Yakshagana, a traditional theater form from Karnataka, India, features a unique combination of vibrant costumes, dynamic dance movements, and elaborate facial makeup, making character and actor identification a challenging task for automated systems. This research work presents a novel approach to classify Yakshagana characters into two primary categories, Vaishnava and Shaiva, and to identify the actors performing these characters using advanced machine learning techniques. Our research employs a Cyclic Gated Recurrent Neural Network (Cyclic GRNN) for classification and identification tasks. For character category classification, we integrate YOLOv3 and Faster R-CNN models, achieving an accuracy of 92.85% with YOLOv3 and 88.285% with Faster R-CNN. The categorization is specifically focused on distinguishing between Vaishnava and Shaiva characters. Additionally, for actor name identification, we utilize a RESNET-50 model, attaining a high accuracy of 95.60%. The results demonstrate the efficacy of Cyclic GRNN combined with state-of-the-art object detection and image classification models in accurately recognizing and categorizing Yakshagana characters and actors. This research contributes to the preservation and digital documentation of Yakshagana by providing robust tools for automated identification, thereby facilitating cultural heritage studies and enhancing audience engagement with this traditional art form. © 2024 IEEE.

Coffee beans are one of the high-value commodities in Indonesia, but the sorting method for the quality of coffee beans still uses visual methods and sieves with mechanical machines. This study aims to provide an alternative to classifying coffee beans using Deep Learning algorithms, such as the ResNet-18 and MobileNetV2. The dataset used is USK-COFFEE which consists of two classes, the normal coffee bean class, and the defect coffee bean class. The models were trained using the balanced and imbalanced datasets, meaning that two scenarios were performed. From the results of this study, the accuracy value for the ResNet-18 model was 91.50% when trained on the balanced dataset and 90.87% on the imbalanced dataset. It outperformed the MobileNetV2 architecture, which only achieved 0.8125 and 0.8112 accuracy scores when trained on the balanced and imbalanced datasets, respectively. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Traditional centralized database systems share many weaknesses, including the overhead of sharing medical documentation, data fragmentation, and susceptibility to centralized data attacks. Those problems would especially influence rare disease patient communities given their higher need for medical data interoperability and security. In this paper, we present an alternative approach to managing healthcare data that is tailored to the rare disease community. Specifically, we design and implement HealthBridge, a decentralized and interoperable mobile application with distributed ledger technology. The underlying permissioned network utilizes Hyperledger Fabric and has a modular design, empowering efficient data transactions directly between trusted entities with predefined smart contracts that regulate access permissions. For the application design, we focus on the needs of the rare disease community, prioritizing ease of use without compromising data security. In particular, our application provides a delegate feature, aimed at supporting rare disease patients with additional needs. Through this feature, if needed, patients can grant pre-defined access permissions to delegates through smart contracts. While the overall implementation of HealthBridge is still in the developmental stages, it presents a proof of concept and a promising system to support the underfunded rare disease community in terms of healthcare interoperability through a permissioned blockchain network. © 2023 IEEE.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are mental disorders that reduce quality of life. As they are challenging to detect in a timely manner, recent studies explore the mental illness screening potential of language models on modalities such as transcripts. Such datasets suffer from a limited number of participants. To overcome these challenges, we take a two-pronged approach: (1) we leverage multi-task learning to model multiple illnesses concurrently namely MDD and PTSD screening, and (2) we plug in pre-trained language models as a backbone, namely, Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) variants - which are capable of learning the linguistic content of clinical interview transcripts. In particular, we experiment with three multi-task weighting strategies and five BERT variants, applying them to 15 transcript sets extracted from the Distress Analysis Interview Corpus. Our results indicate that leveraging multi-task learning, especially with meta-weighting, increases the screening performance compared to single-task learning. Our multi-task learning model strategies improved the F1 scores for all 15 datasets for both MDD and PTSD screening. Notably, multitask learning improved MDD screening ability by 20 percent with transcripts regarding 'regret' and achieved F1 of 0.89 and 0.82 respectively for MDD and PTSD screening with transcripts regarding 'medical history'. Our findings may help researchers develop more effective mental illness screening models. © 2024 IEEE.

