Conformal prediction is an emerging technique for uncertainty quantification that constructs prediction sets guaranteed to contain the true label with a predefined probability. Recent work develops online conformal prediction methods that adaptively construct prediction sets to accommodate distribution shifts. However, existing algorithms typically assume perfect label accuracy which rarely holds in practice. In this work, we investigate the robustness of online conformal prediction under uniform label noise with a known noise rate, in both constant and dynamic learning rate schedules. We show that label noise causes a persistent gap between the actual mis-coverage rate and the desired rate α, leading to either overestimated or underestimated coverage guarantees. To address this issue, we propose Noise Robust Online Conformal Prediction (dubbed NR-OCP) by updating the threshold with a novel robust pinball loss, which provides an unbiased estimate of clean pinball loss without requiring ground-truth labels. Our theoretical analysis shows that NR-OCP eliminates the coverage gap in both constant and dynamic learning rate schedules, achieving a convergence rate of O(T−1/2) for both empirical and expected coverage errors under uniform label noise. With the increasing water shortage and climatic uncertainty, creative strategies for effective water management in agriculture are necessary. This research investigates the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), with solar-powered Internet of Things (IoT) networks to enhance water utilization in agricultural activities. The proposed system facilitates accurate irrigation scheduling using real-time data from soil moisture sensors, meteorological stations, and crop health monitoring devices. The ANN model analyses this data to predict ideal irrigation schedules and volumes, minimizing water waste while improving crop yields. The solar-powered IoT framework provides sustainability and reduces dependence on traditional energy sources. Field trials indicate that the AI-enhanced system may promote water saving by as much as 30% relative to traditional irrigation techniques. Moreover, using AI enables adaptive learning, enabling the system to enhance its irrigation tactics using historical and real-time data. This novel method conserves water resources and fosters sustainable agriculture practices, coinciding with global initiatives to address water shortages and assure food security. The findings underscore the potential of technology-based solutions to revolutionize agricultural water management for a sustainable future. © 2025 IEEE.

Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) are poised to lead the next generation of artificial intelligence, offering energy efficiency and performance on par with traditional neural networks. With these advantages, SNNs are finding widespread applications across various domains. One significant area of interest is image generation using deep learning models like Variational Autoencoders (VAE). However, like other deep learning models, SNNs demand substantial training data to achieve desired outcomes, raising concerns about data privacy. Our pioneering contribution is the introduction of a Differentially Private Spiking Variational Autoencoder (DP-SVAE) for image generation and reconstruction. DP-SVAE employs standard Differentially Private Stochastic Gradient Descent (DP-SGD) to ensure privacy preservation. Additionally, we have evaluated the models against various adversarial attacks to highlight the importance of differential privacy. We comprehensively analyze the proposed model through extensive experimentation across publicly available benchmark datasets. This pioneering study marks the first exploration of privacy considerations in SNN-based VAEs and will catalyze further research in this domain. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The rate at which the world is evolving is astonishing with cutting-edge technologies being introduced every day. There have been developments in every field ranging from constructing gigantic architectures to enhancing the ease and comfort with which we can commute daily. Nevertheless, this has given rise to different types of pollution, sound pollution being one of them. Although the impact of sound pollution is not instantaneously noticed, it has a distinct effect on humans and nature which is observed over a period of time. There are multiple sources that cause sound pollution. Sounds from ongoing construction sites are one of them. Such sounds disrupt the daily lifestyle of people, their health, and daily productivity. Mostly, these sounds start very early in the day thereby making it difficult for people to manually take precautions like shutting doors and windows or deploying mobile soundproofing solutions. Machine learning has advanced significantly over the years leading to the refinement of artificial intelligence. This has aided in the development of multifarious solutions to ease and simplify our daily lifestyle. This sets the stage for an autonomous system, that can detect sounds from construction sites very early to automatically deploy precautionary measures so that the effect of these sounds on close by residents can be minimized. In this paper, a system is presented that models audio clips using MFCC-based features for the identification of sounds from construction sites in the Urban environment. Experiments were performed on a dataset of over 6K clips composed of the varied construction sounds as well as ambient urban sounds and a maximum accuracy of 98.02% was achieved using random forest-based classification. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are decentralized networks of spatially distributed sensors that gather and monitor environmental information for various applications, including industrial automation and environmental monitoring. This enables real-time information gathering without relying upon wired connections. In WSN, clustering and routing are essential techniques for improving data transmission. Clustering comprises grouping sensor nodes (SN) into clusters to optimize energy efficacy and extend the network's lifetime. However, selecting suitable and efficient cluster head (CH) components is crucial to harness their benefits. Selecting appropriate CHs and finding optimum coefficients for all the parameters of applicable fitness function (FF) in CH selection is a non-deterministic polynomial-time (NP-hard) problem that needs additional processing. In contrast, routing focuses on defining the most effective path for data to traverse through the network, ensuring timely and reliable data delivery and reducing energy consumption. Therefore, this study proposes a new Metaheuristic-Based Dual Cluster Head Selection with Routing Protocol (MBDCHS-RP) method for energy-efficient WSNs. The MBDCHS-RP method aims to cluster the nodes and select optimum routes for transmitting information in the WSN. To achieve this, the MBDCHS-RP method follows a two-stage clustering process, including tentative CH (TCH) and final CH (FCH) selection. The MBDCHS-RP technique utilizes a cheetah optimization algorithm (COA) with FF comprising residual energy (RE) and average node distance as input parameters for the TCH selection process. In addition, the flower pollination algorithm (FPA) is used to select final CHs with multiple input parameters, namely average intra-cluster distance, RE, and average sink distance. With advancements in artificial intelligence, it is natural for the health industry to focus on IOT devices. AI could promote a paradigm shift in how doctors and patients interact through immediate updates, predictive features, and remote access. The focus of this study is the outreach and employment aspects revolving around AI-enabled health care, with special attention to mHealth solutions. We searched through published data and came across 112 relevant studies identifying keywords such as accessibility, empowerment, and workforce. One of the most interesting findings was the fact that AI targeting mobile applications has the possibility of increasing access to health services by approximately 60 percent for rural areas, as well as increasing the patient cooperative rate by approximately 45%, where a predictive health tracking device has been utilized. We proposed two new measures: the Physical Activity and Nutrition Index (PANI) and Health Status Index (HSI), allowing for better diabetes risk predictions with a 0.82 AUC-ROC and better generalizability than traditional baselines, with an improvement of 12%. When identifying the best available ML models, including Logistic Regression, Random Forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, and Bayesian Neural Networks, we found that the hybrid Random Forest + Linear SVC model had the best performance with recall and accuracy of 0.77 and 0.72, respectively. The ability of the model to demonstrate both interpretability and specificity was evident. It was also observed that synthetic data augmentation (SMOTE) increased the recall for minority class predictions by 18% but did not reduce specificity. © 2025 IEEE.

