Over the past decade, various methods for detecting side-channel leakage have been proposed and proven to be effective against CPU side-channel attacks. These methods are valuable in assisting developers to identify and patch side-channel vulnerabilities. Nevertheless, recent research has revealed the feasibility of exploiting side-channel vulnerabilities to steal sensitive information from GPU applications, which are beyond the reach of previous side-channel detection methods. Therefore, in this paper, we conduct an in-depth examination of various GPU features and present Owl, a novel side-channel detection tool targeting CUDA applications on NVIDIA GPUs. Owl is designed to detect and locate side-channel leakage in various types of CUDA applications. When tracking the execution of CUDA applications, we design a hierarchical tracing scheme and extend the A-DCFG (Attributed Dynamic Control Flow Graph) to address the massively parallel execution in CUDA, ensuring Owl's detection scalability. After completing the initial assessment and filtering, we conduct statistical tests on the differences in program traces to determine whether they are indeed caused by input variations, subsequently facilitating the positioning of side-channel leaks. We evaluate Owl's capability to detect side-channel leaks by testing it on Libgpucrypto, PyTorch, and nvJPEG. Meanwhile, we verify that our solution effectively handles a large number of threads. Owl has successfully identified hundreds of leaks within these applications. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to implement side-channel leakage detection for general CUDA applications.

From a Social Cognitive Perspective: Context-aware Visual Social Relationship Recognition

People's social relationships are often manifested through their surroundings, with certain objects or interactions acting as symbols for specific relationships, e.g., wedding rings, roses, hugs, or holding hands. This brings unique challenges to recognizing social relationships, requiring understanding and capturing the essence of these contexts from visual appearances. However, current methods of social relationship understanding rely on the basic classification paradigm of detected persons and objects, which fails to understand the comprehensive context and often overlooks decisive social factors, especially subtle visual cues. To highlight the social-aware context and intricate details, we propose a novel approach that recognizes Contextual Social Relationships (ConSoR) from a social cognitive perspective. Specifically, to incorporate social-aware semantics, we build a lightweight adapter upon the frozen CLIP to learn social concepts via our novel multi-modal side adapter tuning mechanism. Further, we construct social-aware descriptive language prompts (e.g., scene, activity, objects, emotions) with social relationships for each image, and then compel ConSoR to concentrate more intensively on the decisive visual social factors via visual-linguistic contrasting. Impressively, ConSoR outperforms previous methods with a 12.2% gain on the People-in-Social-Context (PISC) dataset and a 9.8% increase on the People-in-Photo-Album (PIPA) benchmark. This paper introduces a model-agnostic approach designed to enhance uncertainty estimation in the predictive modeling of soil properties, a crucial factor for advancing pedometrics and the practice of digital soil mapping. For ad-dressing the typical challenge of data scarcity in soil studies, we present an improved technique for uncertainty estimation. This method is based on the transformation of regression tasks into classification problems, which not only allows for the production of reliable uncertainty estimates but also enables the application of established machine learning algorithms with competitive performance that have not yet been utilized in pedometrics. Empirical results from datasets collected from two German agricultural fields showcase the practical application of the proposed methodology. Our results and findings suggest that the proposed approach has the potential to provide better uncertainty estimation than the models commonly used in pedometrics. © 2024 IEEE.

In the fight against cancer, anticancer peptides (ACP) hold promising therapeutic potential due to their selective cytotoxicity and lower side effects compared to traditional treatments. However, identifying novel ACP is challenged by high costs and labor-intensive processes. Protein language models (PLMs), such as ESM-2 and ProtBERT, have revolutionized peptide prediction by leveraging vast datasets to capture complex biological patterns through pre-training. However, they often struggle to accurately model specific biochemical interactions. To address this limitation, we integrated four sequence-based features: amino acid composition (AAC), dipeptide composition (DPC), composition of k-spaced amino acid group pairs (CKS), and k-mer sparse matrix (k-mer) through a cross-attention mechanism. These features infuse biochemical insights that PLM alone may overlook, enabling a more detailed prediction of anti-cancer properties. This integration enhances biochemical insights, improving prediction accuracy by 15.8% for ProtBERT and 2.9% for ESM-2, with ESM-2 achieving the highest accuracy at 77.8%. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis confirms the importance of these features, demonstrating that incorporating amino acid features into PLMs enhances ACP prediction.

Video stream analytics (VSA) systems fuel many exciting applications that facilitate people’s lives, but also raise critical concerns about exposing too much individuals’ privacy. To alleviate these concerns, various frameworks have been presented to enhance the privacy of VSA systems. Yet, existing solutions suffer two limitations: (1) being scenario-customized, thus limiting the generality of adapting to multifarious scenarios, (2) requiring complex, imperative programming, and tedious process, thus largely reducing the usability of such systems. In this paper, we present X-Stream, a privacy-preserving video transformer that achieves flexibility and efficiency for a large variety of VSA tasks. X-Stream features three major novel designs: (1) a declarative query interface that provides a simple yet expressive interface for users to describe both their privacy protection and content exposure requirements, (2) an adaptation mechanism that dynamically selects the most suitable privacy-preserving techniques and their parameters based on the current video context, and (3) an efficient execution engine that incorporates optimizations for multi-task deduplication and inter-frame inference. We implement X-Stream and evaluate it with representative VSA tasks and public video datasets. The results show that X-Stream achieves significantly improved privacy protection quality and performance over the state-of-the-art, while being simple to use.

