Momentum-Based Distributed Economic Dispatch of Smart Grids in Time-Varying Directed Networks

In this paper, we investigate the economic dispatch problem of smart grids in time-varying directed networks. The EDP essentially revolves around optimizing the distribution of generation power amongst multiple generators, with the aim of fulfilling load demands at the lowest possible total generation cost, while strictly conforming to the constraints imposed by the local generation capacity. For a faster resolution of the EDP, we propose an efficient distributed accelerated economic dispatch algorithm that incorporates a unified momentum acceleration strategy into the push-pull deviation tracking approach. The involved acceleration strategy under specific momentum parameters includes two well-known acceleration strategies, i.e., the heavy-ball and Nesterov acceleration strategies, which is more flexible and provides additional improvements in convergence. We present rigorously theoretical proof of linear convergence to the optimal dispatch with explicit bounds for step size and momentum parameters. Finally, to verify the effectiveness of our algorithm and the correctness of the theoretical analysis, we conduct simulations of diverse EDP studies in smart grids. © 2013 IEEE.

A Dynamical Clipping Approach with Task Feedback for Proximal Policy Optimization

Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) has been broadly applied to robotics learning, showcasing stable training performance. However, the fixed clipping bound setting may limit the performance of PPO. Specifically, there is no theoretical proof that the optimal clipping bound remains consistent throughout the entire training process. Meanwhile, previous researches suggest that a fixed clipping bound restricts the policy's ability to explore. Therefore, many past studies have aimed to dynamically adjust the PPO clipping bound to enhance PPO's performance. However, the objective of these approaches are not directly aligned with the objective of reinforcement learning (RL) tasks, which is to maximize the cumulative Return. Unlike previous clipping approaches, we propose a bi-level proximal policy optimization objective that can dynamically adjust the clipping bound to better reflect the preference (maximizing Return) of these RL tasks. Based on this bi-level proximal policy optimization paradigm, we introduce a new algorithm named Preference based Proximal Policy Optimization (Pb-PPO). Pb-PPO utilizes a multi-armed bandit approach to refelect RL preference, recommending the clipping bound for PPO that can maximizes the current Return. Therefore, Pb-PPO results in greater stability and improved performance compared to PPO with a fixed clipping bound. We test Pb-PPO on locomotion benchmarks across multiple environments, including Gym-Mujoco and legged-gym. Additionally, we validate Pb-PPO on customized navigation tasks. Meanwhile, we conducted comparisons with PPO using various fixed clipping bounds and various of clipping approaches. A sugarcane yield of one plantation area depends on several independent variables. Practically it is challenging to predict accurately by using conventional methods. This study aims to develop a decision model based on a combination of fuzzy logic and object-oriented methods to predict sugarcane yield. The research is conducted in four main stages, employing object-oriented methods for model design and fuzzy logic for model construction. Object and activity diagrams are used for the object-oriented model design. The fuzzy membership functions employed are a combination of trapezoidal and triangular shapes. The resulting decision model can simulate 2,225 data from plantation areas in Indonesia. Based on the 10 examples of plantation area data in Indonesia, plantation number one obtained the largest sugarcane yield, which was 4.79%, with a similarity value of 0.90 (when compared to manual calculations as its ground truth). This similarity value is a higher value when compared to the average similarity value, which is 0.89.

Breast cancer is an occurrence of cancer that attacks breast tissue and is the most common cancer among women worldwide, affecting one in eight women. In this modern world, breast cancer image classification simplifies the process of analyzing, providing objective and accurate results. By leveraging machine learning algorithms and computer vision techniques, we developed breast cancer detection. The dataset is histopathology dataset from BreakHis and UNHAS Hospital. We chose the ConvNeXt-Tiny model then modified the classifier head as the proposed method. Before the dataset is processed by the model, we augment the images by applying random horizontal and vertical flips, adjustments to brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue using color jitter. The augmentation process simulates real-world variance and enhances the model's ability to generalize to unseen data. Our proposed model gained better performance (accuracy, F1-Score) results compared two other techniques to VGG16 and SVM. According to our experiments, the F1-Score for the ConvNeXt-Tiny model with classifier head modification is higher at 0.9516, than the gain for VGG16 at 0.9292, and the gain for the SVM at 0.83.

The effect of visual advanced driver assistance systems on a following human driver in a mixed-traffic condition

Rapid development in vehicular technology has caused more automated vehicle control to increase on the roads. Studies showed that driving in mixed traffic with an autonomous vehicle (AV) had a negative impact on the time headway (THW) of conventional vehicles (CVs) (i.e., driven by humans). To address this issue, there is a need to equip CV with visual advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs) that helps the driver maintain safe headway when driving near AVs. This study examines the perception of drivers using visual ADAS and their associated risk while driving behind the AV at constant and varying speeds. The preliminary results showed that while visual ADAS could help drivers keep the safe THW, it could affect drivers’ ability to react to emergencies. This implies that visual modality alone might not be sufficient and therefore requires some other feedback or intelligent transport systems to help drivers maintain safe driving in a mixed-traffic condition.

To accurately assess the dynamic impact of a company’s activities on its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores, we have initiated a series of shared tasks, named ML-ESG. These tasks adhere to the MSCI guidelines for annotating news articles across various languages. This paper details the third iteration of our series, ML-ESG-3, with a focus on impact duration inference—a task that poses significant challenges in estimating the enduring influence of events, even for human analysts. In ML-ESG-3, we provide datasets in five languages (Chinese, English, French, Korean, and Japanese) and share insights from our experience in compiling such subjective datasets. Additionally, this paper reviews the methodologies proposed by ML-ESG-3 participants and offers a comparative analysis of the models’ performances. Concluding the paper, we introduce the concept for the forthcoming series of shared tasks, namely multi-lingual ESG promise verification, and discuss its potential contributions to the field. © 2024 ELRA Language Resource Association.

The rapid advancement of immersive technologies has propelled the development of the Metaverse, where the convergence of virtual and physical realities necessitates the generation of high-quality, photorealistic images to enhance user experience. However, generating these images, especially through Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs), in mobile edge computing environments presents significant challenges due to the limited computing resources of edge devices and the dynamic nature of wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates contract-inspired contest theory, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and GDMs to optimize image generation in these resource-constrained environments. The framework addresses the critical challenges of resource allocation and semantic data transmission quality by incentivizing edge devices to efficiently transmit high-quality semantic data, which is essential for creating realistic and immersive images. The use of contest and contract theory ensures that edge devices are motivated to allocate resources effectively, while DRL dynamically adjusts to network conditions, optimizing the overall image generation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the quality of generated images but also achieves superior convergence speed and stability compared to traditional methods. This makes the framework particularly effective for optimizing complex resource allocation tasks in mobile edge Metaverse applications, offering enhanced performance and efficiency in creating immersive virtual environments. © 2025, CC BY.

Searching for symbolic models plays an important role in a wide range of domains such as neural architecture search and automatic program synthesis. Genetic programming is a promising stochastic method for searching effective symbolic models within an acceptable time. The genetic programming performance is closely related to the hardness of the fitness landscape. A better fitness landscape with less local optima normally implies that it is easier to search for better solutions. In recent years, there have been many studies enhancing genetic programming performance by forming better fitness landscapes. However, the better design of the fitness landscape highly relies on specific domain knowledge and consumes a lot of expert effort. This paper proposes a fitness landscape optimization method to automatically design better fitness landscapes for genetic programming search than the manually designed ones. We optimize the landscapes by optimizing the neighborhood structures of symbolic solutions. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in both supervised learning and combinatorial optimization problems. The results show that the proposed method significantly reduces the hardness of fitness landscapes. By simply searching against the automatically optimized fitness landscapes, a genetic programming method can have a very competitive performance with state-of-the-art methods. © 1997-2012 IEEE.
