In the last years several drafts, recommendations and concepts for a graphical notation for Topic Maps have been published, but till today no graphical notation is generally approved and used in the Topic Maps community. In this paper we present GTMalpha as a conceptual new notation for a graphical representation of Topic Maps. Our objective is, to provide a practical usable notation, which allows a complete, consistent as well as easy to use graphical representation of any given topic map draft. GTMalpha provides a domain as well as a subject centric view and most important it considers the unique characteristics of the Topic Maps paradigm. This paper serves as a user oriented GTMalpha manual for ontology designers, domain experts as well as users.

Despite the significant research over the last ten years, commercial ubiquitous computing environments and pervasive applications remain thin on the ground. This paper looks at the explosion in application creativity on the internet in recent years - the so-called web 2.0' - in order to identify the obstacles to application creativity in ubiquitous computing. Although technological and standardisation advances are progressively diminishing the scale of the technical problems in the domain, how to manage such applications in such a way so as to encourage user-acceptance remains an open question. It is a question that is particularly difficult due to the serious privacy concerns and the need for negotiated management of services between users due to physically embedded nature of sensor-driven applications. We describe a technical platform which is designed to allow users of ubiquitous computing environments to manage their own personal data and share it in a controlled way and describe an experimental programme to measure the relationship between users' perception of how much control they can exercise over their personal data and their acceptance of ubiquitous computing applications. Nowadays many popular Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems suffer from the simultaneous attacks of various pollution, including file-targeted attack and index-targeted attack. However, to our knowledge, there is no model that takes both of them into consideration. In fact, the two attacks impact the effect of each other. It makes the models considering either kind of pollution only fail to accurately illustrate the actual pollution. In this paper, we develop a unified model to remedy the defect. Through the analysis from the perspective of user behavior, the two attacks are integrated into the unified model as two factors impacting users' choice of the files to download. The modeled file proliferation processes are consistent to those measured in real P2P systems. Moreover, the co-effect of the two attacks is also analyzed. The extremum point of co-effect is found, which corresponds to the most efficient attack of pollution. Further analysis of the model's accuracy requires the quantitative comparison between the modeled effects of pollution and the measured ones. Nonetheless, no such metric has ever been proposed, which also causes a lot of problems in evaluating the effect of pollution and anti-pollution techniques. To fix the deficiency, we propose several metrics to assess the effect of pollution, including abort ratio, average download time of unpolluted files, etc. These metrics estimate the effect of pollution from different aspects. They are applied to the analysis of pollution emulated by our unified model. The co-effect of pollution is captured by these metrics. Furthermore, the difference between our model and the previously developed ones is also reflected by them.

Blogs, Wikis, and Social Bookmark Tools have rapidly emerged on the Web. The reasons for their immediate success are that people are happy to share information, and that these tools provide an infrastructure for doing so without requiring any specific skills. At the moment, there exists no foundational research for these systems, and they provide only very simple structures for organising knowledge. Individual users create their own structures, but these can currently not be exploited for knowledge sharing. The objective of the seminar was to provide theoretical foundations for upcoming Web 2.0 applications and to investigate further applications that go beyond bookmark- and file-sharing. The main research question can be summarized as follows: How will current and emerging resource sharing systems support users to leverage more knowledge and power from the information they share on Web 2.0 applications? Research areas like Semantic Web, Machine Learning, Information Retrieval, Information Extraction, Social Network Analysis, Natural Language Processing, Library and Information sciences, and Hypermedia Systems have been working for a while on these questions. In the workshop, researchers from these areas came together to assess the state of the art and to set up a road map describing the next steps towards the next generation of social software. © 2008 Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings. In this paper we propose a holistic approach to modeling the management of dynamic spectrum access (DSA). We argue that the range to issues involved requires not just a management scheme, but also a meta-management scheme whereby management processes are monitored, analyzed and improved. In this way different proposals for management can be refined through interaction in a dialectic that reacts to the problems and conflicts of a given management scheme as well as the changes in the technological, social, economic and political environment. We examine Stafford Beer's Viable Systems Model as a possible basis for a framework that encompasses a variety of feedback loops involved in addressing operations, management and meta-management together. We also propose how this model could be mapped onto a concrete policy meta-management system and sketch out issues worthy of further investigation in developing a holistic DSA management framework.

The management of dynamic spectrum access requires the coordination of administrative functions across multiple organizations, from regulators to secondary market operators and commons cooperatives. Policy-based management approaches to dynamic spectrum access must therefore support a wide range of organizational types and handle the relationships between policies authored separately within those organizations. A policy language for administering dynamic access to spectrum resources has been proposed by the DARPA XG initiative. This defines an expressive and extensible language for specifying policies that determine the correct behavior of RIF transceivers as spectrum usage opportunities occur. However, this language does not yet address the mapping of policies onto the complex organizational settings that are likely to emerge in the dynamic spectrum access domain. This paper defines how the DARPA XG policy language can be integrated with a meta-policy management scheme that provides the powerful organizational modeling and policy authoring authority control needed to manage the evolution of policies in these complex organizational settings. The benefits of this integration are illustrated through a case study based on the potential use of dynamic spectrum access licenses granted in Ireland for the DySpan 2007 conference, and the organizational conflicts that even this simple scenario can yield. The practical issues of administering a multi-organizational policy management system are examined through an analysis of the interactions between existing components that are being assembled to demonstrate sophisticated policy management of a cognitive radio system.

The use of formal knowledge representation structures, or ontologies, has found immense applicability for the interoperability of software systems, e.g., alignment of software and business process models. Toward the management of such knowledge structures, an important foundational problem is that of ontology reuse - it is uncommon for new applications or for different components within one application to use an already available ontology in its entirety. Depending on component specific requirements, typical re-usages are restricted to refined versions of an existing ontology, with the refinement taking the form of a contraction of the knowledge contained therein. Furthermore, when the ontology is used to ascribe meaning to independently existing 'resources' (e.g., documents collections, source code, software manuals, process template repositories) by way of meta-data, there exists a direct mapping between different views/re-uses of an ontology and their respective semantic scopes within an annotated resource repository thereby leading to the concept of view/reuse dependent resource retrieval. We implement a framework that supports ontology reuse by way of a requirement driven sub-ontology extraction methodology. Additionally, based on this concept of a sub-ontology, we implement the idea of a user/component 'requirement profile' consisting of semantic descriptions of the user's interest within a 'resource repository' that has been annotated with semantic types from the ontology under consideration. A generic framework that implements these ideas and its application in the domains of medical information retrieval systems and business process management systems (BPMS) is presented.

Association rule mining is one of the most important and basic technique in data mining, which has been studied extensively and has a wide range of applications. However, as traditional data mining algorithms usually only focus on analyzing data organized in single table, applying these algorithms in multi-relational data environment will result in many problems. This paper summarizes these problems, proposes a framework for the mining of multi-relational association rule, and gives a definition of the mining task. After classifying the existing work into two categories, it describes the main techniques used in several typical algorithms, and it also makes comparison and analysis among them. Finally, it points out some issues unsolved and some future further research work in this area.

As context-aware systems become more widespread and mobile there is an increasing need for a common distributed event platform for gathering context information and delivering to context-aware applications. The likely heterogeneity across the body of context information can be addressed using runtime reasoning over ontology-based context models. However, existing knowledge-based reasoning is not typically optimised for real-time operation so its inclusion in any context delivery platform needs to be carefully evaluated from a performance perspective. In this paper we propose a benchmark for knowledge-based context delivery platforms and in particular examine suitable knowledge benchmarks for assessing the ability of platforms to deal with semantic interoperability. © 2006 IEEE.
