Cell segmentation is a key step in medical image analysis and cell biology research, and is important in areas such as understanding cell behaviour, cancer detection and cell cycle analysis. This task is challenging due to the presence of overlap between cells and image noise. With the development of imaging techniques, the amount and quality of acquired cellular image data have increased significantly and even contain diverse information such as neuronal structures and blood vessels, which puts higher demands on segmentation techniques. Real rat brain cell images obtained using micro-optical slice tomography (MOST) contain complex and diverse information such as neuronal structure, cell morphology, and the distribution of blood vessels, demonstrating the characteristics of real biological samples, for which segmentation of the target region is more difficult. In order to solve these challenges, this paper proposes a new cell image segmentation method that combines watershed order differential feature extraction and fuzzy entropy spatial theory. Due to the complexity of image information, we first use traditional image enhancement techniques. Then feature extraction is performed and fuzzy entropy processing is added to achieve accurate identification of cell boundaries. Then distance transform and curvature analysis are added to further segment the cell clusters into individual cells while avoiding over-segmentation and missed detection. Experiments demonstrate that the method not only shows high performance on our dataset, but also validates our method on several publicly available cellular datasets respectively, proving that the segmentation algorithm shows great potential for segmentation on different types of cells. Future research will further optimise the model to improve segmentation performance on complex and irregularly shaped cells and explore the application of these methods to other types of medical image segmentation tasks.

Dynamic graphs (DG) describe dynamic interactions between entities in many practical scenarios. Most existing DG representation learning models combine graph convolutional network and sequence neural network, which model spatial-temporal dependencies through two different types of neural networks. However, this hybrid design cannot well capture the spatial-temporal continuity of a DG. In this paper, we propose a tensor graph convolutional network to learn DG representations in one convolution framework based on the tensor product with the following two-fold ideas: a) representing the information of DG by tensor form;b) adopting tensor product to design a tensor graph convolutional network modeling spatial-temporal feature simultaneously. LMD2F-Net: Layered Multi-Scale Dual-Branch Dual-Temporal Fusion Network for Medical Image Segmentation

Image segmentation techniques play a crucial role in medical image analysis, which is directly related to the diagnosis of diseases, the development of treatment plans, and the evaluation of efficacy. Although Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and transformer-based approaches have made significant progress in this area, the inherent complexity of medical images, including features such as low contrast, fuzzy boundaries, and noise, makes automated segmentation tasks still challenging. To address these issues, we propose LMD2F-Net, an innovative encoder-decoder architecture that cleverly fuses the multi-axis attention mechanism of MaxViT and the global context modelling capability of Swin Transformer through a two-branch structure. This combination not only enhances the model's ability to capture local features, but also improves the understanding of the global context. In the decoding stage, we propose the Multi-scale Bitemporal Fusion Module (MBFM), which further optimises the feature fusion through a multi-scale feature extraction and attention mechanism, and significantly improves the model's ability to identify and capture key features of medical images. In addition, we introduce the dual-level fusion (DLF) module, which acts as a bridge between the encoder and decoder to effectively integrate features at different levels through the cross-attention mechanism. Experimental results on several challenging medical image segmentation datasets show that LMD2F-Net outperforms existing methods in several evaluation metrics, especially in key metrics such as Dice similarity coefficient and Hausdorff distance, which demonstrate its superior performance. These findings confirm the potential of LMD2F-Net in improving the accuracy and robustness of medical image segmentation, providing a valuable reference for future research and clinical practice. © 2013 IEEE.

Gesture recognition plays a crucial role in a wide range of consumer electronics applications, including human-computer interaction and virtual reality, by enabling the identification and interpretation of human gestures. In recent times, WiFi-based gesture recognition has garnered significant attention due to its privacy protection and unobtrusive nature. However, this approach heavily depends on neural network-based models and is notably influenced by environmental conditions, such as specific location and orientation. To address these environmental impacts, we propose a network framework that leverages transfer learning and meta-learning. The primary focus is on utilizing transfer learning to train a convolutional neural network (ResNet) for feature extraction, enabling the extraction of domain-independent features specifically related to gestures, rather than being influenced by environmental factors. Additionally, we employ the meta-learning algorithm MAML to train the fully connected network for gesture classification. Following training, a small set of samples can be utilized for rapid adaptation to diverse domains, maintaining high accuracy across different domains to achieve cross-domain gesture recognition. Our performance evaluation is based on the Widar 3.0 dataset, encompassing both in-domain and cross-domain scenarios. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm surpasses Widar3.0 and WiGRUNT by approximately 7.9% and 1.12% in gesture recognition accuracy across all scenarios. © 2025 IEEE.

Write-ahead log and data encryption technologies are employed to ensure both crash consistency and data security for persistent memory (PM). The encryption/decryption of both data and log requests increase the memory request latency, degrading the system performance. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a novel log-aware memory encryption scheme to reduce encryption/decryption operations, without compromising data security. Specifically, redo log blocks are stored as ciphertext for their corresponding data blocks to avoid encryption/decryption of log data blocks when in-place update operations are applied to them. We further design a compact log record layout with fewer encryption metadata in log records to reduce logging traffic. Our simulation results show that the transaction throughput of the proposed design outperforms the baseline design and the state-of-the-art design by 87.3% and 55.3% on average, respectively. © 2021 IEEE.

