As a vulnerable part of the cerebral blood supply, pathology of small vessels can cause serious problems such as Cerebral Small Vessel Diseases (CSVD). It has also been shown that CSVD is related to neurodegeneration, such as Alzheimer's disease. With the advancement of 7 Tesla MRI systems, higher spatial image resolution can be achieved, enabling the depiction of very small vessels in the brain. Non-Deep Learning-based approaches for vessel segmentation, e.g., Frangi's vessel enhancement with subsequent thresholding, are capable of segmenting medium to large vessels but often fail to segment small vessels. The sensitivity of these methods to small vessels can be increased by extensive parameter tuning or by manual corrections, albeit making them time-consuming, laborious, and not feasible for larger datasets. This paper proposes a deep learning architecture to automatically segment small vessels in 7 Tesla 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) data. The algorithm was trained and evaluated on a small imperfect semi-automatically segmented dataset of only 11 subjects;using six for training, two for validation, and three for testing. The deep learning model based on U-Net Multi-Scale Supervision was trained using the training subset and was made equivariant to elastic deformations in a self-supervised manner using deformation-aware learning to improve the generalisation performance. The proposed technique was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively against the test set and achieved a Dice score of 80.44 ± 0.83. Furthermore, the result of the proposed method was compared against a selected manually segmented region (62.07 resultant Dice) and has shown a considerable improvement (18.98%) with deformation-aware learning. In the logistics industry, not only cartons but also polybags are used to pack goods for delivery. We study a single polybag loading problem, which is faced by many e-retailers and courier companies. In the problem, a set of rotatable boxes and a two-dimensional rectangular polybag are given. Because the polybag is flexible, the three-dimensional space inside the polybag can be variable when the boxes are loaded. The problem is to choose a subset of the boxes and pack them orthogonally into the polybag so as to maximize the space utilization. We introduce a mixed integer programming formulation and propose a tree search heuristic for the problem. Methods are evaluated by computational experiments on randomly generated data. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Groundbreaking advances in theoretical and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI). DL algorithms are groundedin non-linear and complex artificial neural systems that progressively extract higher-level features from *** is frequently compared with human-level performance in real-world tasks, such as clinical diagnostics. Itis also a turning point in solving otherwise intractable problems in the design of virtual agents or robotics;orin providing novel insight into disease progress in genomics and Neuroimaging (NI), understanding humanbrain function, the automation of industrial processes based on computer vision, and so on. In this paper, themost relevant advances from the last few years in AI and several applications to neuroscience, neuroimaging,computer vision, and robotics are presented, reviewed and discussed. In this way, we summarize the state-ofthe-art in AI methods, models and applications within a collection of works presented at the 9th InternationalConference on the Interplay between Natural and Artificial Computation (IWINAC). The works presentedin this paper are excellent examples of new scientific discoveries made in laboratories that are successfullytransferred to real-life applications. © 2023, The Authors. The areas of machine learning and knowledge discovery in databases have considerably matured in recent years. In this article, we briefly review recent developments as well as classical algorithms that stood the test of time. Our goal is to provide a general introduction into different tasks such as learning from tabular data, behavioral data, or textual data, with a particular focus on actual and potential applications in behavioral sciences. The supplemental appendix to the article also provides practical guidance for using the methods by pointing the reader to proven software implementations. Accurate prediction of sediment settling is critical for management of coastal ecosystems, but complex estuarine processes that influence sediment deposition and erosion present a major modelling challenge. This study introduces a proof-of-concept framework that integrates machine learning (ML) into environmental simulations to improve accuracy and efficiency by modelling dynamic sediment flocculation processes and their influence on particle size, enabling a more precise determination of settling velocity. Environmental factors influencing in-situ sediment particle size were used to train a regression model based on coeval measurements of three key parameters: salinity, shear rate and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). This regression model was developed using ML and integrated into a fully coupled current-wave-sediment model to simulate the flocculation response to these three parameters. The integrated model framework demonstrates its reliability and accuracy when evaluated against the in-situ measurements, satellite-derived SSC for the Fitzroy Estuary (Great Barrier Reef), and a parametric flocculation model that only relates settling velocity to SSC. We present an example of the ML-based approach outperforming a parametric model by capturing nonlinear particle-hydrodynamic interactions while maintaining computational efficiency, enabling high-resolution SSC simulations. This work demonstrates an advancement for hybrid modelling using rapidly evolving ML applications, offering a scalable tool for sediment transport and water quality management. © 2025, The Authors. We propose the application of a novel sub-ontology extractionmethodology for achieving interoperability and