Patients and healthcare providers often face challenges when dealing with creating, reading, updating, sharing, and deleting operations on individual healthcare data due to incompatible electronic medical record systems and the inability to provide necessary data. These challenges can drastically prolong both a patient's diagnosis time and the time until the operation. There are many informational discrepancies when attempting to provide adequate healthcare background - especially with new providers when a full healthcare history is required. To aid in increasing interoperability, we propose a decentralized data-sharing approach. While current centralized solutions own patients' healthcare data, we seek to put data back in the hands of the patients using blockchain as a decentralized database. In essence, our data-sharing architecture and set of rules leverage a permissioned blockchain network, Hyperledger Fabric, to give each patient on the network the ability to own and control the flow of their healthcare data. © 2023 IEEE.

Heart disease is also called a common one of global health concerns. A lot of research has been done before to predict someone whether has a heart disease or not by machine learning. In this study, we use five machine learning techniques as comparison which machine learning technique has a most accuracy to recognize heart disease in someone's condition. In this case, we are using UCI Cleveland dataset as a sample and the result shows that the Support Vector Machine and K-Nearest Neighbor gives the most accuracy which is 85% along with many aspects respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

The Smart Power Grid (SPG) is pivotal in orchestrating and managing demand response in contemporary smart cities, leveraging the prowess of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Within the immersive SPG environment, the ubiquitous deployment of smart meters stands as a testament to their paramount importance in the realm of vigilant monitoring and oversight. These smart meters are installed on high-tension electricity lines and transmit information about electricity outages and other issues to the utility center. To access services from utility centers, smart meters need to communicate securely over a public channel, even though the network itself is insecure. However, potential attacks from adversaries ( Ad) can exploit this communication. Therefore, protecting this communication is of utmost importance. Several privacy-preserving authentication protocols designed for SPG have been introduced in the literature. Nevertheless, a significant number of these protocols exhibit vulnerabilities to diverse security attacks. This article introduces a lightweight and anonymous authentication protocol specifically designed to address these concerns in the SPG environment. Our protocol ensures both security and efficiency, surpassing other comparable protocols in terms of its lightweight nature. By employing both formal and informal analysis, we showcase the robustness of our protocol against significant attacks while remaining lightweight. The proposed protocol provides added security features and incurs 23.8879% lower computation cost than related protocols. Consequently, our protocol is highly suitable for implementation in the SPG system. © 2020 IEEE.

Distributionally robust reinforcement learning (DRRL), often framed as a robust Markov decision process (RMDP), seeks to find a robust policy that achieves good performance under the worst-case scenario among all environments within a prespecified uncertainty set centered around the training environment. Unlike previous work, which relies on a generative model or a pre-collected offline dataset enjoying good coverage of the deployment environment, we tackle robust RL via interactive data collection, where the learner interacts with the training environment only and refines the policy through trial and error. In this robust RL paradigm, two main challenges emerge: managing the distributional robustness while striking a balance between exploration and exploitation during data collection. Initially, we establish that sample-efficient learning without additional assumptions is unattainable owing to the curse of support shift;i.e., the potential disjointedness of the distributional supports between training and testing environments. To circumvent such a hardness result, we introduce the vanishing minimal value assumption to RMDPs with a total-variation distance robust set, postulating that the minimal value of the optimal robust value function is zero. Such an assumption effectively eliminates the support shift issue for RMDPs with a TV distance robust set, and we present an algorithm with a provable sample complexity guarantee. Our work makes the initial step to uncovering the inherent difficulty of robust RL via interactive data collection and sufficient conditions for sample-efficient algorithms with sharp sample complexity. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. Enhancing intrusion detection in IIoT: optimized CNN model with multi-class SMOTE balancing

This work introduces an intrusion detection system (IDS) tailored for industrial internet of things (IIoT) environments based on an optimized convolutional neural network (CNN) model. The model is trained on a dataset that was balanced using a novel multi-class implementation of synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) that ensures equal representation of all classes. Additionally, systematic optimization will be used to fine tune the hyperparameters of the CNN model and mitigate the effects of the increased size of the training dataset. Evaluation results will demonstrate substantial improvement in performance when the optimized CNN model is trained on the balanced dataset. The proposed IDS will be evaluated using the IIoT-specific WUSTL-IIOT-2021 dataset, and then its generalization capability will be verified using the non-domain specific UNSW_NB15 dataset. The model’s performance will be evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics. The results will demonstrate that the proposed IDS is highly effective with performance exceeding 99.9% on all performance metrics. The IDS is also highly effective in detecting intrusion for generic IT networks achieving improvements in excess of 30% compared to the default baseline model. The results emphasize the versatility and effectiveness of the proposed IDS model, making it a reliable and adaptable solution for enhancing network security across diverse network environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.
