The fusion of multimodal medical data is crucial for helping doctors make accurate treatment decisions. For example, combining Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography (CTPA) with Electronic Health Records (EHR) can significantly improve the accuracy of Pulmonary Embolism (PE) detection, thereby increasing patient survival rates. Although multimodal learning has advantages in PE diagnosis, the heterogeneity of multimodal data poses a significant challenge to accurate diagnosis. The natural semantic and structural differences between data modalities make it difficult to effectively integrate their information. In addition, within a single modality, the existence of redundant and irrelevant information introduces unnecessary variability, making the data more complex, and making stable diagnosis challenging. To address these issues, we propose a new framework called CCLNet, which includes a contrastive learning component for addressing inter-modality heterogeneity and a causal learning component for handling intra-modality heterogeneity. Specifically, we achieve precise alignment between visual and tabular modalities by using global-level information to soften labels during contrastive learning. In addition, by using causal intervention methods to eliminate the influence of heterogeneous factors within the modality, we can accurately reveal the causal relationship between features and targets, thereby improving the accuracy and stability of the model. Experimental results demonstrate that our method performs excellently, achieving the best results. Our code is available at https://***/LeavingStarW/CLPE.

Towards Unified Prompt Tuning for Few-shot Text Classification

Prompt-based fine-tuning has boosted the performance of Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) on few-shot text classification by employing task-specific prompts. Yet, PLMs are unfamiliar with prompt-style expressions during pre-training, which limits the few-shot learning performance on downstream tasks. It would be desirable if the models can acquire some prompting knowledge before adaptation to specific NLP tasks. We present the Unified Prompt Tuning (UPT) framework, leading to better few-shot text classification for BERT-style models by explicitly capturing prompting semantics from non-target NLP datasets. In UPT, a novel paradigm Prompt-Options-Verbalizer is proposed for joint prompt learning across different NLP tasks, forcing PLMs to capture task-invariant prompting knowledge. We further design a self-supervised task named Knowledge-enhanced Selective Masked Language Modeling to improve the PLM's generalization abilities for accurate adaptation to previously unseen tasks. After multi-task learning across multiple tasks, the PLM can be better prompt-tuned towards any dissimilar target tasks in low-resourced settings. Schizophrenia (SZ) is a prevalent mental disorder characterized by cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes. Symptoms of SZ include hallucinations, illusions, delusions, lack of motivation, and difficulties in concentration. While the exact causes of SZ remain unproven, factors such as brain injuries, stress, and psychotropic drugs have been implicated in its development. SZ can be classified into different types, including paranoid, disorganized, catatonic, undifferentiated, and residual. Diagnosing SZ involves employing various tools, including clinical interviews, physical examinations, psychological evaluations, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), and neuroimaging techniques. Electroencephalography (EEG) recording is a significant functional neuroimaging modality that provides valuable insights into brain function during SZ. However, EEG signal analysis poses challenges for neurologists and scientists due to the presence of artifacts, long-term recordings, and the utilization of multiple channels. To address these challenges, researchers have introduced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, encompassing conventional machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods, to aid in SZ diagnosis. This study reviews papers focused on SZ diagnosis utilizing EEG signals and AI methods. The introduction section provides a comprehensive explanation of SZ diagnosis methods and intervention techniques. Subsequently, review papers in this field are discussed, followed by an introduction to the AI methods employed for SZ diagnosis and a summary of relevant papers presented in tabular form. Additionally, this study reports on the most significant challenges encountered in SZ diagnosis, as identified through a review of papers in this field. Future directions to overcome these challenges are also addressed. SmartEdit: Exploring Complex Instruction-based Image Editing with Multimodal Large Language Models

Current instruction-based editing methods, such as InstructPix2Pix, often fail to produce satisfactory results in complex scenarios due to their dependence on the simple CLIP text encoder in diffusion models. To rectify this, this paper introduces SmartEdit, a novel approach to instruction-based image editing that leverages Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) to enhance their understanding and reasoning capabilities. However, direct integration of these elements still faces challenges in situations requiring complex reasoning. To mitigate this, we propose a Bidirectional Interaction Module that enables comprehensive bidirectional information interactions between the input image and the MLLM output. During training, we initially incorporate perception data to boost the perception and understanding capabilities of diffusion models. Subsequently, we demonstrate that a small amount of complex instruction editing data can effectively stimulate SmartEdit’s editing capabilities for more complex instructions. We further construct a new evaluation dataset, Reason-Edit, specifically tailored for complex instruction-based image editing. Both quantitative and qualitative results on this evaluation dataset indicate that our SmartEdit surpasses previous methods, paving the way for the practical application of complex instruction-based image editing. CLAPSep: Leveraging Contrastive Pre-trained Model for Multi-Modal Query-Conditioned Target Sound Extraction

