This research investigates the novel application of Dynamic Game Balancing (DGB) techniques in the context of a hybrid chess-survival roguelike game, a unique combination of genres not widely explored in previous studies. The study addresses two primary research questions: the identification of suitable DGB techniques for these genres and the enhancement of user experience through DGB. A game prototype was developed using Unity, where players control a chess knight in a turn-based system, facing increasingly challenging enemy pieces. The DGB system dynamically adjusts the game's difficulty based on player performance, utilizing various inputs such as damage received or dealt, health points, powerup usage, and decision speed. Preliminary results from 14 beta-testers show overall positive feedback, with players reporting higher engagement and enjoyment due to the seamless difficulty adjustments, as reflected by the high mean scores from surveys like the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ). This research fills a gap in the literature by demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of integrating DGB in a chess-survival roguelike setting. These findings highlight the potential for DGB to significantly improve player experience in hybrid game genres, suggesting that its application can create more adaptive and immersive gaming environments in various other genres as well. © 2025 IEEE.

Enabling high fault-tolerant embedding capability of alternating group graphs

The Hamiltonian path/cycle serves as a robust tool for transmitting messages within parallel and distributed systems. However, the prevalent device-intensive nature of these systems often leads to the occurrence of faults. Tackling the critical challenge of tolerating numerous faults when constructing Hamiltonian paths and cycles in these systems is of utmost significance. The alternating group graph AGn is a suitable interconnection network for building parallel and distributed systems due to its outstanding topological properties. Many studies have been dedicated to the fault-tolerant embedding of Hamiltonian paths and cycles in AGn, but they all fail to reach the desired level of fault-tolerance. In this paper, we aim to enhance the edge fault-tolerant embedding capability of AGn by leveraging a newly emerged fault model, called the Partitioned Edge Fault (PEF) model. We prove the existence of Hamiltonian paths/cycles tolerating large-scale edge faults in AGn under the PEF model. Additionally, we propose a fault-tolerant Hamiltonian path embedding algorithm for AGn under the PEF model and validate its effectiveness through experiments. To gauge the significance of each missed edge, we conduct experimental calculations for the average path length of every edge along the Hamiltonian path produced by the proposed embedding algorithm. Furthermore, the fault-tolerance comparison and experimental analysis reveal that our results improve the fault-tolerant embedding capability of AGn from a linear level to an exponential one. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a Hamiltonian path/cycle embedding approach is proposed and actually implemented for AGn with large-scale edge faults. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

This exponential proliferation of IoT devices is creating an ever-growing demand for efficient cybersecurity solutions in resource-constrained environments. In this study, we propose Edge-IoTDistilBERT, a fine-tuned DistilBERT model, intended for the multi-class classification of network packet attacks within IoT ecosystems. Our proposed model was trained on the Edge-IIoT dataset, representative of all traffic classes and attack variants with high accuracy of up to 99.99%, outperforming state-of-the-art solutions. The new preprocessing pipeline of PCAP to text would transform the network traffic to a textual form allowing the model to learn the pattern in the dataset and making it able to generalize its content. Our fine-tuned model show a robust result on imbalanced dataset with two diffrent splits namely 80-20 and 70-30. The result shown by Edge-IoTDistilBERT place this model as a feasible effective cybersecurity solution for IoT networks, offering a good trade-off between high performance and resource constraints linked to edge devices. © 2025 IEEE.

Drones are flying objects that may be controlled remotely or programmed to do a wide range of tasks, including aerial photography, videography, surveys, crop and animal monitoring, search and rescue missions, package delivery, and military operations. Unrestrained use, however, can pose a significant threat to safety, privacy, and security through eavesdropping, flying close to prohibited locations, interfering with public events, and delivering illicit items. Hence, real-time drone detection and tracking are indispensable and appropriate measures. This study developed real-time drone detection and tracking using the most efficient deep-learning approaches. The models were fine-tuned first to suit the required purpose and yield the desired outcome. The performance of the developed system was better than that of earlier endeavors in terms of accuracy and loss. Of the seven fined-tuned models, the Xception model constantly rendered the maximum accuracy with negligible loss. The model outperformed other state-of-the-art architectures, exhibiting an accuracy and loss of 99.18% and 3.83, respectively. When processing datasets in diabetes classification, common problems included a large number of missing values, outliers, and dataset imbalance. To deal with those issues, this study analyzed 18 studies on diabetes classification with machine learning algorithms over the past 5 years. This revealed the important role of data pre-processing in creating effective classification models, as it was found that by using different data pre-processing techniques, the same model can provide different performance. The study identified K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and support vector machine (SVM) as superior methods for filling in missing values, achieving an accuracy of 98.49% and 94.89%, respectively. These approaches outperformed traditional methods such as median or mean replacement. However, the challenge of imbalanced data sets remains in all studies reviewed. The common evaluation metrics used to evaluate the created models in previous studies included accuracy, precision, specificity, sensitivity/recall, and F1 Score. Overall, this review showed that the role of data pre-processing is no less important than algorithm selection to improve the performance of machine learning models in diabetes classification. © 2024 The Authors.

