Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of death among women worldwide. Early detection helps in reducing the number of deaths. Automated 3D Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) is a newer approach for breast screening, which has many advantages over handheld mammography such as safety, speed, and higher detection rate of breast cancer. Tumor detection, segmentation, and classification are key components in the analysis of medical images, especially challenging in the context of 3D ABUS due to the significant variability in tumor size and shape, unclear tumor boundaries, and a low signal-to-noise ratio. The lack of publicly accessible, well-labeled ABUS datasets further hinders the advancement of systems for breast tumor analysis. Addressing this gap, we have organized the inaugural Tumor Detection, Segmentation, and Classification Challenge on Automated 3D Breast Ultrasound 2023 (TDSC-ABUS2023). This initiative aims to spearhead research in this field and create a definitive benchmark for tasks associated with 3D ABUS image analysis. In this paper, we summarize the top-performing algorithms from the challenge and provide critical analysis for ABUS image examination. The human brain receives nutrients and oxygen through an intricate network of blood vessels. Pathology affecting small vessels, at the mesoscopic scale, represents a critical vulnerability within the cerebral blood supply and can lead to severe conditions, such as Cerebral Small Vessel Diseases. The advent of 7 Tesla MRI systems has enabled the acquisition of higher spatial resolution images, making it possible to visualise such vessels in the brain. However, the lack of publicly available annotated datasets has impeded the development of robust, machine learning-driven segmentation algorithms. To address the complexities of mesoscopic vessel segmentation and to highlight the need for advanced techniques to manage the high noise levels and poor vessel-to-background contrast inherent in"ultra-high-resolution" data, the SMILE-UHURA challenge was organised. This challenge, held in conjunction with the ISBI 2023, in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, aimed to provide a platform for researchers working on related topics. The SMILE-UHURA challenge addresses the gap in publicly available annotated datasets by providing an annotated dataset of Time-of-Flight angiography acquired with 7T MRI. This dataset was created through a combination of automated pre-segmentation and extensive manual refinement. In this manuscript, sixteen submitted methods and two baseline methods are compared both quantitatively and qualitatively on two different datasets: held-out test MRAs from the same dataset as the training data (with labels kept secret) and a separate 7T ToF MRA dataset where both input volumes and labels are kept secret. The results demonstrate that most of the submitted deep learning methods, trained on the provided training dataset, achieved reliable segmentation performance. Dice scores reached up to 0.838 ± 0.066 and 0.716 ± 0.125 on the respective datasets, with an average performance of up to 0.804 ± 0.15. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Hybrid feature selection to identify important single nucleotide polymorphism for asthma classification

Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), being the most common genetic variation, is found to be responsible for traits and complex diseases such as asthma. Polygenic risk scoring (PRS) and machine learning (ML) are the current two common types of genetic risk prediction models. PRS employs statistical association testing to identify alleles with risk. However, it was found not performing well in unraveling the SNP-SNP interactions and attaining low predictive value. In contrast, ML algorithms are more robust in detecting disease associated SNPs, resulting in an improvement in prediction performance. The challenge remains as the high dimensionality nature of SNP tends to cause overfitting problems and impact the classifier performance. This paper introduces a two-stage hybrid feature selection that integrates Mutual Information and Random Forest Recursive Feature Elimination for identifying informative SNPs from 176,287 SNPs in a dataset of 128 asthmatic and non-asthmatic samples. The reduced samples based on the identified informative SNPs are then used with Support Vector Machine to train a classification model. The model from this paper outperforms other ML models with an average accuracy, precision, recall and area under the curve of 98.91%, 98.36%, 99.72% and 0.99 respectively. Additional analysis shows that the genes associated with the top selected SNPs, namely Ring Finger Protein 217 (RNF217) and A-kinase-anchoring protein 6 (AKAP6) are correlated with respiratory diseases. This shows that the proposed method can identify important SNPs that are able to differentiate between asthmatic and non-asthmatic samples.

Realistic Adversarial data Augmentation for MR Image Segmentation

Neural network-based approaches can achieve high accuracy in various medical image segmentation tasks. However, they generally require large labelled datasets for supervised learning. Acquiring and manually labelling a large medical dataset is expensive and sometimes impractical due to data sharing and privacy issues. In this work, we propose an adversarial data augmentation method for training neural networks for medical image segmentation. Instead of generating pixel-wise adversarial attacks, our model generates plausible and realistic signal corruptions, which models the intensity inhomogeneities caused by a common type of artefacts in MR imaging: bias field. The proposed method does not rely on generative networks, and can be used as a plug-in module for general segmentation networks in both supervised and semi-supervised learning. Using cardiac MR imaging we show that such an approach can improve the generalization ability and robustness of models as well as provide significant improvements in low-data scenarios. Match2: A Matching over Matching Model for Similar Question Identification

Community Question Answering (CQA) has become a primary means for people to acquire knowledge, where people are free to ask questions or submit answers. To enhance the efficiency of the service, similar question identification becomes a core task in CQA which aims to find a similar question from the archived repository whenever a new question is asked. However, it has long been a challenge to properly measure the similarity between two questions due to the inherent variation of natural language, i.e., there could be different ways to ask a same question or different questions sharing similar expressions. To alleviate this problem, it is natural to involve the existing answers for the enrichment of the archived questions. Traditional methods typically take a one-side usage, which leverages the answer as some expanded representation of the corresponding question. Unfortunately, this may introduce unexpected noises into the similarity computation since answers are often long and diverse, leading to inferior performance. In this work, we propose a two-side usage, which leverages the answer as a bridge of the two questions. The key idea is based on our observation that similar questions could be addressed by similar parts of the answer while different questions may not. In other words, we can compare the matching patterns of the two questions over the same answer to measure their similarity. In this way, we propose a novel matching over matching model, namely Match2, which compares the matching patterns between two question-answer pairs for similar question identification. HSD Shared Task in VLSP Campaign 2019: Hate Speech Detection for Social Good

The paper describes the organisation of the "Hate Speech Detection" (HSD) task at the VLSP workshop 2019 on detecting the fine-grained presence of hate speech in Vietnamese textual items (i.e., messages) extracted from Facebook, which is the most popular social network site (SNS) in Vietnam. The task is organised as a multi-class classification task and based on a large-scale dataset containing 25,431 Vietnamese textual items from Facebook. The task participants were challenged to build a classification model that is capable of classifying an item to one of 3 classes, i.e., "HATE’, "OFFENSIVE" and "CLEAN". HSD attracted a large number of participants and was a popular task at VLSP 2019. In particular, there were 71 teams signed up for the task, 14 of them submitted results with 380 valid submissions from 20th September 2019 to 4th October 2019. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. MINI-Net: Multiple instance ranking network for video highlight detection

We address the weakly supervised video highlight detection problem for learning to detect segments that are more attractive in training videos given their video event label but without expensive supervision of manually annotating highlight segments. While manually averting localizing highlight segments, weakly supervised modeling is challenging, as a video in our daily life could contain highlight segments with multiple event types, e.g., skiing and surfing. In this work, we propose casting weakly supervised video highlight detection modeling for a given specific event as a multiple instance ranking network (MINI-Net) learning. We consider each video as a bag of segments, and therefore, the proposed MINI-Net learns to enforce a higher highlight score for a positive bag that contains highlight segments of a specific event than those for negative bags that are irrelevant. In particular, we form a max-max ranking loss to acquire a reliable relative comparison between the most likely positive segment instance and the hardest negative segment instance. With this max-max ranking loss, our MINI-Net effectively leverages all segment information to acquire a more distinct video feature representation for localizing the highlight segments of a specific event in a video. The extensive experimental results on three challenging public benchmarks clearly validate the efficacy of our multiple instance ranking approach for solving the problem.