Universal sound separation (USS) aims to extract arbitrary types of sounds from real-world recordings. This can be achieved by language-queried target sound extraction (TSE), which typically consists of two components: a query network that converts user queries into conditional embeddings, and a separation network that extracts the target sound accordingly. Existing methods commonly train models from scratch. As a consequence, substantial data and computational resources are required to make the randomly initialized model comprehend sound events and perform separation accordingly. In this paper, we propose to integrate pre-trained models into TSE models to address the above issue. To be specific, we tailor and adapt the powerful contrastive language-audio pre-trained model (CLAP) for USS, denoted as CLAPSep. CLAPSep also accepts flexible user inputs, taking both positive and negative user prompts of uni- and/or multi-modalities for target sound extraction. These key features of CLAPSep can not only enhance the extraction performance but also improve the versatility of its application. We provide extensive experiments on 5 diverse datasets to demonstrate the superior performance and zero- and few-shot generalizability of our proposed CLAPSep with fast training convergence, surpassing previous methods by a significant margin. In the fast-changing realm of information, the capacity to construct coherent timelines from extensive event-related content has become increasingly significant and challenging. The complexity arises in aggregating related documents to build a meaningful event graph around a central topic. This paper proposes CHRONOS - Causal Headline Retrieval for Open-domain News Timeline SummarizatiOn via Iterative Self-Questioning, which offers a fresh perspective on the integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) to tackle the task of Timeline Summarization (TLS). By iteratively reflecting on how events are linked and posing new questions regarding a specific news topic to gather information online or from an offline knowledge base, LLMs produce and refresh chronological summaries based on documents retrieved in each round. Furthermore, we curate Open-TLS, a novel dataset of timelines on recent news topics authored by professional journalists to evaluate open-domain TLS where information overload makes it impossible to find comprehensive relevant documents from the web. Our experiments indicate that CHRONOS is not only adept at open-domain timeline summarization, but it also rivals the performance of existing state-of-the-art systems designed for closed-domain applications, where a related news corpus is provided for summarization. GoMORE: Global Model Reuse for Resource-Constrained Wireless Federated Learning

Due to the dynamics of wireless environment and limited bandwidth, wireless federated learning (FL) is challenged by frequent transmission errors and incomplete aggregation from devices. In order to overcome these challenges, we propose a Global MOdel REuse strategy (GoMORE) that reuses the outdated global model to replace the local model parameters once a transmission error occurs. We analytically prove that the proposed GoMORE is strictly superior over the existing strategy, especially at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). In addition, based on the derived expression of weight divergence, we further optimize the number of participating devices in the model aggregation to maximize the FL performance with limited communication resources. Numerical results verify that the proposed GoMORE successfully approaches the performance upper bound by an ideal transmission. It also mitigates the negative impact of non-independent and non-identically distributed (non-IID) data while achieving over 5 dB reduction in energy consumption. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Optical resonators are optical components with numerous applications in modern physics and technology [1]. Indeed, they can provide spectral selectivity of optical signals and increase the intensity of light in a small volume of space. For these reasons, among others, they are important components in devices such as lasers. Resonators can also be used for frequency doubling, sum and difference frequency generation, optical parametric amplification and optical isolation. They have a wide range of applications, including chemical, biological and thermal spectroscopy and optical communication networks. In addition, resonators provide an ideal platform for studying and controlling quantum mechanical interactions. © 2023 IEEE.

In the women's community, Breast Cancer (BC) is a severe disease. The World Health Organization reported in 2020 that 2.26 million deaths occur due to BC. BC is curable if detected early. Since thermal imaging is non-invasive and supports disease detection, it is commonly used in clinics. Compared to other methods, it keeps BC early and accurate. The proposed work aims to evaluate the performance of the Pretrained Deep-Learning Methods (PDLM) in detecting BC using the thermal images collected from the benchmark dataset. It includes the following stages: primary image processing, deep feature mining, handcrafted feature mining, feature optimization using Firefly-Algorithm (FA), classification and validation. Visual lab thermal images were used in the study. The investigational outcome of this study authenticates that the VGG16, along with the DT, provides better detection accuracy (95.5%) compared to other classifiers used in this study. To justify the significance of the implemented technique, the proposed work not only improved accuracy, but also improved precision, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-Scores. © 2023 The Authors. Mamba Adapter: Efficient Multi-Modal Fusion for Vision-Language Tracking

Utilizing the high-level semantic information of language to compensate for the limitations of vision information is a highly regarded approach in single-object tracking. However, most existing vision-language (VL) trackers employ full-parameter fine-tuning, which can easily lead to catastrophic forgetting. Therefore, they fail to fully exploit the prior knowledge of pre-trained models from upstream tasks, resulting in unsatisfactory tracking performance. To alleviate the above problem, we propose a simple yet effective Vision-Language Tracking pipeline based on Mamba Adapter, named MAVLT, which adopts the idea of parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) to realize the interaction between vision-language modalities. This novel approach offers the following advantages: (1)The knowledge of the upstream pre-trained model is efficiently inherited by freezing its parameters. This ensures that the VL tracking framework only learns the modules for vision and language interaction, with a focus on the fusion between modalities. (2)The modal interaction between language and vision encoders is flexibly bridged in each encoder layer via proposed mamba adapter, enabling efficient interaction of visual and language information at multiple levels. Extensive experiments on five popular vision-language tracking benchmarks validate the effectiveness of the proposed MAVLT. Particularly, the MAVLT achieves 73.4% AUC score on the LaSOT benchmarks with only 0.18%(0.32M) of the total parameters updates.