Proving Linearizability of Concurrent Queues

Linearizability is a commonly accepted correctness criterion for concurrent data structures. Concurrent queues are among the most fundamental concurrent data structures. In this paper, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for proving linearizability of concurrent queues, which make use of linearization of dequeue operations. The verification conditions intuitively express the "FIFO" semantics of concurrent queues and can be verified just by reasoning about the happened-before order of operations. We have successfully applied the proof technique to prove several challenging concurrent queues. We believe that our proof technique can be extended to the concurrent data structures which have the ordering requirements when their elements are removed. © 2024 Codon Publications. This study proposes a new prairie dog optimization algorithm version called EPDO. This new version aims to address the issues of premature convergence and slow convergence that were observed in the original PDO algorithm. To improve performance, several modifications are introduced in EPDO. First, a dynamic opposite learning strategy is employed to increase the diversity of the population and prevent premature convergence. This strategy helps the algorithm avoid falling into local optima and promotes global optimization. Additionally, the Lévy dynamic random walk technique is utilized in EPDO. This modified Lévy flight with random walk reduces the algorithm’s running time for the test function’s ideal value, accelerating its convergence. The proposed approach is evaluated using 33 benchmark problems from CEC 2017 and compared against seven other comparative techniques: GWO, MFO, ALO, WOA, DA, SCA, and RSA. Numerical results demonstrate that EPDO produces good outcomes and performs well in solving benchmark problems. To further validate the results and assess reliability, the authors employ average rank tests, the measurement of alternatives, and ranking according to the compromise solution (MARCOS) method, as well as a convergence report of EPDO and other algorithms. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the EPDO algorithm is demonstrated by applying it to five design problems. The results indicate that EPDO achieves impressive outcomes and proves its capability to address practical issues. The algorithm performs well in solving benchmark and practical design problems, as supported by the numerical results and validation methods used in the study. © The Author(s) 2024.

This paper investigates an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted semantic communication network. The energy-limited ground users (GUs) provide semantic services to periodically generated raw data and a UAV relays the extracted semantic information to a base station (BS). Semantic extraction enhances data responsiveness and reduces the age-of-information (AoI) by transmitting only the most essential information. However, more complex semantic extraction increases energy consumption, making it easier for the GUs to deplete their energy. Therefore, we introduce a novel energy-efficient AoI (EAoI) metric to capture both information freshness and energy consumption of the GUs. We formulate a time-averaged EAoI minimization problem by jointly optimizing the GUs' scheduling, pre-extraction strategy, semantic control, computing resource allocation, and the UAV's trajectory. We further propose a semantic-aware joint pre-extraction and trajectory planning (Sem-JPT) algorithm to decompose the complex optimization problem into three subproblems, which are solved by a series of approximation methods. Simulation results demonstrate that semantic communication can reduce the overall EAoI by more than 18% compared with conventional bit-based communication. Moreover, the proposed Sem-JPT algorithm can maintain information freshness and prolong the GUs' lifetimes, outperforming existing baselines.

Considering the tumor aggressive nature and the significant changes in anatomical structure, aligning the preoperative and follow up scans of glioma patients remains a challenge due to the presence of regions with absent correspondence. To address this challenge, this work proposed a novel bidirectional unsupervised deformable image registration framework for image pairs with missing correspondence based on an auxiliary-image-aided intensity-consistency constraint (ICC) strategy. Specifically, for any fixed and moving image pairs, we introduced an auxiliary image and warped it directly to fixed/moving image or warped it twice through a transition of moving/fixed image. By comparing the difference between these warped images, the weighting maps to identify and exclude regions with absent correspondence between fixed and moving image pairs can be generated. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework, we combined it with several deep learning-based registration models and tested it on BraTS-Reg challenge dataset, the results demonstrated that the proposed ICC strategy can improve the registration performance for all the models, with the improvement of average target registration error (TRE) and success rate (SR) being up to 44.9% and 66.7%, respectively. Comparing against the best existing forward-backward consistency strategy for dealing with missing correspondence registration, our auxiliary-image-aided ICC strategy can also decrease average TRE by 2.9%, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed framework. The present work is not limited to the glioma images, it can be used to address the registration problems for any image pairs with absent correspondence or inconsistent intensity. © 2024 IEEE.

Traditional lithography techniques are currently facing challenges, including high costs and the susceptibility of mask plates to damage. This research aims to elucidate the feasibility and technical constraints of a novel diffraction lithography approach. This method can reduce the size and cost of lithography machines, break through existing technological barriers, and offer new possibilities for the future development of lithography machines. We have built a basic computational holographic lithography system utilizing a 405nm laser and validated the system using holograms obtained with both classical GS algorithm and a newly proposed method. With the GS holograms, patterns with 700nm features have been successfully exposed on the photoresist. With our new algorithms, multiple holograms for the same target pattern can be generated with different settings in the algorithm. Sequential exposure of those holograms resulted in continuous lines 500 nm wide with reduced speckle artifacts, which was about a 1.4-time improvement over the result from the GS algorithm. Future research will focus on optimizing and enhancing the experimental system and the hologram calculation methods to reduce the line widths further and improve the exposure pattern quality. © COPYRIGHT SPIE.
