The implementation of Artificial Intelligence in the aerospace field is fairly new and various domains of the aerospace discipline are to be explored. This paper provides a general review on the upbringing and improvements of Artificial Intelligence as a pilar of the next generation of scientific research. Applications and developments brought by Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning to the aerospace industry generally, mainly the prediction of aerodynamic coefficients and design optimization using intricate neural networks replicating the process of the human brain. Scientific developments participated in improving major areas in the aerospace field. Due to the expensive and time-consuming process related to the complexity of the geometry and the precision of the results required, researchers integrated surrogate models based on Deep Learning in order to improve the calculation process of the aerodynamic coefficients. On one hand, this paper introduces and discusses the general architecture of several networks used to enhance the calculation ability of the machine, while presenting the process of each work along with recounting the different methods employed. On the other hand, a discussion regarding the challenges presented with utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics while assessing and comparing the results brought by surrogate models based on efficiency and time consumption is also tackled. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Federated learning (FL) and split learning (SL) are prevailing distributed paradigms in recent years. They both enable shared global model training while keeping data localized on users’ devices. The former excels in parallel execution capabilities, while the latter enjoys low dependence on edge computing resources and strong privacy protection. Split federated learning (SFL) combines the strengths of both FL and SL, making it one of the most popular distributed architectures. Furthermore, a recent study has claimed that SFL exhibits robustness against poisoning attacks, with a fivefold improvement compared to FL in terms of *** this paper, we present a novel poisoning attack known as $\color{Fuchsia} {{\text{MISA}}}$. It poisons both the top and bottom models, causing a misalignment in the global model, ultimately leading to a drastic accuracy collapse. This attack unveils the vulnerabilities in SFL, challenging the conventional belief that SFL is robust against poisoning attacks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed MISA poses a significant threat to the availability of SFL, underscoring the imperative for academia and industry to accord this matter due attention.

Momentum-Based Distributed Economic Dispatch of Smart Grids in Time-Varying Directed Networks

In this paper, we investigate the economic dispatch problem of smart grids in time-varying directed networks. The EDP essentially revolves around optimizing the distribution of generation power amongst multiple generators, with the aim of fulfilling load demands at the lowest possible total generation cost, while strictly conforming to the constraints imposed by the local generation capacity. For a faster resolution of the EDP, we propose an efficient distributed accelerated economic dispatch algorithm that incorporates a unified momentum acceleration strategy into the push-pull deviation tracking approach. The involved acceleration strategy under specific momentum parameters includes two well-known acceleration strategies, i.e., the heavy-ball and Nesterov acceleration strategies, which is more flexible and provides additional improvements in convergence. We present rigorously theoretical proof of linear convergence to the optimal dispatch with explicit bounds for step size and momentum parameters. Finally, to verify the effectiveness of our algorithm and the correctness of the theoretical analysis, we conduct simulations of diverse EDP studies in smart grids. © 2013 IEEE.

A Multi-module Robust Method for Transient Stability Assessment against False Label Injection Cyberattacks

