In the realm of recommendation systems, achieving real-time performance in embedding similarity tasks is often hindered by the limitations of traditional Top-K sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV) methods, which suffer from high latency due to inefficient memory access patterns. This paper identifies these critical gaps and introduces AccelES, a novel approach that significantly enhances the efficiency of Top-K SpMV. Our method employs a two-stage calculation scheme: the first stage utilizes a compact, low-bit dataset to quickly identify the most relevant entries, while the second stage performs full-precision calculations solely on this pruned subset, thereby minimizing computational overhead. Furthermore, AccelES incorporates innovative matrix representations, Ultra-CSR and Random-CSR, which optimize memory bandwidth utilization. Experimental results demonstrate that AccelES accelerates performance, surpassing state-of-the-art FPGA, GPU, and CPU solutions by factors of 3.4×, 2.5×, and 153.3×, respectively, under controlled conditions. These advancements not only enhance processing speed but also significantly improve real-time performance in recommendation systems, establishing AccelES as a pivotal contribution to the field of Top-K sparse matrix-vector multiplication.

DRUPI: dataSET REDUCTION USING PRIVILEGED INFORMATION

dataset reduction (DR) seeks to select or distill samples from large datasets into smaller subsets while preserving performance on target tasks. Existing methods primarily focus on pruning or synthesizing data in the same format as the original dataset, typically the input data and corresponding labels. However, in DR settings, we find it is possible to synthesize more information beyond the data-label pair as an additional learning target to facilitate model training. In this paper, we introduce dataset Reduction Using Privileged Information (DRUPI), which enriches DR by synthesizing privileged information alongside the reduced dataset. This privileged information can take the form of feature labels or attention labels, providing auxiliary supervision to improve model learning. Our findings reveal that effective feature labels must balance between being overly discriminative and excessively diverse, with a moderate level proving optimal for improving the reduced dataset’s efficacy. Extensive experiments on ImageNet, CIFAR-10/100, and Tiny ImageNet demonstrate that DRUPI integrates seamlessly with existing dataset reduction methods, offering significant performance gains. In this paper, the combination of the variable precision rough set and the limited tolerance relation under multi-granularity is explored. As an extension of rough set model, Multi-granularity variable precision limited tolerance rough set model is con-structed. Properties of upper and lower approximation operator and detailed structure of object class through threshold are discussed. The Go language (Go/Golang) has been attracting increasing attention from the industry over recent years due to its strong concurrency support and ease of deployment. This programming language encourages developers to use channel-based concurrency, which simplifies the development of concurrent programs. Unfortunately, it also introduces new concurrency problems that differ from those caused by the mechanism of shared memory concurrency. However, there are only few works that aim to detect such Go-specific concurrency issues. Even state-of-the-art testing tools will miss critical concurrent bugs that require fine-grained and effective interleaving exploration. This paper presents GoPie, a novel testing approach for detecting Go concurrency bugs through primitive-constrained interleaving exploration. GoPie utilizes execution histories to identify new interleavings instead of relying on exhaustive exploration or random scheduling. To evaluate its performance, we applied GoPie to existing benchmarks and large-scale open-source projects. Results show that GoPie can effectively explore concurrent interleavings and detect significantly more bugs in the benchmark. Furthermore, it uncovered 11 unique previously unknown concurrent bugs, and 9 of which have been confirmed.

Speech separation aims to equip machines with the human ability of selective listening, i.e. to focus attention on specific information in spoken communication. Studies have shown that the language spoken in a cocktail party scenario matters. While the development of speech separation models can leverage extensive databases, for the majority of languages only very limited data is available. This work presents the very first study on speech separation for low-resource languages. We choose blind source separation as the task to be studied and analyze three strategies to overcome the data scarcity of two low-resource languages from the GlobalPhoneMS2 database. We show that data from other languages can be used to develop models that work for low-resource languages. Finetuning additionally boosts the performance, and training on multiple languages increases both performance and robustness. We show that dynamic mixing in the development helps to find a trade-off between performance and development time.