Deep learning framework for automatic detection and classification of sleep apnea severity from polysomnography signals

Sleep apnea (SA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by breathing pauses during sleep. A person’s sleep schedule is significantly influenced by that person’s hectic lifestyle, which may include unhealthy eating habits and their line of work. Polysomnographic (PSG) sleep studies examine sleep-related disorders by recording various biosignals from the human body. However, SA classification methods could be more robust in terms of performance because they rely on feature-engineering strategies or employ a particular signal from PSG recording for diagnosis. This study aims to classify the severity of SA according to the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) into normal, mild, and moderate-to-severe groups using oxygen saturation (SpO2), electroencephalogram (EEG), and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The proposed deep neural network (DNN)-bidirectional long short-term memory (DNN-BiLSTM) framework addresses the issue of low detection accuracy in analysis. The DNN-BiLSTM approach employs features extracted from a multiscale dilation attention 1D convolutional neural network (MSDA-1DCNN) as input for detection and classification purposes. The MSDA-1DCNN network extracts deep features from processed SpO2, EEG, and ECG signals. The developed firefly combined electric fish optimization (FCEFO) algorithm improves performance by optimizing the hidden neuron count of the DNN and the learning rate of the BiLSTM framework. The performance measures proved the effectiveness of the model over conventional machine and deep learning approaches. With the integration of deep features, the proposed DNN-BiLSTM model provides enhanced performance in terms of accuracy and precision. Modernization and intense industrialization have led to a substantial improvement in people’s quality of life. However, the aspiration for achieving an improved quality of life results in environmental contamination. A primary consequence of environmental degradation is air pollution, resulting from rising levels of poisonous chemicals in the atmosphere, which may induce detrimental health conditions in humans. It is harmful to both humans and agriculture. Given that the effects of air pollution on plants may not be readily apparent, it is important to analyse the necessary data and compute the outcomes. Farmers prioritise on pests and plant diseases, frequently neglecting the detrimental impacts of air pollution. Some plant species can withstand high amounts of pollution from suspended particulate matter and accumulated gases, while others are more susceptible to harm. Therefore, plants’ reaction to air pollution is influenced by the kind of harmful compounds, their levels, and the plant’s susceptibility to them. The LSTM +CNN Proposed Ensemble method may be used to analyse the impact of air pollution on agriculture by examining trends in crop production over time and predicting which crop is more resistant based on the pollution data. The initiative created for this aim may assist farmers in determining the most suitable crop to cultivate in their fields to minimize the impact of air pollution on agricultural yield. The findings show deep learning algorithms correctly predict hourly pollutant concentrations such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ground-level ozone, and particulate matter 2.5, along with the hourly Air Quality Index (AQI) for California. A proposed model used test RMSE values as a measure to evaluate prediction performance, achieving the best possible results. © 2025 SCPE.

This systematic review gave special attention to diabetes and the advancements in food and nutrition needed to prevent or manage diabetes in all its forms. There are two main forms of diabetes mellitus: Type 1 (T1D) and Type 2 (T2D). The loss of beta cells brought on by an autoimmune reaction causes the pancreas to be unable to produce enough insulin, which leads to Type 1 diabetes. A deficiency of insulin could arise as the illness worsens. The most frequent cause is a combination of excessive body weight and inadequate exercise. Currently, 90–95% of patients have Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Age-specific normal blood sugar ranges exist and knowing them is crucial for determining a target blood sugar level that is both healthy and appropriate. The main takeaway is that diet regimens ought to be tailored to the patient’s requirements and should account for their capacity for change. Carbohydrates are the nutrients that have the biggest impact on the rise in blood glucose. In this paper, we have proposed a novel method for glucose monitoring and diet recommendations for diabetic patients using fog computing. A paradigm known as fog computing makes use of the benefits that come from using both cloud and edge devices to support modern computing systems by offering high-quality services, cutting latency, facilitating mobility, supporting multi-tenancy, and many other features. © 2025 by Begell House, Inc.
