Particularly in transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) communities, it is an increasingly common practice to publicly share one’s personal pronouns so that we may be gendered correctly in others’ speech. Many of us have nuanced desires for how we are gendered, leading us to use more complex descriptions of our wishes;for example, the descriptor ‘she/they’. We observe that these descriptions of our wishes have the structure of a little language all their own. We thus propose formal logic as a tool for expressing one’s personal pronouns and potentially other aspects of gender. We explore three potential logical foundations (linear logic, temporal logic, and free logic with definite descriptions) and their trade-offs. Our foremost motivation for this proposal is play, affirming that one can be both a logician and TGNB at the same time. We present formalization as something that can continue to evolve over time with society’s understanding of gender. This implies that outreach is a major potential application: we can show TGNB youth that they belong in logic and have a unique contribution to make. Contrastive Learning with Auxiliary User Detection for Identifying Activities

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) is an important task in ubiquitous computing, with impactful real-world applications. While recent state-of-the-art HAR research has demonstrated impressive performance, some key aspects remain under-explored. First, we believe that for optimal performance, HAR models should be both Context-Aware (CA) and personalized. However, prior work has predominantly focused on being Context-Aware (CA), largely ignoring being User-Aware (UA). We argue that learning user-specific differences in performing various activities is as critical as considering user context while performing HAR tasks. Secondly, we believe that the predictions of HAR models should be unified, reliably recognizing the same activity even when performed by different users. As such, the representations utilized by CA and UA models should explicitly place different users performing the same activity closer together. Moreover, identifying the user performing an activity is useful in applications such as thwarting cheating by having another person perform medically-prescribed activities. To bridge this gap, we introduce Contrastive Learning with Auxiliary User Detection for Identifying Activities (CLAUDIA), a novel framework designed to address these issues. Specifically, we expand the contextual scope of the CA-HAR task by integrating User Identification (UI) within the CA-HAR framework, jointly predicting both CA-HAR and UI in a new task called User and Context-Aware HAR (UCA-HAR). This approach enriches personalized and contextual understanding by jointly learning user-invariant and user-specific patterns. Inspired by state-of-the-art designs in the visual domain, we introduce a supervised contrastive loss objective on instance-instance pairs to enhance model efficacy and improve learned feature quality. Inoculation Strategies for Bounded Degree Graphs

We study the inoculation game: a game-theoretic abstraction of epidemic containment played on an undirected graph G: each player is associated with a node in G and can either acquire protection from a contagious process or risk infection. After decisions are made, an infection starts at a random node v and propagates through all unprotected nodes reachable from v. It is known that the price of anarchy (PoA) in n-node graphs can be as large as Θ(n). Our main result is a tight upper bound of o(Formula presented) on the PoA, where ∆ is the maximum degree of the graph. Indeed, we provide constructions of graphs with maximum degree ∆ for which the PoA is Ω(Formula presented). We also study additional factors that can reduce the PoA, such as higher thresholds for contagion and varying the costs of becoming infected vs. acquiring protection. © 2024, The Authors. In this paper, we enhance and customize the existing BERTopic framework to develop and implement an automated pipeline that delivers a more coherent and diverse set of topics with an even moderate dataset. More specifically, the contributions of this work are threefold: (1) integrate a dynamic and advanced optimizer into the existing BERTopic framework to learn the optimal number of dimensions of different document embeddings, (2) develop a k-means-based algorithm in the optimizer to support the dimension-embedding learning, and (3) conduct an extensive experimental study on three distinct types of datasets, including DBPedia, AG News, and Reuters, to evaluate the performance of our approach in terms of the topic quality (TQ) score computed by the topic coherence and the topic diversity. From the results, we can conclude that our enhanced, automated BERTopic framework with its dimension-embedding learning algorithm on documents outperforms the TQ score of the existing framework by 4.49% (before removing the stop words) and 16.52% (after removing the stop words) among all the four representable document-embedding approaches, including the BERTopic's Default Sentence Transformer, Google's Universal Sentence Encoder, OpenAI GPT-2, and our investigators' developed Context-aware Embedding Model, on all the three datasets. © 2022 IEEE.

The authors present and evaluate an unplugged activity to introduce parallel computing concepts to undergraduate students. Students in five CS classrooms used a deck of playing cards in small groups to consider how parallelization can improve performance and how improvement decreases with increased parallelization. Before and after the activity, students took a short survey about their solution and their ideas about parallelism. The authors carried out this activity in seven courses at five institutions in the 2023-2024 academic year. The results showed that students had an increased appreciation for parallelization and this type of activity. © 2024 IEEE.

