Development and Evaluation of a Process to Link Cancer Patients in the SEER Registries to National Medicaid Enrollment data

Cancer patients receiving Medicaid have worse prognosis. Patients in 14 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer registries were linked to national Medicaid enrollment files, 2006-2013, to determine enrollment status during the year before and after diagnosis. A deterministic algorithm based on Social Security number, Medicare Health Insurance Claim number, sex, and date of birth was utilized. Results were compared with an independent linkage of Kentucky-based SEER and Medicaid data. A total 559 484 cancer cases were linked to national Medicaid enrollment files, representing 15-17% of persons with cancer yearly. About 60% of these cases were a complete match on all variables. There was 99% agreement on enrollment status compared with the Kentucky linked data. SEER data were successfully linked to national Medicaid enrollment data. NCI will make the linked data available to researchers, allowing for more detailed assessments of the impact Medicaid enrollment has on cancer diagnosis and outcomes. © 2020 Published by Oxford University Press. Background: Improving the accessibility of screening diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from non-diabetic kidney disease (NDKD) are two major challenges in the field of diabetes care. We aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning system to detect DKD and isolated diabetic nephropathy from retinal fundus images. Methods: In this population-based study, we developed a retinal image-based AI-deep learning system, DeepDKD, pretrained using 734 084 retinal fundus images. First, for DKD detection, we used 486 312 retinal images from 121 578 participants in the Shanghai Integrated Diabetes Prevention and Care System for development and internal validation, and ten multi-ethnic datasets from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the UK (65 406 participants) for external validation. Second, to differentiate isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, we used 1068 retinal images from 267 participants for development and internal validation, and three multi-ethnic datasets from China, Malaysia, and the UK (244 participants) for external validation. Finally, we conducted two proof-of-concept studies: a prospective real-world study with 3 months' follow-up to evaluate the effectiveness of DeepDKD in screening DKD;and a longitudinal analysis of the effectiveness of DeepDKD in differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD on renal function changes with 4·6 years' follow-up. Findings: For detecting DKD, DeepDKD achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0·842 (95% CI 0·838–0·846) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·791–0·826 across external validation datasets. For differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, DeepDKD achieved an AUC of 0·906 (0·825–0·966) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·733–0·844 across external validation datasets. Historically, finding two-dimensional (2D) magnets is well known to be a difficult task due to the instability against thermal spin fluctuations. Metals are also normally considered poor thermoelectric (TE) materials. Combining intrinsic magnetism in two dimensions with conducting properties, one may expect to get the worst for thermoelectrics. However, we will show this is not always the case. Here, we investigate the spin-dependent TE properties of monolayer chromium pnictides (CrX, where X=P, As, Sb, and Bi) using first-principles calculations of electron- and phonon-energy dispersion, along with the Boltzmann transport formalism under an energy-dependent relaxation time approximation. All the CrX monolayers are dynamically stable and they also exhibit half metallicity with ferromagnetic ordering. Using the spin-valve setup with an antiparallel spin configuration, the half metallicity and ferromagnetism in monolayer CrX enable the manipulation of spin degrees of freedom to tune the TE figure of merit (ZT). At an optimized chemical potential and operating temperature of 500 K, the maximum ZT values (≈0.22, 0.12, and 0.09) with the antiparallel spin-valve setup in CrAs, CrSb, and CrBi improve up to almost twice the original values (ZT≈0.12, 0.08, and 0.05) without the spin-valve configuration. Only in CrP, which is the lightest species and less spin polarized among CrX, the maximum ZT (≈0.34) without the spin-valve configuration is larger than that (≈0.19) with the spin-valve one. We also find that, at 500 K, all the CrX monolayers possess exceptional TE power factors of about 0.02–0.08 W/m K2, which could be one of the best values among 2D conductors.

Background Transportation barriers significantly limit participation in breast cancer screening trials among Hispanic women, exacerbating disparities in breast cancer outcomes and underrepresentation in clinical research. Rideshare programs have emerged as a potential solution, but their long-term sustainability remains underexplored. Understanding sustainability capacity is critical to ensuring these programs can address structural barriers, promote health equity, and improve outcomes for underserved populations. The aim of this study is to evaluate sustainability capacity of a no-cost rideshare program and to identify potential strategies to support sustainability. Methods This explanatory, sequential, mixed-methods study evaluated the sustainability capacity of a no-cost rideshare program aimed at increasing Hispanic women’s participation in the Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (TMIST). Analyses and data integration were guided by the Capacity for Sustainability Framework. Average domain scores on the program Sustainability Assessment Tool (PSAT) survey were calculated ranging from 1 to 7 with higher scores indicating higher levels for each domain, and structured interviews were analyzed using a rapid qualitative approach. PSAT and interview findings were integrated using a joint display. Results Survey responses (N=37) indicated strengths in environmental support (mean score: 5.4) and partnerships (6.0), but challenges in funding stability (4.2) and strategic planning (4.5). Interview findings emphasized the importance of program champions and collaborative partnerships, while highlighting gaps in securing diverse funding sources and engaging institutional leadership in strategic planning. Participants identified opportunities to strengthen communication, evaluate program impact, and adapt processes to meet evolving needs. Learning activities are an indicator of the learner's desire to learn during the learning process. The pattern of learner action is related to learning activities. In this case, in extracting the learning process, it is necessary to collect a lot of data through analysis of the learning process. The purpose of this study is to recommend and report the performance of an activity tracking system equipped with visual artifacts as an educational data mining approach to analyze action patterns when learners complete the arrangement of program code lines in each programming problem. In this study, data were taken from activity recordings when learners used interactive learning media for a basic programming subject called TOLSYASUPI-EduMed which had problem-solving learning models embedded in their interactions. Learning Analytics is used as a method of this research and data relationships from learner actions during the learning process using the “if-then” rule. Log data is used for recording and detecting activities carried out by learners. We confirm that the results of the study are based on the findings of the data relationship that if the lines of program code are too long (more than five lines) then almost all learners experience a bottleneck condition. The completion time of each question and the number of iterations in completing the program code lines for each question have also been recorded and have a pattern of connection between the data. The information that has been obtained is then forwarded to teachers or stakeholders as key information to make appropriate feedback to learners based on the results as a means of analyzing and evaluating the programming learning process.