PESFormer: Boosting Macro- and Micro-expression Spotting with Direct Timestamp Encoding

The task of macro- and micro-expression spotting aims to precisely localize and categorize temporal expression instances within untrimmed videos. Given the sparse distribution and varying durations of expressions, existing anchor-based methods often represent instances by encoding their deviations from predefined anchors. Additionally, these methods typically slice the untrimmed videos into fixed-length sliding windows. However, anchor-based encoding often fails to capture all training intervals, and slicing the original video as sliding windows can result in valuable training intervals being discarded. To overcome these limitations, we introduce PESFormer, a simple yet effective model based on the vision transformer architecture to achieve point-to-interval expression spotting. PESFormer employs a direct timestamp encoding (DTE) approach to replace anchors, enabling binary classification of each timestamp instead of optimizing entire ground truths. Thus, all training intervals are retained in the form of discrete timestamps. To maximize the utilization of training intervals, we enhance the preprocessing process by replacing the short videos produced through the sliding window method. Instead, we implement a strategy that involves zero-padding the untrimmed training videos to create uniform, longer videos of a predetermined duration. This operation efficiently preserves the original training intervals and eliminates video slice enhancement. Extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations on three datasets – CAS(ME)2, CAS(ME)3 and SAMM-LV – demonstrate that our PESFormer outperforms existing techniques, achieving the best performance. A growing number of applications are moving to serverless architectures for high elasticity and fine-grained billing. For stateful applications, however, the use of serverless architectures is likely to lead to significant performance degradation, as frequent data sharing between different execution stages involves time-consuming remote storage access. Current platforms leverage memory cache to speed up remote access. However, conventional caching strategies show limited performance improvement. We experimentally find that the reason is that current strategies overlook the stage-dependent access patterns of stateful serverless applications, i.e., data that are read multiple times across stages (denoted as multi-read data) are wrongly evicted by data that are read only once (denoted as read-once data), causing a high cache miss ***, we propose a new caching strategy, Duo, whose design principle is to cache multi-read data as long as possible. Specifically, Duo contains a large cache list and a small cache list, which act as Leader list and Wingman list, respectively. Leader list ignores the data that is read for the first time to prevent itself from being polluted by massive read-once data at each stage. Wingman list inspects the data that are ignored or evicted by Leader list, and pre-fetches the data that will probably be read again based on the observation that multi-read data usually appear periodically in groups. Compared to the state-of-the-art works, Duo improves hit ratio by 1.1×-2.1× and reduces the data sharing overhead by 25%-62%.

Modern storage systems typically replicate data on multiple servers to provide high reliability and availability. However, most commercially-deployed datastores often fail to offer low latency, high throughput, and strong consistency at the same time. This paper presents Whale, a Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) based primary-backup replication system for in-memory datastores. Whale achieves both low latency and strong consistency by decoupling metadata multicasting from data replication for all backup nodes, and using an optimistic commitment mechanism to respond to client write requests earlier. Whale achieves high throughput by propagating writes from the primary node to backup nodes asynchronously via RDMA-optimized chain replication. To further reduce the cost of data replication, we design a log-structured datastore to fully exploit the advantages of one-sided RDMA and Persistent Memory (PM). We implement Whale on a cluster equipped with PM and InfiniBand RDMA networks. Experimental results show that Whale achieves much higher throughput and lower latency than state-of-the-art replication protocols.

Streaming graph processing needs to timely evaluate continuous queries. Prior systems suffer from massive redundant computations due to the irregular order of processing vertices influenced by updates. To address this issue, we propose ACGraph, a novel streaming graph processing approach for monotonic graph algorithms. It maintains dependence trees during runtime, and makes affected vertices processed in a top-to-bottom order in the hierarchy of the dependence trees, thus normalizing the state propagation order and coalescing of multiple propagation to the same vertices. Experimental results show that ACGraph reduces the number of updates by 50% on average, and achieves the speedup of 1.75~7.43× over state-of-the-art systems.

In this paper, we propose a new type of item in data streams, called simplex items. Simplex items have frequencies in consecutive p windows that can be approximated by a polynomial of degree at most k, where k = 0, 1, 2. These low-order representable simplex items have a wide range of potential applications. For example, when k = 1, we can leverage these items whose frequency has obvious linear increase or decrease to speed up the running time of a class of machine learning models and detect network attacks such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS), etc. To find k-degree simplex items in real time, we propose a novel sketch, namely X-Sketch, to accurately record simplex items in a compact space. The key idea of X-Sketch is to effectively filter out non-simplex items with less memory overhead, and then monitor the remaining potential simplex items and keep those items with more consecutive windows. We conduct extensive experiments, and the experimental results show that the F1 Score of X-Sketch is on average 68.6%, 57.9%, and 42.2% higher than the baseline solution for k = 0, 1, 2, respectively. Finally, we also provide a case study that applies X-Sketch to "accelerate"the two machine learning models through end-to-end experiments. We have released our source code at GitHub. © 2023 IEEE.
