Embedding-based retrieval methods construct vector indices to search for document representations that are most similar to the query representations. They are widely used in document retrieval due to low latency and decent recall performance. Recent research indicates that deep retrieval solutions offer better model quality, but are hindered by unacceptable serving latency and the inability to support document updates. In this paper, we aim to enhance the vector index with end-to-end deep generative models, leveraging the differentiable advantages of deep retrieval models while maintaining desirable serving efficiency. We propose Model-enhanced Vector Index (MEVI), a differentiable model-enhanced index empowered by a twin-tower representation model. MEVI leverages a Residual Quantization (RQ) codebook to bridge the sequence-to-sequence deep retrieval and embedding-based models. To substantially reduce the inference time, instead of decoding the unique document ids in long sequential steps, we first generate some semantic virtual cluster ids of candidate documents in a small number of steps, and then leverage the well-adapted embedding vectors to further perform a fine-grained search for the relevant documents in the candidate virtual clusters. We empirically show that our model achieves better performance on the commonly used academic benchmarks MSMARCO Passage and Natural Questions, with comparable serving latency to dense retrieval solutions.

In this paper, the performance optimization of federated learning (FL), when deployed over a realistic wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with digital modulation and over-the-air computation (AirComp) is studied. In particular, a MIMO system is considered in which edge devices transmit their local FL models (trained using their locally collected data) to a parameter server (PS) using beamforming to maximize the number of devices scheduled for transmission. The PS, acting as a central controller, generates a global FL model using the received local FL models and broadcasts it back to all devices. Due to the limited bandwidth in a wireless network, AirComp is adopted to enable efficient wireless data aggregation. However, fading of wireless channels can produce aggregate distortions in an AirComp-based FL scheme. To tackle this challenge, we propose a modified federated averaging (FedAvg) algorithm that combines digital modulation with AirComp to mitigate wireless fading while ensuring the communication efficiency. This is achieved by a joint transmit and receive beamforming design, which is formulated as an optimization problem to dynamically adjust the beamforming matrices based on current FL model parameters so as to minimize the transmitting error and ensure the FL performance. To achieve this goal, we first analytically characterize how the beamforming matrices affect the performance of the FedAvg in different iterations. Based on this relationship, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to estimate the local FL models of all devices and adjust the beamforming matrices at the PS for future model transmission. The comprehensive effects of exogenous additives on microbial-driven antibiotic resistance profiles and C/N/S conversion in animal manure composting remains uncertain. This study examined whether tea branch biochar could regulate the microflora involved in antibiotic resistance and C/N/S conversion during pig and chicken manure composting. Compared with the control treatment, biochar addition prolonged the high-temperature period (>55 °C) for 1–2 days and raised the maximum temperature in chicken manure composting. Moreover, biochar addition reduced the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in both pig and chicken manure composting by up to 30 %, targeting various types of ARGs such as peptide, phenicol, and diaminopyrimidines. Additionally, the compost microbiota exhibited the overlaps of C/N/S conversion functions. Luteimonas (Xanthomonadaceae) was identified as a dominant bacterium responsible for C/N/S conversion in both pig and chicken manure composting, while also acting as a potential ARG carrier. Thus, Luteimonas is crucial in shaping antibiotic resistance profiles and C/N/S cycling in animal manure composting, indicating its role as a keystone genus. These findings suggest that tea branch biochar can mitigate the spread of ARGs from animal manure, as well as enhance nutrient cycling and compost quality. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Efficient Low-Resolution Face Recognition via Bridge Distillation

Face recognition in the wild is now advancing towards light-weight models, fast inference speed and resolution-adapted capability. In this paper, we propose a bridge distillation approach to turn a complex face model pretrained on private high-resolution faces into a light-weight one for low-resolution face recognition. In our approach, such a cross-dataset resolution-adapted knowledge transfer problem is solved via two-step distillation. In the first step, we conduct cross-dataset distillation to transfer the prior knowledge from private high-resolution faces to public high-resolution faces and generate compact and discriminative features. In the second step, the resolution-adapted distillation is conducted to further transfer the prior knowledge to synthetic low-resolution faces via multi-task learning. By learning low-resolution face representations and mimicking the adapted high-resolution knowledge, a light-weight student model can be constructed with high efficiency and promising accuracy in recognizing low-resolution faces. Experimental results show that the student model performs impressively in recognizing low-resolution faces with only 0.21M parameters and 0.057MB memory. Meanwhile, its speed reaches up to 14,705, 934 and 763 faces per second on GPU, CPU and mobile phone, respectively. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In recent years, graph data in the non-Euclidean space has been widely used, and the methods and techniques for learning graph data in many deep learning fields have been continuously developed, such as the Graph neural network (GNN). The structural characteristics of graph data, the aggregation mode and representation mode of node information, and the node neighbor information are the core issues of GNN. However, most of the existing graph convolutional neural networks have an excessive smoothing problem, which limits the learning ability of the model. Aiming at the over-smoothing problem of the current algorithm, this paper enhances the learning of graph data by improving the expression ability of local information and global features. This paper constructs a cascade structure between graph convolutional layers. This kind of network structure realizes the dense connection of convolutional layers, makes the local feature information is effectively used, and further enhances the graph representation ability. Introduce self-attention and TopK into the Readout module, selectively aggregate and express feature information, and use graph-level information more efficiently. Graph classification is a downstream task to verify the performance of the proposed model. Experimental results prove that this densely structured graph convolutional network can effectively aggregate local node information and global graph-level information. © 2021 IEEE.

