Schizophrenia (SZ) is a prevalent mental disorder characterized by cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes. Symptoms of SZ include hallucinations, illusions, delusions, lack of motivation, and difficulties in concentration. While the exact causes of SZ remain unproven, factors such as brain injuries, stress, and psychotropic drugs have been implicated in its development. SZ can be classified into different types, including paranoid, disorganized, catatonic, undifferentiated, and residual. Diagnosing SZ involves employing various tools, including clinical interviews, physical examinations, psychological evaluations, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), and neuroimaging techniques. Electroencephalography (EEG) recording is a significant functional neuroimaging modality that provides valuable insights into brain function during SZ. However, EEG signal analysis poses challenges for neurologists and scientists due to the presence of artifacts, long-term recordings, and the utilization of multiple channels. To address these challenges, researchers have introduced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, encompassing conventional machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods, to aid in SZ diagnosis. This study reviews papers focused on SZ diagnosis utilizing EEG signals and AI methods. The introduction section provides a comprehensive explanation of SZ diagnosis methods and intervention techniques. Subsequently, review papers in this field are discussed, followed by an introduction to the AI methods employed for SZ diagnosis and a summary of relevant papers presented in tabular form. Additionally, this study reports on the most significant challenges encountered in SZ diagnosis, as identified through a review of papers in this field. Future directions to overcome these challenges are also addressed. The discussion section examines the specific details of each paper, culminating in the presentation of conclusions and findings. © 2023,

With recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, unmanned vehicle swarms have received great attention from both academia and industry due to their potential to provide services that are difficult and dangerous to perform by humans. However, learning and coordinating movements and actions for a large number of unmanned vehicles in complex and dynamic environments introduce significant challenges to conventional AI methods. Generative AI (GAI), with its capabilities in complex data feature extraction, transformation, and enhancement, offers great potential in solving these challenges of unmanned vehicle swarms. For that, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey on applications, challenges, and opportunities of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms. Specifically, we first present an overview of unmanned vehicles and unmanned vehicle swarms as well as their use cases and existing issues. Then, an in-depth background of various GAI techniques together with their capabilities in enhancing unmanned vehicle swarms are provided. After that, we present a comprehensive review on the applications and challenges of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms with various insights and discussions. Finally, we highlight open issues of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms and discuss potential research directions. © 2024, CC BY.

Resistive Random Access Memory (ReRAM) Crossbars are a promising process-in-memory technology to reduce enormous data movement overheads of large-scale graph processing between computation and memory units. ReRAM cells can combine with crossbar arrays to effectively accelerate graph processing, and partitioning ReRAM crossbar arrays into Operation Units (OUs) can further improve computation accuracy of ReRAM crossbars. The operation unit utilization was not optimized in previous work, incurring extra cost. This paper proposes a two-stage algorithm with a crossbar OU-aware scheme for sparse graph index remapping for ReRAM (SGIRR) crossbars, mitigating the influence of graph sparsity. In particular, this paper is the first to consider the given operation unit size with the remapping index algorithm, optimizing the operation unit and power dissipation. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm reduces the utilization of crossbar OUs by 31.4%, improves the total OU block usage by 10.6%, and saves energy consumption by 17.2%, on average.

Eye tracking data analytics in virtual reality training: Application in Deepwater Horizon oil drilling operation

Virtual reality (VR) enable us to train in a safe environment using computer-generated simulations. One such simulated environment is the Deepwater Horizon operation, and VR enables us to evaluate trainees’ and operators’ situation awareness (SA) in a non-hazardous environment. One unobtrusive and viable SA evaluation method might be the use of eye movements, specifically the time-ordered visual scan paths. In this research, we investigated how SA can be associated with visual scan paths in an anomaly detection task within the oil drilling rig virtual reality simulator. The results show that the trainees having lower SA tended to create random visual scan paths whereas the trainees having higher SA tended to create concentrated and refined visual scan paths. The results show promise in developing timely intervention methods through analyzing the visual scan path characteristics of the trainees.

Trackable Agent-based Evolution Models at Wafer Scale

Continuing improvements in computing hardware are poised to transform capabilities for in silico modeling of cross-scale phenomena underlying major open questions in evolutionary biology and artificial life, such as transitions in individuality, eco-evolutionary dynamics, and rare evolutionary events. Emerging ML/AI-oriented hardware accelerators, like the 850,000 processor Cerebras Wafer Scale Engine (WSE), hold particular promise. However, many practical challenges remain in conducting informative evolution experiments that efficiently utilize these platforms’ large processor counts. Here, we focus on the problem of extracting phylogenetic information from agent-based evolution on the WSE platform. This goal drove significant refinements to decentralized in silico phylogenetic tracking, reported here. These improvements yield order-of-magnitude performance improvements. We also present an asynchronous island-based genetic algorithm (GA) framework for WSE hardware. Emulated and on-hardware GA benchmarks with a simple tracking-enabled agent model clock upwards of 1 million generations a minute for population sizes reaching 16 million agents. This pace enables quadrillions of agent replication events a day. We validate phylogenetic reconstructions from these trials and demonstrate their suitability for inference of underlying evolutionary conditions. In particular, we demonstrate extraction, from wafer-scale simulation, of clear phylometric signals that differentiate runs with adaptive dynamics enabled versus disabled. Together, these benchmark and validation trials reflect strong potential for highly scalable agent-based evolution simulation that is both efficient and observable. Developed capabilities will bring entirely new classes of previously intractable research questions within reach, benefiting further explorations within the evolutionary biology and artificial life communities across a variety of emerging high-performance computing platforms. Semi-supervised learning algorithms make use of both labelled training data and unlabelled data. However, the visual domain gap between these sets poses a challenge which prevents deep learning models from obtaining the results they have achieved most especially in the field of medical imaging. Recently, self-training with deep learning has become a powerful approach to leverage labelled training and unlabelled data. However, a challenge of generating noisy pseudo-labels and placing over-confident labelling belief on incorrect classes leads to deviation from the solution. To solve this challenge, the study investigates a curriculum-styled approach for deep semi-supervised segmentation which relaxes and treats pseudo-labels as continuous hidden variables by developing an adaptive pseudo-label generation strategy to jointly optimized the pseudo-label generation and selection process. A regularization scheme is further proposed to smoothen the probability outputs and sharpen the less represented pseudo-label regions. The proposed method was evaluated on three publicly available Computer Tomography (CT) scan benchmarks and extensive experiments on all modules have demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed method. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In agricultural water research, the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has emerged as a pivotal approach for large-scale data collection. Water availability in the context of water quality is very important, both for domestic and industrial purposes. For domestic purposes, drinking water and bathing water are separated. Meanwhile, for the palm oil industry, boiler filler is differentiated from additional process water (dilution water). Water quality parameters can be assessed from turbidity and Total Dissolve Solid (TDS). Measurements using measuring instruments separately and repeatedly require significant energy, time, and costs. This research was conducted with the primary objective of presenting a novel method for categorizing water quality with the approach of IoT sensor technology. The research methodology entailed the utilization of an integrated IoT water sensors system in conjunction with manual water categorization. The methods consist of (1) system design, (2) design and installation of sensor and IoT-based microcontrollers, and (3) accuracy and precision testing compared with laboratory measurements. The precision of the integrated IoT water sensors was assessed through a dedicated sensor precision test, resulting in an accuracy rate of 94.4% for the turbidity sensor and 97.5% for the TDS sensor. Notably, this approach successfully discriminated drinking water with valid categorization, while other water types, including groundwater, water with tea, and water with coffee, yielded null categorization results.

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) frequently face class imbalance issues, especially in heterogeneous graphs. Existing GNNs often assume balanced class sizes, which isn’t true in many cases. Applying them directly to imbalanced data can lead to sub-optimal performance. Traditional oversampling methods, while effective, risk overfitting and face difficulties in reintegrating synthetic samples into the original graph. In this study, we introduce Framework of Imbalanced Node Classification on heterogeneous graph neural network with GAN (FincGAN), a new framework that utilizes oversampling techniques to address class imbalance in heterogeneous graphs. Instead of duplicating existing samples, FincGAN employs a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to create synthetic samples and uses deep learning-based edge generators to connect them back to the original graph. Our evaluations on spam user detection in the Amazon and Yelp Review datasets show that FincGAN outperforms baseline models in all essential metrics, including F-score and AUC-PRC score, showing its effectiveness in addressing class imbalance.

In the current landscape of deep learning research, there is a predominant emphasis on achieving high predictive accuracy in supervised tasks involving large image and language datasets. However, a broader perspective reveals a multitude of overlooked metrics, tasks, and data types, such as uncertainty, active and continual learning, and scientific data, that demand attention. Bayesian deep learning (BDL) constitutes a promising avenue, offering advantages across these diverse settings. This paper posits that BDL can elevate the capabilities of deep learning. It revisits the strengths of BDL, acknowledges existing challenges, and highlights some exciting research avenues aimed at addressing these obstacles. Looking ahead, the discussion focuses on possible ways to combine large-scale foundation models with BDL to unlock their full potential. Copyright 2024 by the author(s)
