There is an increasing demand for creative scientific, engineering, and management talent to meet national needs. We believe that the best way to educate professionals for leadership roles is in a unified multi-disciplinary curriculum. This paper describes one such program, a Master of science degree in Robotics Engineering at worcester polytechnic institute, whose goal is to prepare men and women for technical leadership in the robotics industry and research in robotics. The program, launched in fall 2009, develops competence in electro-mechanical-computational systems and an awareness of management systems. It constitutes a multi-disciplinary effort by faculty in Arts & sciences (Mathematics and Computer science), Engineering (Electrical & Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering), and Management. The program is organized around a technical coursework core with select science and engineering electives. Technical strength is supplemented by organizational and management principles embodied in context courses in Systems Engineering and Management. The program culminates in individual capstone projects that take the form of a thesis, directed research, or practicum with written report. In all cases, a public oral presentation is required. A B.S./M.S. option allows the program to be completed in a single additional year of work past the Bachelor's degree. By using existing courses where appropriate, we were able to start the program by developing only two new courses, Foundations of Robotics and Robot Dynamics, supplemented by special topics, independent study, and other project work. We anticipate adding new courses as the program grows, additional faculty join the program, and as we introduce a Ph.D. in Robotics Engineering. Initial response to the program by students and industry has been very positive, and the program shows great promise to contribute significantly to meeting future engineering workforce needs. © American Society for Engineering Education,

In the spring of 2007, worcester polytechnic institute introduced a BS degree program in Robotics Engineering. The degree program is a collaborative effort, involving faculty from the departments of Computer science, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The motivation for establishing the program is two-fold: needs of the rapidly growing robotics industry and student interest as demonstrated by numerous high school robotics competitions. The program relies in part on already existing courses, but the core curriculum consists of five new "unified robotics engineering" courses. Although Robotics Engineering is not recognized as a distinct engineering field by ABET, the program is designed to be accreditable under the "General Engineering" ABET criteria. While the program is less than a year old, there is already significant student interest. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2008.

This paper describes a graphical data mining system called AutoDomainMine. It is based on our proposed approach of integrating clustering and classification to mine scientific data stored in a database. The data consists of input conditions of scientific experiments and graphs plotted as their results. This system mines the stored data in order to submit exact or approximate ranked responses to user queries intended to optimize the scientific processes.

Conclusions of this research and implications for teaching can be summarized as follows: The level of comprehension evident in students' written explanations of their way of understanding and applying the lever rule is positively associated with summative measures of learning. Therefore, developing students' ability to describe their lever rule heuristic clearly and with relevant concepts is likely to be more important and beneficial than encouraging the use of a particular heuristic. Furthermore, teaching interventions might well be targeted at those students who can't explain concepts well in writing. Students who reported affinity for the mass balance as a means of applying the lever rule seemed attracted by the mathematical way in which it was presented. These students on average showed lower homework and exam scores than students who identified other heuristics. The quality of student responses to open-ended preparation assessment questions was a better predictor of summative measures of learning than the correctness of their responses to clicker questions. Therefore, open-ended and/or conceptual questions may have more value than calculation questions as a diagnostic and development tool in learning about phase diagrams. More refinement of strategies for effective feedback and accompanying classroom research is needed to fully realize the benefits of formative assessment in advancing student understandings of the lever rule and of other topics in materials science. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

The utilization of Cambridge Engineering Selector (CES4) software and the response of the response of the students towards it is discussed. The test hypotheses about how it might be received by students with different learning styles is also presented. Using educational versions of the software, students are able to browse a database of material attributes, learn about and compare different materials in a graphical manner, and select materials using a variety of design criteria. It is considered that judging students, on average, was more useful than percieving students, reflecting dominant use of the software as a structured decision-making analysis tool.

Educational technologies like web-deployed assessments and student response systems provide opportunities for formative assessment that would be expected to enhance student learning and help create a more active classroom environment. These technologies can be used in ways that might help or hinder particular types of learners, yet not much research has been done in this area. This paper describes student response to Blackboard™-delivered "preparation assessments" and use of the Classroom Performance System™ in two offerings of a large-enrollment introductory materials science course. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was used as a measure of learning style, and pre- and post-course questionnaires probed students' reactions. Initial findings indicate that Judging and Perceiving students respond differently to both technologies, and that students with Extroversion preferences tend to react in particular ways to use of CPS. Effects of gender, however, are as or more pervasive than effects of type, and gender and type interact in complex ways.