With the rapid progress of generative models, the current challenge in face forgery detection is how to effectively detect realistic manipulated faces from different unseen domains. Though previous studies show that pre-trained Vision Transformer (ViT) based models can achieve some promising results after fully fine-tuning on the Deepfake dataset, their generalization performances are still unsatisfactory. One possible reason is that fully fine-tuned ViT-based models may disrupt the pre-trained features [1], [2] and overfit to some data-specific patterns [3]. To alleviate this issue, we present a Forgery-aware Adaptive Vision Transformer (FA-ViT) under the adaptive learning paradigm, where the parameters in the pre-trained ViT are kept fixed while the designed adaptive modules are optimized to capture forgery features. Specifically, a global adaptive module is designed to model long-range interactions among input tokens, which takes advantage of self-attention mechanism to mine global forgery clues. To further explore essential local forgery clues, a local adaptive module is proposed to expose local inconsistencies by enhancing the local contextual association. In addition, we introduce a fine-grained adaptive learning module that emphasizes the common compact representation of genuine faces through relationship learning in fine-grained pairs, driving these proposed adaptive modules to be aware of fine-grained forgery-aware information. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our FA-ViT achieves state-of-the-arts results in the cross-dataset evaluation, and enhances the robustness against unseen perturbations. Particularly, FA-ViT achieves 93.83% and 78.32% AUC scores on Celeb-DF and DFDC datasets in the cross-dataset evaluation. In the evolving landscape of sequential recommendation systems, the application of Large Language Models (LLMs) is increasingly prominent. However, current attempts typically utilize general-purpose LLMs, which present a mismatch in capability and a large semantic gap relative to the specialized needs of recommendation tasks. To tackle these issues, we introduce RecCoder, an innovative model that reformulates sequential recommendation as a code completion task. This approach leverages the superior reasoning capability of code LLMs as a backbone, aligning well with the requirements of recommendation systems. To bridge the semantic gap, RecCoder creates extra tokens for each item and employs item content to initialize token embeddings. Furthermore, we have developed a suite of Semantic Adaptation Fine-tuning tasks, tailored to enhance the model's acquisition of both content and collaborative semantic information, thus aligning the model's intrinsic capabilities with the unique demands of recommendation tasks. Through extensive testing on three public datasets, RecCoder has shown remarkable improvements over existing models in terms of recommendation accuracy and efficiency. This success highlights the substantial yet previously underexplored potential of code LLMs in improving recommendation accuracy and efficiency, suggesting a promising new direction for future research in this area. Two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes), especially their few-layered nanosheets, have triggered burgeoning research attentions owing to their superiorities including extraordinary conductivity, accessible active surface, and adjustable processability. Molten salts etching route further achieves their controllable surface chemistry. However, the method encounters challenges in achieving few-layer structures due to more complex delamination behaviors. Herein, we present an efficient strategy to fabricate Cl- or Br-terminated MXene nanoflakes with few-layers, achieved by electrochemical intercalation of Li ions and concomitant solvent molecules in the electrolyte solution, with gaseous scissors (propylene molecules) to break up interlayer forces. By controlling cut-off voltages, the optimal protocol results in nanosheets with an ultrahigh yield (~93%) and preserved surface chemistry. The resultant MXenes dispersions were employed as lubricants to enhance tribovoltaic nanogenerators, where Ti3C2Br2 displayed superior electrical output. These findings facilitate the understanding of MXenes’ intrinsic physical properties and enable the nanoengineering of advanced electronic devices. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. A Novel Grey Multivariate Convolution Model Based on the Improved Marine Predators Algorithm for Predicting Fossil Co2 Emissions in China

The effective prediction of fossil CO2 emissions provides a foundation for environmental protection authorities to make relevant management and decisions. CO2 emissions are influenced by various factors and exhibit a nonlinear and complex trend. First, the weighted conformable fractional accumulation (WCFA) method is proposed. The weight of old and new information can be regulated by adjusting the parameters. A nonlinear discrete grey Bernoulli multivariate convolution model is introduced to model the sequences processed by WCFA. Then, five parameters in the model need to be optimized. An improved marine predators algorithm is proposed through the tent map and an improved control parameter. The feasibility and predictive effectiveness of the model is demonstrated by comparing it with four improved grey multivariate convolution models. Finally, the total fossil CO2 emissions in China from 2022 to 2026 are predicted and analyzed. The results indicate a gradual decrease in fossil CO2 emissions over the next five years. Some reasonable suggestions are made based on the prediction results and sources of fossil CO2 emissions. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