The success of deep learning in transient stability assessment (TSA) heavily relies on high-quality training data. However, the label information in TSA datasets is vulnerable to contamination through false label injection (FLI) cyberattacks, resulting in degraded performance of deep TSA models. To address this challenge, a Multi-Module Robust TSA method (MMR) is proposed to rectify the supervised training process misguided by FLI in an unsupervised manner. In MMR, a supervised classification module and an unsupervised clustering module are alternatively trained to improve the clustering friendliness of representation leaning, thereby achieving accurate clustering assignments. Leveraging the clustering assignments, we construct a training label corrector to rectify the injected false labels and progressively enhance robustness and resilience against FLI. However, there is still a gap on accuracy and convergence speed between MMR and FLI-free deep TSA models. To narrow this gap, we further propose a human-in-the-loop training strategy, named MMR-HIL. In MMR-HIL, potential false samples can be detected by modeling the training loss with a Gaussian distribution. From these samples, the most likely false samples and most ambiguous samples are re-labeled by a TSA experts guided bi-directional annotator and then subjected to penalized optimization, aimed at improving accuracy and convergence speed. Extensive experiments indicate that MMR and MMR-HIL both exhibit powerful robustness against FLI in TSA performance. Adversarial examples for deep neural networks (DNNs) are transferable: examples that successfully fool one white-box surrogate model can also deceive other black-box models with different architectures. Although a bunch of empirical studies have provided guidance on generating highly transferable adversarial examples, many of these findings fail to be well explained and even lead to confusing or inconsistent advice for practical *** this paper, we take a further step towards understanding adversarial transferability, with a particular focus on surrogate aspects. Starting from the intriguing "little robustness" phenomenon, where models adversarially trained with mildly perturbed adversarial samples can serve as better surrogates for transfer attacks, we attribute it to a trade-off between two dominant factors: model smoothness and gradient similarity. Our research focuses on their joint effects on transferability, rather than demonstrating the separate relationships alone. Through a combination of theoretical and empirical analyses, we hypothesize that the data distribution shift induced by off-manifold samples in adversarial training is the reason that impairs gradient *** on these insights, we further explore the impacts of prevalent data augmentation and gradient regularization on transferability and analyze how the trade-off manifests in various training methods, thus building a comprehensive blueprint for the regulation mechanisms behind transferability. Finally, we provide a general route for constructing superior surrogates to boost transferability, which optimizes both model smoothness and gradient similarity simultaneously, e.g., the combination of input gradient regularization and sharpness-aware minimization (SAM), validated by extensive experiments. Recently, the autoregressive framework based on large language models (LLMs) has achieved excellent performance in controlling the generated text to adhere to the required style. These methods guide LLMs through prompt learning to generate target text in an autoregressive manner. However, this manner possesses lower controllability and suffers from the challenge of accumulating errors, where early prediction inaccuracies might influence subsequent word generation. Furthermore, existing prompt-based methods overlook specific region editing, resulting in a deficiency of localized control over input text. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel three-stage prompt-based approach for specific region editing. To alleviate the issue of accumulating errors, we transform the text style transfer task into a text infilling task, guiding the LLMs to modify only a small portion of text within the editing region to achieve style transfer, thus reducing the number of autoregressive iterations. To achieve an effective specific editing region, we adopt both prompt-based and word frequency-based strategies for region selection, subsequently employing a discriminator to validate the efficacy of the selected region. Experiments conducted on several publicly competitive datasets for text style transfer task confirm that our proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performance. © 2024 ELRA Language Resource Association: CC BY-NC 4.0.

Electrical stimulation is a powerful tool for targeted neurorehabilitation, and recent work in adaptive stimulation where stimulation can be adjusted in real-time has shown promise in improving stimulation outcomes and reducing stimulation-induced side effects. Mapping the relationship between electrical stimulation input and neural activity response can help reveal their interactions and can give us tools to iterate and improve on our stimulation protocols. Here, we introduce methods for identifying low-dimensional subspaces of human intracortical responses to electrical stimulation in invasive electroencephalography. In epilepsy patients (n=4) undergoing clinical monitoring, we applied a stimulation protocol of varying amplitude and frequency in 5-second intervals to capture a range of responses to different stimulation conditions. We characterized these responses using time-frequency spectral power, applied baseline subtraction and outlier removal procedures, and performed principal component analysis across frequencies. We identified that intracortical responses to different stimulation conditions can be represented in a 3-dimensional subspace, accounting for more than 95% of the variance. Using support vector machine classification, we demonstrated separability of intracortical responses in different stimulation conditions across subjects, where this separability was contingent on applying baseline subtraction and outlier removal. Our results represent a first step towards building a predictive model of neural response from stimulation input, an important prerequisite for adaptive closed-loop stimulation for targeted neurorehabilitation. © 2022 IEEE.

The proliferation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized the healthcare domain with technological advancements in conventional diagnosis and treatment methods. These advancements lead to faster disease detection, management and provide personalized healthcare solutions. However, most of the clinical AI methods developed and deployed in hospitals have algorithmic and data-driven biases due to insufficient representation of specific race, gender, and age group which leads to misdiagnosis, disparities, and unfair outcomes. The objective of this paper is to identify the potential sources of bias and mitigate them in healthcare data. We have selected an open source dataset of 48,785 primary care patients enrolled in risk-based contracts from 2013 to 2015 based on variety of variables including chronic conditions, medications, comorbidity, and healthcare cost. Through experiments with various machine learning algorithms leveraging Fairlearn tool, we have identified biases in the dataset, and then compare the impact of these biases on the prediction performance. Our results indicate that gender, racial, age, and intersectional bias have profound impact on the prediction performance which leads to unfair outcomes. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper discusses an adaptive neural tracking control of permanent magnet synchronous motors subject to input saturation and output constraint. The difficulty is to consider output constraints and input saturation. Firstly, the adaptive dynamic surface control design process is systematized by embedding many existing tools into the classical backstepping framework. Then, a nonlinear transformation function is proposed to transform the output constrained system into an unconstrained system. Furthermore, using radial basis function neural networks to Process the unknown terms, the Gaussian error function is utilized to describe the continuously differentiable asymmetric saturation nonlinearity. It turns out that all signals in the proposed scheme are bounded. The simulation results are provided to further show the feasibility of the proposed method. © 2022 IEEE.