improving the semantic validity of information retrieval in the medical information systems (MIS) domain. The system offers advanced profiling of a user’s field of specialization by exploiting the concept of sub-ontology extraction, i.e., each sub-ontology may subsequently represent a particular user profile. Semantic profiling of a user’s field of specialization or interest is necessary functionality in any medical domain information retrieval system;this is because the (structural and semantic) extent of information sources is massive and individual users are only likely to be interested in specific parts of the overall knowledge documents on the basis of their area of specialization. The prototypical system, OntoMOVE, has been specifically designed for application in themedical information systems domain. OntoMOVE utilizes semantic web standards like RDF(S) and OWL in addition to medical domain standards and vocabularies encompassed by the UMLS knowledge sources. © 2018, The Authors. As Linked data technologies mature geospatial data institutions are seeking to exploit these advantages and selectively serve their commercially valuable data to customers on the web. An access control solution is required to ensure customers are not accessing unauthorized data. In this paper we present a fine grained and flexible access control method for geospatial Linked data. Our declarative approach provides a vocabulary to model data licenses and templates. A license models what a customer is allowed to access at a fine granularity and a template models how data is allowed to be accessed. Each template contains variables and the values that these variables are allowed to contain are specified. This provides great flexibility and allows the creation of templates for a range of different data access use cases. We propose an implementation architecture for our approach which proposes a license and template-based access control web service that sits on top of a triple store, SPARQL processor and a RESTful API for access. We also present a case study where a prototype implementation of our access control approach was applied to Ordnance Survey Ireland's controlled access geospatial Linked data. © CEUR-WS. Recently, super-resolution methods pursue visual pleasant details attract more attention in academic circle. Unlike former accurate driving models, they leverage new losses measured the difference of features extracting from a pre-trained deep learning model. Moreover, the popular GANs structure are introduced to approach better outputs. In general, these new visual feeling promoting losses are constrained by the learning ability of model and effected by the weakness of GANs. In order to address these problems, we propose a novel SR method to generating abundant details. Based on former SR methods and texture generated models, we combine new model constructure and integrated loss function to achieve our goal. The new constructure derives from the very thought that more information from the LR input leads to more accurate results. The new integrated loss try to decrease the weakness of each one by corresponding loss.. Experiments show that our model achieves higher quality generations than former methods.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has shocked the entire world with its fairly rapid spread and has challenged different sectors. One of the most effective ways to limit its spread is the early and accurate diagnosing infected patients. Medical imaging, such as X-ray and Computed Tomography (CT), combined with the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), plays an essential role in supporting medical personnel in the diagnosis process. Thus, in this article five different deep learning models (ResNet18, ResNet34, InceptionV3, InceptionResNetV2 and DenseNet161) and their ensemble, using majority voting have been used to classify COVID-19, pneumoniæ and healthy subjects using chest X-ray images. Multilabel classification was performed to predict multiple pathologies for each patient, if present. Firstly, the interpretability of each of the networks was thoroughly studied using local interpretability methods - occlusion, saliency, input X gradient, guided backpropagation, integrated gradients, and DeepLIFT, and using a global technique - neuron activation profiles. The mean Micro-F1 score of the models for COVID-19 classifications ranges from 0.66 to 0.875, and is 0.89 for the ensemble of the network models. The qualitative results showed that the ResNets were the most interpretable models. This research demonstrates the importance of using interpretability methods to compare different models before making a decision regarding the best performing model. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Deep learning (DL) architectures for super-resolution (SR) normally contain tremendous parameters, which has been regarded as the crucial advantage for obtaining satisfying performance. However, with the widespread use of mobile phones for taking and retouching photos, this character greatly hampers the deployment of DL-SR models on the mobile devices. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a super lightweight SR network: s-LWSR. There are mainly three contributions in our work. Firstly, in order to efficiently abstract features from the low resolution image, we build an information pool to mix multi-level information from the first half part of the pipeline. Accordingly, the information pool feeds the second half part with the combination of hierarchical features from the previous layers. Secondly, we employ a compression module to further decrease the size of parameters. Intensive analysis confirms its capacity of trade-off between model complexity and accuracy. Thirdly, by revealing the specific role of activation in deep models, we remove several activation layers in our SR model to retain more information for performance improvement. Extensive experiments show that our s-LWSR, with limited parameters and operations, can achieve similar performance to other cumbersome DL-SR methods. Copyright © 2019, The Authors.