Appropriate selection of search operators plays a critical role in meta-heuristic algorithm design. Adaptive selection of suitable operators to the characteristics of different optimization stages is an important task that owns promising potential to improve the performance of a meta-heuristic algorithm. A variety of adaptive operator selection methods have been proposed in last decades, from the machine learning and optimization communities. However, the existing studies have not been systematically reviewed so far. To fill the gap, this paper provides a comprehensive survey of adaptive operator selection for meta-heuristics. According to the information required for selection, adaptive operator selection methods are classified into two categories: (i) stateless methods and (ii) state-based methods. Each category is further summarized into several key components. The strategies of each component belonging to the two categories are reviewed respectively. The motivation, strengths and weaknesses of the proposed strategies are also discussed. Furthermore, studied meta-heuristics and optimization problems in the literature are summarized. The effects from the difference of meta-heuristics and problems to the specific design of methods are discussed, together with the guidance of selecting the suitable method in different application scenarios. At the end, emerging challenges that could guide further research are discussed. © 2020 IEEE.

Modified simulated annealing for university teacher course assignment considering socio-cultural constraints

This paper aims to address the complex challenge of course assignment for faculty members within a Saudi university, taking into account the socio-cultural constraints imposed by gender-based segregation between students and faculty. To tackle this challenge, a combinatorial optimization model is proposed, which includes a binary representation of the problem, constraints reflecting gender segregation, and an objective function designed to maximize faculty satisfaction. The model employs a Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm, supplemented with two neighborhood search heuristics (H1 and H2), to explore diverse combinations. Additionally, a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) algorithm is implemented for comparative analysis, utilizing heuristic 1 for local search. Through the application of simulated annealing alongside both heuristics (SA_H1_H2), the optimal solution is achieved, resulting in a notable equilibrium of courses among faculty members. Objective 1 demonstrates the standardized deviation in workload distribution among faculty members, yielding a deviation value of 0.08. This study contributes to the field by proposing a novel approach to course assignment that explicitly addresses the gender-based segregation prevalent in Saudi universities. By integrating socio-cultural constraints into the optimization model and employing advanced algorithms, the study offers a pioneering solution to a previously unexplored problem domain. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2024.

Navigation services enable users to find the shortest path from a starting point S to a destination D, reducing time, gas, and traffic congestion. Still, navigation users risk the exposure of their sensitive location data. Our motivation arises from how users can accurately, securely, and efficiently navigate from S to Dwhile passing through k unordered stops, i.e., midway locations with a non-fixed visiting order. In this work, we formally define Semi-Constrained Navigation (SCN) and present a novel scheme Hermestoachieveaccurate,secure, andefficient SCN. Specifically, weproposeadivide-and-conquerapproachtostrikeagoodbalance betweenaccuracyandefficiency. It recursively depth-first-searches the whole area (a navigation tree) and invokes five carefully-crafted strategies stop-by-stop to compute three subpaths in three se quential subareas. We construct a path-distance oracle to encrypt the road graph and securely implement the strategies by using homomorphic encryption and garble circuits. We formally prove the security in the random oracle model and analyze the search complexity to be less than O(k2). We experiment over a real-world city map and compare with six baselines. Results show that path search with k = 4 among N = 1000 intersections requires 5.58 seconds with a 3.2% distance deviation rate and an 82.5% path similarity. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Writing arguments is a challenging task for both humans and machines. It entails incorporating high-level beliefs from various perspectives on the topic, along with deliberate reasoning and planning to construct a coherent narrative. Current language models often generate outputs autoregressively, lacking explicit integration of these underlying controls, resulting in limited output diversity and coherence. In this work, we propose a persona-based multi-agent framework for argument writing. Inspired by the human debate, we first assign each agent a persona representing its high-level beliefs from a unique perspective, and then design an agent interaction process so that the agents can collaboratively debate and discuss the idea to form an overall plan for argument writing. Such debate process enables fluid and nonlinear development of ideas. We evaluate our framework on argumentative essay writing. The results show that our framework generates more diverse and persuasive arguments by both automatic and human evaluations. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.