Thanks to breakthroughs in AI and Deep learning methodology, computer vision techniques are rapidly improving. Most computer vision applications require sophisticated image segmentation to comprehend what is image and to make an analysis of each section easier. Training deep learning networks for semantic segmentation required a large amount of annotated data, which presents a major challenge in practice as it is expensive and labor-intensive to produce such data. The paper presents 1. Self-supervised techniques to boost semantic segmentation performance using multi-task learning with Depth prediction and Surface Normalization . 2. Performance evaluation of the different types of weighing techniques (UW, Nash-MTL) used for Multi-task learning. NY2D dataset was used for performance evaluation. Foodborne illnesses pose a threat to public health, leading to morbidity, mortality, and economic burden annually. Social media, while providing a rich timely source for training AI models for surveillance, requires effective tools for annotation. While Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown promise for generating simple labels, here hierarchical labels composed of entity types like food type and symptom (at individual word level) and the foodborne illness event (at complete post level) are required. For this, we introduce ICL2FID, the first LLM-based hierarchical labeling framework designed to annotate social media posts for foodborne illness detection at two levels using only a few demonstration examples. To utilize the interconnection between post and word levels, ICL2FID instructs the LLM to leverage information from one level when predicting the other level. To combat model hallucination and cyclic dependencies, a verification step improves evidence propagation between interconnected word and post-level labeling tasks. Strategies for custom selection of demonstration examples are designed reducing biases and increasing representation. We compare ICL2FID against traditional supervised learning and other LLM methods, demonstrating that it not only achieves superior accuracy but does so at a fraction of the cost and time. These findings highlight ICL2FID’s potential as a viable alternative for hierarchical label generation in scenarios with limited resources and huge data sets. The type and quality of education that a student receives can have a profound impact on their career. In contrast to education that is not intentionally organized to help students achieve specific career objectives, career-based education seeks to provide students with the skills that are required to achieve specific career goals. In this work, we propose a course recommendation framework that is designed to recommend courses based directly on their ability to teach skills relevant to a user-specified career goal. Within our framework, course recommendations are generated in a transparent manner, using skills to bridge between jobs and courses in a knowledge-based inference procedure. Due to the procedure’s transparency, our system is able to provide faithful template-based explanations detailing why each recommended course was chosen for recommendation. Our framework contrasts with other course recommendation systems in the literature that lack the ability to explain their choices and therefore may lack trustworthiness from the perspective of a user. The proposed framework has several applications, including assisting students with course planning, as well as aiding with curriculum evaluation and development by providing insight into the usefulness of specific courses to specific careers. We conduct a preliminary evaluation of our system, and its performance is competitive against two baselines. We provide all the resources needed to reproduce our results. In this work-in-progress paper, we report our experience of applying project-based learning (PjBL) in a web technology course, with a focus on how different feedback tactics affect students' learning outcomes. Giving high-quality feedback can have an immediate impact on students' learning progress. Although process-level feedback is considered more effective than task-level feedback in traditional pedagogies, it is still unclear whether this conclusion can be exacerbated or mitigated when applied to PjBL, as PjBL emphasizes students' ownership and authenticity. We divided students into two groups and applied different feedback strategies. We report findings and insights to help instructors develop feedback policies and practices that are effective and likely to benefit students. Our results suggest that giving low-level feedback still improves students' learning outcomes in the context of PjBL, especially for technical tasks. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2023.

The use of host intrusion detection systems shows promising results in detecting APT campaigns due to the use of systems logs as source data to get more information about system environment. However, dealing with the increase of logs in time while tracking the execution context is a challenge for security analysts. Therefore, this work presents backbone extraction as a crucial preprocessing step, filtering out irrelevant logs. As the logs are modeled as provenance graphs, we discard spurious edges to detect residuals with distinctive node and edge distributions that indicate security threats. By applying our methodology to state-of-the-art benchmark datasets, we observed an increase in the performance of one-class classifiers by up to 62% on F1-score and 48% on recall in the Streamspot dataset and by up to 40% on F1-score and 33% on recall in the DARPA3 THEIA dataset. Moreover, our results indicate mitigation of the dependency explosion problem and underscore the ability of our methodology to improve the detection landscape by shrinking graph sizes without losing essential aspects to characterize attacks.