Mesoporous Silica with a large mesopore channel was synthesized using the sol-gel method for dye adsorption. A dual template consisting of P123 and gelatin at different ratios was employed in the sol-gel synthesis to enhance surface area and mesopore diameter. Gelatin is a green pore directing agent that strengthens P123 thermal stability during the calcination of silicate gel. Optimization of P123:gelatin ratio to 1:0.02 increased the surface area of mesoporous silica to 561.9 m²/g and expanded the pore diameter to 10 nm. The large pore diameter and surface area enhanced methylene blue adsorption capacity to 363.63 mg/g. The adsorption of methylene blue on mesoporous silica follows the pseudo second-order kinetic and the Langmuir model. Regeneration studies using thermal and chemical treatments exhibited the potential of mesoporous silica as an adsorbent for multiple adsorption-desorption of dyes. © 2022 The Author(s)

We develop a method to efficiently construct phase diagrams using machine learning. Uncertainty sampling (US) in active learning is utilized to intensively sample around phase boundaries. Here, we demonstrate constructions of three known experimental phase diagrams by the US approach. Compared with random sampling, the US approach decreases the number of sampling points to about 20%. In particular, the reduction rate is pronounced in more complicated phase diagrams. Furthermore, we show that using the US approach, undetected new phases can be rapidly found, and smaller numbers of initial sampling points are sufficient. Thus, we conclude that the US approach is useful to construct complicated phase diagrams from scratch and will be an essential tool in materials science.

Background and hypothesis Previous studies show that people with severe mental illness (SMI) are at higher risk of COVID-19 mortality, however limited evidence exists regarding risk post-vaccination. We investigated COVID-19 mortality among people with schizophrenia and other SMIs before, during and after the UK vaccine roll-out. Study Design Using the Greater Manchester (GM) Care Record to access routinely collected health data linked with death records, we plotted COVID-19 mortality rates over time in GM residents with schizophrenia/psychosis, bipolar disorder (BD) and/or recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD) from February 2020 to September 2021. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare mortality risk (risk ratios;RRs) between people with SMI (N=190,188) and age-sex matched controls (N=760,752), adjusted for sociodemographic factors, pre-existing comorbidities and vaccination *** Results Mortality risks were significantly higher among people with SMI compared with matched controls, particularly among people with schizophrenia/psychosis (RR 3.14, CI 2.66-3.71) and/or BD (RR 3.17, CI 2.15-4.67). In adjusted models, the relative risk of COVID-19 mortality decreased, though remained significantly higher than matched controls for people with schizophrenia (RR 1.53, CI 1.24-1.88) and BD (RR 2.28, CI 1.49-3.49), but not recurrent MDD (RR 0.92, CI 0.78-1.09). People with SMI continued to show higher mortality rate ratios relative to controls throughout 2021, during vaccination roll-out. Conclusions People with SMI, notably schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, were at greater risk of COVID-19 mortality compared to matched controls. Despite population vaccination efforts that have prioritised people with SMI, disparities still remain in COVID-19 mortality for people with SMI.

This paper examines several widespread assumptions about artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning, that are often taken as factual premises in discussions on the future of patent law in the wake of 'artificial ingenuity'. The objective is to draw a more realistic and nuanced picture of the human-computer interaction in solving technical problems than where 'intelligent' systems autonomously yield inventions. A detailed technical perspective is presented for each assumption, followed by a discussion of pertinent uncertainties for patent law. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) frequently face class imbalance issues, especially in heterogeneous graphs. Existing GNNs often assume balanced class sizes, which isn’t true in many cases. Applying them directly to imbalanced data can lead to sub-optimal performance. Traditional oversampling methods, while effective, risk overfitting and face difficulties in reintegrating synthetic samples into the original graph. In this study, we introduce Framework of Imbalanced Node Classification on heterogeneous graph neural network with GAN (FincGAN), a new framework that utilizes oversampling techniques to address class imbalance in heterogeneous graphs. Instead of duplicating existing samples, FincGAN employs a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to create synthetic samples and uses deep learning-based edge generators to connect them back to the original graph. Our evaluations on spam user detection in the Amazon and Yelp Review datasets show that FincGAN outperforms baseline models in all essential metrics, including F-score and AUC-PRC score, showing its effectiveness in addressing class imbalance.
