To generate large number of reports in a limited time window, four techniques were proposed, including ROLAP&SQL, Shared Scanning, Hadoop based Solution, and MOLAP&Cube Sharding, an algorithm that performs in memory aggregation was designed for the second solution. The experiment results show that all techniques except ROLAP&SQL can meet the time window constraint, the Hadoop based solution is a promising technique owe to its highly scalability. Considering maturity of the techniques and their performance, we put MOLAP&Cube Sharding into practice while keeping an eye on Hadoop for future adoption.

John Maeda is a past president of Rhode Island School of Design and an internationally known designer. He's now involved in helping entrepreneurs build design into their company cultures. Writer and educator Steven Heller pairs up with Tim Hoover, head of product and design at Canary, to talk about designer CEOs, start‐ups, and cutting out the middleman.
Recently, sparse representation has been utilized in many computer vision tasks and adapted for visual tracking. Sparsity-based visual tracking is formulated as searching candidates with minimal reconstruction errors ...

The reliability analysis of critical systems could be performed with fault tree analysis. One of the approaches used for fault tree analysis is Monte Carlo simulation. The purpose of this paper is therefore to show an algorithm to speed-up Monte Carlo simulation for analyzing fault tree with parallel computing in GPU. To this end, we use time-to-failure tree to model fault tree with Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) which is used to accelerate the execution of loops with many repetitions. Furthermore, we also use this technique to accelerate Monte Carlo simulations. In addition, we visualize fault tree so that the user is able to generate fault tree in detail using our developed software and can execute it. The computational outcomes validate the effectiveness of the suggested approach, as we approached about 310 times speed-up in large fault trees.

A novel technique for updating in XML using semantic constraints is proposed. In the proposed technique for XML updating, we consider close value pair semantics in ordered XML documents. Further, how semantic constraints can be incorporated with integrity constraints for XML updat-ing and how to update XML views using semantic constraints are discussed.

Oblique incidence magnetic thin films are considered to be the most appropriate recording media for the next generation of video tape applications. In order to study the microstructure of such thin films, a specimen preparation technique employing ultramicrotomy has been developed. Because oblique incidence thin films have a porous structure and poor adhesion to the substrate, the problem of splitting of the thin films from the substrate is severe. This problem is reduced considerably by the following exercises: 1. using an acrylic embedding resin e.g. LR White (London Resin Co.), 2. thorough degreasing with solvents, 3. using a 55° diamond knife, and 4. trimming the block with a microtome before actual sectioning. The details of this preparation technique and some results obtained with this technique are presented.
