance, experiment duration, resource utilization, and consequently, cost. Electrode choice is partly dictated by the study location, as environmental electrical noise can impact EEG signal quality. This study evaluates the performance of a P300 speller and EEG signal quality using 4-, 6-, 8-, and 16-electrode configurations in two different office environments. Ten healthy adults participated in a single session, using a P300 speller to spell three words with each electrode set. Participants were split between two locations, with five individuals in each. Significant performance disparities were observed between the locations. Notably, within each location, the performance differences among 4-, 6-, and 8-electrode sets were minimal;only the 16-electrode set outperformed the others in both settings. The location associated with poorer performances also exhibited lower P300 amplitudes and higher levels of mains electricity noise. © 2024 IEEE.

Imidazoline and its derivatives have been proposed as effective organic corrosion inhibitors for AISI 1018 mild steel, though challenges remain regarding their production processes and efficiency in CO2/H2S-saturated brine solutions. In this study, fatty imidazoline acetate (FIA) was synthesized from waste cooking oil and evaluated for its ability to protect AISI 1018 steel in corrosive environments. The chemical composition of the synthesized FIA was confirmed through gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC–MS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Corrosion inhibition performance was assessed using potentiodynamic polarization at room temperature, with the most promising results further examined via weight loss measurements and contact angle analyses. A commercial inhibitor commonly used in pipelines with CO2/H2S-saturated brine was also evaluated for comparison. Surface characterization of the steel samples, both with and without inhibitors, was conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The FIA demonstrated an inhibition efficiency (IE%) of 99.89% at a concentration of 40 mg/L, closely matching the performance of the commercial inhibitor (IE% = 99.96%). This study underscores the potential of FIA as a sustainable and effective corrosion inhibitor in CO2/H2S-saturated environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Human life is challenged by this main work’s ultimate goal of reducing accidents and ensuring life safety due to the enormous growth of vehicles and those based on safety. Here, cases of suspected drunk driving, reckless driving, etc., are present. In this scenario, vehicles are traveling at full speed and irresponsibly using technology on all roads. An early warning system is used to stop auto accidents. In order to accommodate the city's steadily increasing automobile population, intelligent traffic systems must be designed in a resourceful and sustainable manner using all available technology in both light and dark. The advanced ML's work on unexpected traffic flow and all road conditions resulted in significant real-time changes in the flow of traffic for every significant issue that arose. Here, the Blue Whale technology makes use of clever intelligence to quickly identify, detect, and modify warning systems. The primary objective of the study was to train CNN/BWT on the collected data sets in order to operationalize the unsupervised approach for the prediction of critical situations. Additionally, it makes an effort to clarify the situation so that guests can feel more at ease and help them decide on transfers in time-sensitive situations. IOT is a practical way to locate the nearest object using machine learning methods that are accurate and apply received data sets, resulting in significant findings that support object recognition. The paperwork fully focuses on improving driving knowledge and offering new approaches for quick object recognition. The Fast Warning System Initiative, which aims to increase daytime safety and security, is providing a prior warning system. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
