Distributions and statistical power of optimal signal-detection methods in finite cases

In big data analysis for detecting rare and weak signals among n features, some grouping-test methods such as Higher Criticism test (HC), Berk-Jones test (B-J), and φ-divergence test share the similar asymptotical optimality when n → ∞. However, in practical data analysis n is frequently small and moderately large at most. In order to properly apply these optimal tests and wisely choose them for practical studies, it is important to know how to get the p-values and statistical power of them. To address this problem in an even broader context, this paper provides analytical solutions for a general family of goodness-of-fit (GOF) tests, which covers these optimal tests. For any given i.i.d. and continuous distributions of the input test statistics of the n features, both p-value and statistical power of such a GOF test can be calculated. By calculation we compared the finite-sample performances of asymptotically optimal tests under the normal mixture alternative. Results show that HC is the best choice when signals are rare, while B-J is more robust over various signal patterns. In the application to a real genome-wide association study, results illustrate that the p-value calculation works well, and the optimal tests have potentials for detecting novel disease genes with weak genetic effects. Transformative artificially intelligent tools, such as ChatGPT, designed to generate sophisticated text indistinguishable from that produced by a human, are applicable across a wide range of contexts. The technology presents opportunities as well as, often ethical and legal, challenges, and has the potential for both positive and negative impacts for organisations, society, and individuals. Offering multi-disciplinary insight into some of these, this article brings together 43 contributions from experts in fields such as computer science, marketing, information systems, education, policy, hospitality and tourism, management, publishing, and nursing. The contributors acknowledge ChatGPT's capabilities to enhance productivity and suggest that it is likely to offer significant gains in the banking, hospitality and tourism, and information technology industries, and enhance business activities, such as management and marketing. Nevertheless, they also consider its limitations, disruptions to practices, threats to privacy and security, and consequences of biases, misuse, and misinformation. However, opinion is split on whether ChatGPT's use should be restricted or legislated. Drawing on these contributions, the article identifies questions requiring further research across three thematic areas: knowledge, transparency, and ethics;digital transformation of organisations and societies;and teaching, learning, and scholarly research. The avenues for further research include: identifying skills, resources, and capabilities needed to handle generative AI;examining biases of generative AI attributable to training datasets and processes;exploring business and societal contexts best suited for generative AI implementation;determining optimal combinations of human and generative AI for various tasks;identifying ways to assess accuracy of text produced by generative AI;and uncovering the ethical and legal issues in using generative AI across different contexts. © 2023 The Authors

A Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction Framework Using Smooth Geodesics

Existing dimensionality reduction methods are adept at revealing hidden underlying manifolds arising from high-dimensional data and thereby producing a low-dimensional representation. However, the smoothness of the manifolds produced by classic techniques over sparse and noisy data is not guaranteed. In fact, the embedding generated using such data may distort the geometry of the manifold and thereby produce an unfaithful embedding. Herein, we propose a framework for nonlinear dimensionality reduction that generates a manifold in terms of smooth geodesics that is designed to treat problems in which manifold measurements are either sparse or corrupted by noise. Our method generates a network structure for given high-dimensional data using a nearest neighbors search and then produces piecewise linear shortest paths that are defined as geodesics. Then, we fit points in each geodesic by a smoothing spline to emphasize the smoothness. Network Topology Mapping from Partial Virtual Coordinates and Graph Geodesics

For many important network types (e.g., sensor networks in complex harsh environments and social networks) physical coordinate systems (e.g., Cartesian), and physical distances (e.g., Euclidean), are either difficult to discern or inappropriate. Accordingly, Topology Preserving Maps (TPMs) derived from a Virtual-Coordinate (VC) system representing the distance to a small set of anchors is an attractive alternative to physical coordinates for many network algorithms. Herein, we present an approach, based on the theory of low-rank matrix completion, to recover geometric properties of a network with only partial information about the VCs of nodes. In particular, our approach is a combination of geodesic recovery concepts and low-rank matrix completion, generalized to the case of hop-distances in graphs. Distortion evaluated using the change of distance among node pairs shows that even with up to 40% to 60% of random coordinates missing, accurate TPMs can be obtained. TPM generation can now also be based on different context appropriate VC systems or measurements as long as they characterize each node with distances to a small set of random nodes (instead of a global set of anchors). Comparative photocatalytic performances towards acid yellow 17 (AY17) and direct blue 71 (DB71) degradation using Sn3O4 flower-like structure

Microsphere Sn3O4 flower-like structure has been successfully synthesized using a novel microwave-assisted hydrothermal method and comprehensively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM) and UV Vis spectrophotometer equipped with diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS). In order to examine its photocatalytic performance, two synthetic azo-based dyes, acid yellow 17 (AY17) and direct blue 71 (DB71), have been used as organic pollutant models degraded under visible-light illumination. The results show that the negative charges of Sn3O4 produce higher efficiency photocatalytic activity on DB71 degradation compared to that on AY17 degradation. Further investigation has confirmed that the adsorption capacities played the main role in determining photocatalytic performance and differentiated the quantum yield of dye degradation. Moreover, the different adsorption capacities are generated by the formation of electrostatic interaction and repulsion between surface charge of Sn3O4 and dyes functional groups.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Concussion classification via deep learning using whole-brain white matter fiber strains

Developing an accurate and reliable injury predictor is central to the biomechanical studies of traumatic brain injury. State-of-the-art efforts continue to rely on empirical, scalar metrics based on kinematics or model-estimated tissue responses explicitly pre-defined in a specific brain region of interest. They could suffer from loss of information. A single training dataset has also been used to evaluate performance but without cross-validation. In this study, we developed a deep learning approach for concussion classification using implicit features of the entire voxel-wise white matter fiber strains. Using reconstructed American National Football League (NFL) injury cases, leave-one-out cross-validation was employed to objectively compare injury prediction performances against two baseline machine learning classifiers (support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF)) and four scalar metrics via univariate logistic regression (Brain Injury Criterion (BrIC), cumulative strain damage measure of the whole brain (CSDM-WB) and the corpus callosum (CSDM-CC), and peak fiber strain in the CC). Feature-based deep learning and machine learning classifiers consistently outperformed all scalar injury metrics across all performance categories in cross-validation (e.g., average accuracy of 0.844 vs. 0.746, and average area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) of 0.873 vs. 0.769, respectively, based on the testing dataset). Nevertheless, deep learning achieved the best cross-validation accuracy, sensitivity, and AUC (e.g., accuracy of 0.862 vs. 0.828 and 0.842 for SVM and RF, respectively). These findings demonstrate the superior performances of deep learning in concussion prediction, and suggest its promise for future applications in biomechanical investigations of traumatic brain injury.
