Computational Pathology (CPATH) offers the possibility for highly accurate and low-cost automated pathological diagnosis. However, the high time cost of model inference is one of the main issues limiting the application of CPATH methods. Due to the large size of Whole-Slide Image (WSI), commonly used CPATH methods divided a WSI into a large number of image patches at relatively high magnification, then predicted each image patch individually, which is time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a novel Uncertainty-based Model Acceleration (UMA) method for reducing the time cost of model inference, thereby relieving the deployment burden of CPATH applications. Enlightened by the slide-viewing process of pathologists, only a few high-uncertain regions are regarded as “suspicious” regions that need to be predicted at high magnification, and most of the regions in WSI are predicted at low magnification, thereby reducing the times of image patch extraction and prediction. Meanwhile, uncertainty estimation ensures prediction accuracy at low magnification. We take two fundamental CPATH classification tasks (i.e., cancer region detection and subtyping) as examples. Extensive experiments on two large-scale renal cell carcinoma classification datasets demonstrate that our UMA can significantly reduce the time cost of model inference while maintaining competitive classification performance.

Device activity detection in the emerging cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has been recognized as a crucial task in machine-type communications, in which multiple access points (APs) jointly identify the active devices from a large number of potential devices based on the received signals. Most of the existing works addressing this problem rely on the impractical assumption that different active devices transmit signals synchronously. However, in practice, synchronization cannot be guaranteed due to the low-cost oscillators, which brings additional discontinuous and nonconvex constraints to the detection problem. To address this challenge, this paper reveals an equivalent reformulation to the asynchronous activity detection problem, which facilitates the development of a centralized algorithm and a distributed algorithm that satisfy the highly nonconvex constraints in a gentle fashion as the iteration number increases, so that the sequence generated by the proposed algorithms can get around bad stationary points. To reduce the capacity requirements of the fronthauls, we further design a communication-efficient accelerated distributed algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed centralized and distributed algorithms outperform state-of-the-art approaches, and the proposed accelerated distributed algorithm achieves a close detection performance to that of the centralized algorithm but with a much smaller number of bits to be transmitted on the fronthaul links. Multimodal fake news detection has become a topical research of fake news detection. Existing models have made great efforts in capturing and fusing multimodal semantics of news for classification. However, they overlooked mitigating inconsistency between different modalities, which may result in learning biased statistical information. Therefore, we propose a mitigating multimodal inconsistency contrastive learning framework (MMICF), which mitigates inconsistency in multi-modal relations for fake news detection. Inspired by various forms of artificial fake news, we summarize two patterns of multimodal inconsistency: local and global inconsistency. To mitigate local inconsistency in multimodal relations, we use a causal-relation reasoning module by causally removing the direct effects of the textual and visual entities. Considering the influence of global inconsistency in multimodal semantics, our contrastive learning framework mitigates the semantic deviation of contrastive text-image objectives, which are constrained into a unified semantic space by a modal unified module. Thus, our MMICF can jointly mitigate local and global inconsistency for further maximally exploiting multimodal consistent semantics for fake news detection. The extensive experimental results show that the MMICF can improve the performance of multimodal fake news detection and provide a novel paradigm for mitigating multimodal inconsistency contrastive learning.

Low-light image enhancement (LLIE) aims to improve low-illumination images. However, existing methods face two challenges: (1) uncertainty in restoration from diverse brightness degradations;(2) loss of texture and color information caused by noise suppression and light enhancement. In this paper, we propose a novel enhancement approach, CodeEnhance, by leveraging quantized priors and image refinement to address these challenges. In particular, we reframe LLIE as learning an image-to-code mapping from low-light images to discrete codebook, which has been learned from high-quality images. To enhance this process, a Semantic Embedding Module (SEM) is introduced to integrate semantic information with low-level features, and a Codebook Shift (CS) mechanism, designed to adapt the pre-learned codebook to better suit the distinct characteristics of our low-light dataset. Additionally, we present an Interactive Feature Transformation (IFT) module to refine texture and color information during image reconstruction, allowing for interactive enhancement based on user preferences. Extensive experiments on both real-world and synthetic benchmarks demonstrate that the incorporation of prior knowledge and controllable information transfer significantly enhances LLIE performance in terms of quality and fidelity. The proposed CodeEnhance exhibits superior robustness to various degradations, including uneven illumination, noise, and color distortion. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Cross-silo federated learning (FL) enables multiple institutions (clients) to collaboratively build a global model without sharing private data. To prevent privacy leakage during aggregation, homomorphic encryption (HE) is widely used to encrypt model updates, yet incurs high computation and communication overheads. To reduce these overheads, packed HE (PHE) has been proposed to encrypt multiple plaintexts into a single ciphertext. However, the original design of PHE assumes all clients share a single private key, making the system vulnerable to security threats of ciphertexts being intercepted and decrypted by honest-but-curious clients. Also, it does not consider the heterogeneity among different clients, resulting in undermined training efficiency with slow convergence and stragglers. To address these challenges, we propose FedPHE, a secure and efficient FL framework with PHE by jointly exploiting contribution-aware secure aggregation and straggler-resistant client selection. Using CKKS with sparsification and blinding, FedPHE achieves efficient secure aggregation that allows clients to only provide obscured encrypted updates while the server can perform aggregation by accounting for contributions of local updates. To mitigate the straggler effect, we devise a perturbed sketch-based selection to cherry-pick representative clients with heterogeneous models and computing capabilities in a communication-efficient and privacy-preserving manner. We show, through rigorous security analysis and extensive experiments, that FedPHE can efficiently safeguard clients' privacy, achieve 2.45-6.56× training speedup, cut the communication overhead by 1.32-24.85×, and reduce straggler effects by 1.89-2.78×. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

The existing models have been achieved great success in capturing and fusing miltimodal semantics of news. However, they paid more attention to the global information, ignoring the interactions of global and local semantics and the inconsistency between different modalities. Therefore, we propose an explainable multi-view semantic fusion model (EMSFM), where we aggregate the important inconsistent semantics from local and global views to compensate the global information. Inspired by various forms of artificial fake news and real news, we summarize four views of multimodal correlation: consistency and inconsistency in the local and global views. Integrating these four views, our EMSFM can interpretatively establish global and local fusion between consistent and inconsistent semantics in multimodal relations for fake news detection. The extensive experimental results show that the EMSFM can improve the performance of multimodal fake news detection and provide a novel paradigm for explainable multi-view semantic fusion.

Slow transportation mode, consisting of walking and cycling, plays an important role in urban traffic system. Based on the fact that bicycles and pedestrians often share the common road facility, we conducted bicycle-pedestrian mixed flow experiments to investigate the interaction effect among individuals in a 10 m-long, 3 m-wide passageway, mimicking the zebra crossing area. The goal is to explore the influence of bicycles proportion ( p ) on traffic efficiency and investigate the spatial distribution of agents in the mixed flow. Our analyses showed that the increase of bicycle proportion results in longer passing time and less travel time because of large personal space requirements of cyclists. When the bicycle proportion is small or large, the majority pedestrians (bicycles) were divided into several parts by minor bicycles (pedestrians) along the motion direction. We also recorded the following- and lateral- distance between two nearest individuals to calculate the theoretical formula of the passing time for unidirectional bicycle-pedestrian mixed flow based on the existing formula. Comparing the passing time between numerical calculation and experimental data, the effect coefficients for bicycle and pedestrian were obtained. Focusing on the overtaking bicycles, the through gap, lateral and headway distance that decide the overtaking behavior were analyzed. These findings are the first step toward the development of bicycle-pedestrian mixed flow on zebra crossing, which is contribute to provide practical implications for the planning and design of bicycle and pedestrian shared infrastructures. © 2022, The Authors. Place recognition is the foundation for enabling autonomous systems to achieve independent decision-making and safe operations. It is also crucial in tasks such as loop closure detection and global localization within SLAM. Previous methods utilize mundane point cloud representations as input and deep learning-based LiDAR-based Place Recognition (LPR) approaches employing different point cloud image inputs with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or transformer architectures. However, the recently proposed Mamba deep learning model, combined with state space models (SSMs), holds great potential for long sequence modeling. Therefore, we developed OverlapMamba, a novel network for place recognition, which represents input range views (RVs) as sequences. In a novel way, we employ a stochastic reconstruction approach to build shift state space models, compressing the visual representation. Evaluated on three different public datasets, our method effectively detects loop closures, showing robustness even when traversing previously visited locations from different directions. Relying on raw range view inputs, it outperforms typical LiDAR and multi-view combination methods in time complexity and speed, indicating strong place recognition capabilities and realtime efficiency. To mine fascinating molecules from the rhizomes of Atractylodes chinensis, the known molecular formula of atrachinenin A was used as a bait to search LC-HRMS data in different subfractions. Sixteen new meroterpenoids, atrachinenins D–S (1–16) including three unprecedented carbon skeletons (1–5) and eleven new oxygen-bridged hybrids (6–16) were obtained by the targeted isolation. Their structures and absolute configurations were elucidated by the spectroscopic data and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. All of the isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activity of NO production and compounds 1, 4, and 8 showed moderate anti-inflammatory activity. Train Faster, Perform Better: Modular Adaptive Training in Over-Parameterized Models

Despite their prevalence in deep-learning communities, over-parameterized models convey high demands of computational costs for proper training. This work studies the fine-grained, modular-level learning dynamics of over-parameterized models to attain a more efficient and fruitful training strategy. Empirical evidence reveals that when scaling down into network modules, such as heads in self-attention models, we can observe varying learning patterns implicitly associated with each module's trainability. To describe such modular-level learning capabilities, we introduce a novel concept dubbed modular neural tangent kernel (mNTK), and we demonstrate that the quality of a module's learning is tightly associated with its mNTK's principal eigenvalue λmax. A large λmax indicates that the module learns features with better convergence, while those miniature ones may impact generalization negatively. Inspired by the discovery, we propose a novel training strategy termed Modular Adaptive Training (MAT) to update those modules with their λmax exceeding a dynamic threshold selectively, concentrating the model on learning common features and ignoring those superfluous ones. Unlike most existing training schemes with a complete BP cycle across all network modules, MAT can significantly save computations by its partially-updating strategy and can further improve performance.
