Self-configuration refers to a node's ability to dynamically adjust resource allocation based on changing network conditions, either autonomously or with minimal human input. Alongside this, self-optimization is aimed at maintaining optimal network performance despite fluctuating conditions. Protocols like MRL-SCSO, designed for Unattended Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs), ensure robust coverage, connectivity, and energy efficiency under varying loads. MRL-SCSO employs learning-based mechanisms, such as Reinforcing Multiple Agents, incorporating features like boundary construction, state scheduling, topology control, and data dissemination to enhance network management. When compared to the Collect Tree Protocol (CTP), MRL-SCSO exhibits faster packet transmission due to backbone nodes and traffic load prediction, reducing delays by 2–5 ms, which is a significant improvement over existing algorithms. Additionally, MRL-SCSO delivers a better packet delivery ratio, dropping only by 5–12% with shorter data transmission intervals, while CTP experiences a 20–40% drop when all nodes are active. Furthermore, MRL-SCSO improves throughput by 20–30 kb/s compared to CTP, demonstrating its superior ability to optimize network performance without sacrificing reliability. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Unattended Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) operate without human supervision and have limited resources. In a conventional WSN with a fixed sink for data collection, nodes one hop away from the sink consume more energy, causing a hotspot issue. This leads to network fragmentation and reduced sensing efficiency. To address this, a mobile sink is proposed. This study details the development and implementation of Secure MRL, focusing on legitimate message communication to the mobile sink via convex nodes. By using these convex nodes as data collection points, the mobile sink avoids traversing the entire network. We employ an enhanced system to generate keys and authenticate messages, assessing its resilience against various attacks, including sleep deprivation, snooze, network substitution, and modification. Findings indicate that Secure MRL maintains consistent performance across different node counts and significantly reduces energy consumption by 84%, improving the speed of attack detection. This improvement is achieved by monitoring the digital signature and residual energy of nodes. The proposed SVM-based network training establishes a residual energy cut-off, while convex nodes mitigate synchronization issues among other sensor nodes in Secure MRL. Additionally, convex nodes manage the availability checks for the mobile sink. The proposed approach demonstrates a 92% improvement in packet delivery ratio (PDR) and an 89% reduction in end-to-end delay, highlighting its efficacy in enhancing network performance. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

DRL-Enabled Computation Offloading for AIGC Services in IIoT-Assisted Edge Computing Networks

The widespread application of AI-generated content (AIGC) services has driven demand for efficient computational resources, making effective task scheduling and computation offloading in edge computing (EC) environments a critical research topic. However, the high computational requirements and low latency demands of AIGC services, combined with the limitations of EC, present challenges for existing offloading methods, such as unstable decision making in dynamic task environments and resource overloading. Here, we propose a decentralized AIGC task offloading architecture within an IoT-assisted EC network to optimize the quality of AIGC services. In this architecture, we define a multiobjective joint optimization problem for AIGC task offloading, aiming to simultaneously optimize key performance metrics, such as task latency, energy efficiency, and load balancing. To address this problem, we introduce an improved proximal policy optimization (PPO)-based deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm, named TOPPO. By incorporating a policy update step size constraint and a clipping mechanism, TOPPO significantly enhances the stability of the training process and reduces fluctuations during policy updates. Additionally, the algorithm integrates an LSTM model to improve its ability to handle temporal dependencies. Through continuous interaction between the model and the environment, the offloading strategy is iteratively updated to ensure that diverse AIGC tasks are efficiently executed on IoT devices or edge servers. Extensive simulations and performance evaluations demonstrate that the proposed method achieves significant improvements in task latency, energy consumption, and load management during AIGC task processing. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper presents a comprehensive dataset of Swahili verb conjugations, designed to overcome the linguistic challenges posed by Swahili's agglutinative morphology. This morphological complexity has hindered Natural Language Processing (NLP) models from effectively processing Swahili, currently a low-resource language. The dataset encompasses over 319,156 verb forms, spanning five tenses, three grammatical persons, and both singular and plural forms. This resource supports key tasks such as tokenization, lemmatization, and morphological analysis. By capturing the intricate verb structures of Swahili, the dataset aims to enhance model performance and enable the development of more accurate NLP tools for Swahili. Additionally, it offers broader implications for processing other agglutinative languages within the Bantu family. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

On Strong Secrecy for Multiple Access Channels With States and Causal CSI

Strong secrecy communication over a discrete memoryless state-dependent multiple access channel (SD-MAC) with an external eavesdropper is investigated. The channel is governed by discrete memoryless and i.i.d. channel states, and the channel state information (CSI) is revealed to the encoders in a causal manner. The main results of this paper are inner and outer bounds of the capacity region, for which we investigate coding schemes incorporating wiretap coding and secret key agreements between the sender and the legitimate receiver. Two kinds of block Markov coding schemes are proposed. The first is a new coding scheme that uses backward decoding and the Wyner-Ziv coding, and the secret key is constructed from a lossy description of the CSI. The other is an extended version of an existing coding scheme for point-to-point wiretap channels with causal CSI. A numerical example shows that the achievable region given by the first coding scheme can be strictly larger than the second one. However, these two schemes do not outperform each other in general, and there exist some numerical examples in which each coding scheme achieves some rate pairs that cannot be achieved by another scheme. Our established inner bound reduces to some best-known results in the literature as special cases. We further investigate some capacity-achieving cases for state-dependent multiple access wiretap channels (SD-MAWCs) with degraded message sets. It turns out that the two coding schemes are both optimal in these cases. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

A numerical study on the interaction of electromagnetic waves with photonic crystals with one-dimensional periodicity has been carried out using the Finite Volume method. The photonic crystals with one-dimensional periodicity consists of 7 alternating layers of and with thicknesses of and, respectively. Electromagnetic field components have been simulated to propagate through the photonic crystal structure, experiencing reflection and transmission at each layer of the structure. The simulation results show the occurrence of absorption precisely at the Bragg frequency by the photonic crystal, which is referred to as the photonic band gap (PBG). A comparison of the simulation results has been conducted using different fluxes, such as the Lax-Friedrichs and upwind schemes, under PBG conditions. The results show smoother absorption using the Lax-Friedrichs scheme. Additionally, the use of a single-layer graphene on the front side of the photonic crystal has shown more perfect absorption compared to without the single-layer graphene. Therefore, the integrated graphene-photonic crystal system can be used as a perfect reflector. The simulation runs well using effective absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) to reduce wave reflections at the edges of the computational window. Based on the simulation results, the Finite Volume method has been proven to be a powerful tool in describing electromagnetic wave propagation through photonic crystal systems with or without graphene. These findings provide a foundational model for fabrication approaches and holds potential for future advancements in sensor technologies, moreover two-dimensional and three-dimensional structures. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing. This study presents an overview on intelligent reflecting surface(IRS)-enabled sensing and communication for the forthcoming sixth-generation(6G) wireless networks, in which IRSs are strategically deployed to proactively reconfigure wireless environments to improve both sensing and communication(S&C) performance. First, we exploit a single IRS to enable wireless sensing in the base station's(BS's) non-line-of-sight(NLoS) area. In particular, we present three IRS-enabled NLoS target sensing architectures with fully-passive, semi-passive, and active IRSs, respectively. We compare their pros and cons by analyzing the fundamental sensing performance limits for target detection and parameter estimation. Next, we consider a single IRS to facilitate integrated sensing and communication(ISAC), in which the transmit signals at the BS are used for achieving both S&C functionalities, aided by the IRS through reflective beamforming. We present joint transmit signal and receiver processing designs for realizing efficient ISAC, and jointly optimize the transmit beamforming at the BS and reflective beamforming at the IRS to balance the fundamental performance tradeoff between S&C. Furthermore, we discuss multi-IRS networked ISAC, by particularly focusing on multi-IRS-enabled multi-link ISAC, multi-region ISAC, and ISAC signal routing, respectively. Finally, we highlight various promising research topics in this area to motivate future work.

Network topology planning is an essential multi-phase process to build and jointly optimize the multi-layer network topologies in wide-area networks (WANs). Most existing practices target single-phase/layer planning, and are incapable of satisfying all rigorous topological structure constraints (e.g., dual-homing rings) defined by network standards and operators, especially in large-scale networks. These significantly limit their usability and performance in production networks. We consider a general topology planning problem with typical structure constraints over three essential phases (greenfield, reconfiguration, and site expansion) and topological layers (optical, IP, and routing topologies). We present, T3Planner, a novel practical solver to this problem in production. Specifically, we develop a structure-driven encoder based on graph neural network (GNN) for concise structure encoding, and design a new learning framework with optical-centric layer compression/reconstruction and rule-aided reinforcement learning (RL) for fast convergence and high performance. Extensive experiments on nine real topologies demonstrate that T3Planner scales to large optical networks with hundreds of sites, saves 46.6% cost, and supports 3.12x more demand when compared to related existing approaches. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

The changing climate is anticipated to result in more frequent and extended heat waves having catastrophic effects on urban areas. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat is believed to adversely affect both physiological and psychological well-being, particularly for outdoor workers. This study analyzed the effects of hot weather conditions on the brainwaves of rickshaw pullers by examining changes in EEG signals before and after driving rickshaws at different air temperatures and relative humidity levels. We selected six rickshaw pullers as participants for six levels of air temperature (°C) and humidity condition (%) in various outdoor areas in Dhaka city, Bangladesh, while driving rickshaws for a duration of 20 to 30 minutes. The acquired EEG data assists in assessing the effects of heat exposure on cerebral activity. Our statistical analysis shows that there is a positive association between heat stress and the alpha band power of brainwaves. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