Transformer-based models have demonstrated substantial potential in medical image segmentation tasks due to their exceptional ability to capture long-range dependencies. To further enhance segmentation performance, various effective methods have been proposed, including pretraining methods (weakly supervised or self-supervised pretraining schemes), contrastive learning schemes, and knowledge distillation methods. However, segmenting esophageal cancer (EC) from CT images remains a significant challenge, partly due to the complex anatomy of EC, such as variable shapes, extensive extents, and often blurred boundaries with adjacent anatomical structures. In this study, we propose a prior-guided pretraining (PGP) regimen based on bounding boxes, which enhances the model's ability to discern textural differences between EC and the surrounding tissues. Using Swin UNITR as the backbone, our proposed pretraining scheme demonstrates superior performance in EC segmentation compared to other schemes. To further improve the segmentation accuracy of EC, we also addressed the class imbalance and long-tail problems inherent in EC segmentation, thereby further enhancing segmentation performance. © 2024 IEEE.

Federated learning (FL) has been widely acknowledged as a promising solution to training machine learning (ML) model training with privacy preservation. To reduce the traffic overheads incurred by FL systems, edge servers have been included between clients and the parameter server to aggregate clients' local models. Recent studies on this edge-assisted hierarchical FL scheme have focused on ensuring or accelerating model convergence by coping with various factors, e.g., uncertain network conditions, unreliable clients, heterogeneous compute resources, etc. This paper presents our three new discoveries of the edge-assisted hierarchical FL scheme: 1) it wastes significant time during its two-phase training rounds;2) it does not recognize or utilize model diversity when producing a global model;and 3) it is vulnerable to model poisoning attacks. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose FedEdge, a novel edge-assisted hierarchical FL scheme that accelerates model training with asynchronous local federated training and adaptive model aggregation. Extensive experiments are conducted on two widely-used public datasets. The results demonstrate that, compared with state-of-the-art FL schemes, FedEdge accelerates model convergence by 1.14 × -3.20 ×, and improves model accuracy by 2.14% - 6.63%. © 2023 ACM.

Traditional unlearnable strategies have been proposed to prevent unauthorized users from training on the 2D image data. With more 3D point cloud data containing sensitivity information, unauthorized usage of this new type data has also become a serious concern. To address this, we propose the first integral unlearnable framework for 3D point clouds including two processes: (i) we propose an unlearnable data protection scheme, involving a class-wise setting established by a category-adaptive allocation strategy and multi-transformations assigned to samples;(ii) we propose a data restoration scheme that utilizes class-wise inverse matrix transformation, thus enabling authorized-only training for unlearnable data. This restoration process is a practical issue overlooked in most existing unlearnable literature, i.e., even authorized users struggle to gain knowledge from 3D unlearnable data. Both theoretical and empirical results (including 6 datasets, 16 models, and 2 tasks) demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed unlearnable framework. Federated learning (FL) and split learning (SL) are prevailing distributed paradigms in recent years. They both enable shared global model training while keeping data localized on users’ devices. The former excels in parallel execution capabilities, while the latter enjoys low dependence on edge computing resources and strong privacy protection. Split federated learning (SFL) combines the strengths of both FL and SL, making it one of the most popular distributed architectures. Furthermore, a recent study has claimed that SFL exhibits robustness against poisoning attacks, with a fivefold improvement compared to FL in terms of *** this paper, we present a novel poisoning attack known as $\color{Fuchsia} {{\text{MISA}}}$. It poisons both the top and bottom models, causing a misalignment in the global model, ultimately leading to a drastic accuracy collapse. This attack unveils the vulnerabilities in SFL, challenging the conventional belief that SFL is robust against poisoning attacks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed MISA poses a significant threat to the availability of SFL, underscoring the imperative for academia and industry to accord this matter due attention.

With the evolution of self-supervised learning, the pre-training paradigm has emerged as a predominant solution within the deep learning landscape. Model providers furnish pre-trained encoders designed to function as versatile feature extractors, enabling downstream users to harness the benefits of expansive models with minimal effort through fine-tuning. Nevertheless, recent works have exposed a vulnerability in pre-trained encoders, highlighting their susceptibility to downstream-agnostic adversarial examples (DAEs) meticulously crafted by attackers. The lingering question pertains to the feasibility of fortifying the robustness of downstream models against DAEs, particularly in scenarios where the pre-trained encoders are publicly accessible to the *** this paper, we initially delve into existing defensive mechanisms against adversarial examples within the pre-training paradigm. Our findings reveal that the failure of current defenses stems from the domain shift between pre-training data and downstream tasks, as well as the sensitivity of encoder parameters. In response to these challenges, we propose Genetic Evolution-Nurtured Adversarial Fine-tuning (Gen-AF), a two-stage adversarial fine-tuning approach aimed at enhancing the robustness of downstream models. Gen-AF employs a genetic-directed dual-track adversarial fine-tuning strategy in its first stage to effectively inherit the pre-trained encoder. This involves optimizing the pre-trained encoder and classifier separately while incorporating genetic regularization to preserve the model’s topology. In the second stage, Gen-AF assesses the robust sensitivity of each layer and creates a dictionary, based on which the top-k robust redundant layers are selected with the remaining layers held fixed. Upon this foundation, we conduct evolutionary adaptability fine-tuning to further enhance the model’s generalizability.
