Weak Multi-Label data Stream Classification Under Distribution Changes in Labels

Multi-label stream classification aims to address the challenge of dynamically assigning multiple labels to sequentially arrived instances. In real situations, only partial labels of instances can be observed due to the expensive human annotations, and the problem of label distribution changes arises from multiple labels in a streaming mode, but few existing works jointly consider such challenges. Motivated by this, we propose the problem of weak multi-label stream classification (WMSC) and an online classification algorithm robust to weak labels. Specifically, we incrementally update the margin-based model using information from both the past model and the current incoming instance with partially observed labels. To increase the robustness to weak labels, we first adjust the classification margin of negative labels using the label causality matrix, which is constructed by the conditional probability of label pairs. Second, we introduce the label prototype matrix to regulate the margin by controlling the weighting parameter of the slack term. Additionally, to handle the potential distribution changes in labels, we utilize the instance-specific threshold via online thresholding to perform binary classification, which is formulated as a regression problem. Finally, theoretical analysis and empirical experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of WMSC in classifying unobserved streaming instances. © 2015 IEEE.

Dual AAV Cluster-Assisted Maritime Physical-Layer Secure Communications via Collaborative Beamforming

Autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs) can be utilized as relay platforms to assist maritime wireless communications. However, complex channels and multipath effects at sea can adversely affect the quality of AAV transmitted signals. Collaborative beamforming (CB) can enhance the signal strength and range to assist the AAV relay for remote maritime communications. However, due to the open nature of AAV channels, security issue requires special consideration. This article proposes a dual AAV cluster-assisted system via CB to achieve physical-layer security in maritime wireless communications. Specifically, one AAV cluster forms a maritime AAV-enabled virtual antenna array (MUVAA) relay to forward data signals to the remote legitimate vessel, and the other AAV cluster forms an MUVAA jammer to send jamming signals to the remote eavesdropper. In this system, we formulate a secure and energy-efficient maritime communication multiobjective optimization problem (SEMCMOP) to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the legitimate vessel, minimize the SINR of the eavesdropping vessel and minimize the total flight energy consumption of AAVs. Since the SEMCMOP is an NP-hard and large-scale optimization problem, we propose an improved swarm intelligence optimization algorithm with chaotic solution initialization and hybrid solution update strategies to solve the problem. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other comparison algorithms, and it can achieve more efficient signal transmission by using the CB-based method. © 2014 IEEE.

Android malware authors often use packers to evade analysis. Although many unpacking tools have been proposed, they face two significant challenges: 1) They are easily impeded by anti-analysis techniques employed by packers, preventing efficient collection of hidden Dex data. 2) They are typically designed to unpack a specific packer and cannot handle malware packed with mixed packers. Consequently, many packed malware samples evade detection. To bridge this gap, we propose Gupacker , a novel generalized unpacking framework. Gupacker offers a generic solution for first-generation holistic packer by customizing the Android system source code. It identifies the type of packer and selects an appropriate unpacking function, constructs a deeper active call chain to achieve generic unpacking of second-generation function extraction packers, and uses JNI function and instruction monitoring to handle third-generation virtual obfuscation packer. On this basis, we counteract a diverse array of anti-analysis techniques. We conduct extensive experiments on 5K packed Android malware samples, comparing Gupacker with 2 commercial and 4 state-of-the-art academic unpacking tools. The results demonstrate that Gupacker significantly improves the efficiency of Android malware unpacking with acceptable system overhead. We analyze real packed applications based on Gupacker and found several are second-packed by attackers, including WPS for Android, with tens of millions of users. We receive and responsibly report 13 0day vulnerabilities and also assist in the remediation of all vulnerabilities. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

Optimizing mechanical strength and thermal stability of sisal fiber-plastic composites by high-temperature treatment

In this experiment, high-temperature polyethylene terephthalate (PT) was mixed with epoxy resin (ER) that had been thinned with acetone. Sisal fibers were coated with the resulting product. Composites of Coated treated sisal fibre-reinforced PT (CTSF-PT) were made using a constant fiber loading of 10 wt% and processing temperatures of 230, 250, and 270ºC. The fibers were treated with NaOH. These composites were then characterized for thermal, mechanical and morphological performances. When comparing findings obtained at 250 and 270ºC, the optimal processing temperature was found to be 230ºC. This temperature resulted in the best thermal and mechanical properties, and excellent interfacial adhesion among the coated fibers and the PT. In comparison to the uncoated SF, the coated composites showed a 9.5% reduction in degradation onset temperature and a 13% improvement in decomposition temperature following resin coating, according to thermogravimetric analysis. The CSF-PT composites surpassed the uncoated composites by 2.18% and 2.8% in terms of glass transition (Tg) and melting temperature (Tm) measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), with peak values at 122.2 °C and 265.1 °C, respectively. Coated Sisal-reinforced PT (CSF-PT) and coated-treated PT (CTSF-PT) composites outperformed raw Sisal (SF-PT) composites in terms of overall qualities and morphological properties, regardless of processing temperature. Applying resin to natural fibers enhances their heat resistance and the bond between the coated fibers and the plastic matrix, making them better suited for engineering plastic composites. Applications involving high temperatures, such as construction and automotive industries are well-suited to the resulting composites. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

An Evolutionary Multitasking Algorithm for Efficient Multiobjective Recommendations

Represented by evolutionary algorithms and swarm intelligence algorithms, nature-inspired metaheuristics have been successfully applied to recommender systems and amply demonstrated effectiveness, in particular, for multiobjective recommendation. Owing to the population-based search paradigm, these algorithms can produce a number of recommendation lists, making diverse tradeoffs between multiple metrics and meeting the requirements of accuracy, novelty, diversity, and other user preferences. However, these algorithms are criticized for the low efficiency of the optimization process, especially when the number of users is large. To address this issue, this article proposes an evolutionary multitasking-based recommendation method, where each task corresponds to a user and all the tasks are optimized simultaneously, thus highly improving the efficiency of recommendation. To enhance the convergence speed, all the users are divided into multiple populations according to the similarity between their preferences, where each population evolves with internal knowledge transfer between users, and all the populations evolve with external knowledge transfer between populations. Experimental results on various datasets verify that the proposed method can better balance between multiple metrics than classical and deep neural network-based recommendation methods and exhibits significantly higher efficiency than evolutionary multiobjective optimization-based recommendation methods. © 2024 IEEE. The difficulty with dynamic and heterogeneous natured edge computing environments is resource provisioning. Reinforcement Learning (RL) can be promising to solve the problems of resource allocation under conditions of dynamics and complexity. This research work presents a novel DDPG-based (Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient) approach for optimizing the dynamics of resource allocation in edge computing environments by exploiting the CRAWDAD KAIST-WIBRO dataset for the proposed model. This approach implements a neural network that learns the optimal policies of allocations with dynamism towards new changes in workloads and resource availabilities. In order to test the performance of this method, conducted several simulations over real-world workload and resource data, mapping the parameters like rewards and variation in episodes. The simulation results indicate that proposed approach performs superior compared to traditional heuristic-based approaches as well as other RL algorithms for resource usage, response time, and energy efficiency. This proposed approach permits optimized resource utilization along with quality of service, of paramount importance in executing complex and demanding applications at the edge computing environment. © 2025 IEEE.

Multi-Modal Relation Extraction (MMRE) plays a key role in various multimedia applications including, recommendation and information retrieval systems. MMRE aims to extract the semantic relation between entities by leveraging context from a text-image pair. By utilizing context from images, the challenge of learning from noisy images in MMRE emerges as a research problem by itself. For instance, subtle variations in similar images can act as noise and potentially impact the predictions made by MMRE models. To tackle this problem, current work utilizes attention mechanisms to fuse relevant text and image features or devise data augmentation techniques (e.g., via generative models) to improve generalization. However, the current performance still remains unsatisfactory. In an effort to improve upon the performance, we propose a Dual-Aspect Noise-based Regularization framework that encompasses two techniques: 1) noise removal through an adaptive gating mechanism, 2) fighting noise with noise to improve feature stability in the learning process. We find that combining these techniques encourages the model to focus on more relevant image features for MMRE. We carry out extensive experiments and demonstrate that our proposed model is further enhanced by exploring data augmentation techniques. This additional improvement leads the model to achieve state-of-the-art performance on the widely-used Multi-modal Neural Relation Extraction (MNRE) dataset, and show its effectiveness and generalizability on the Multi-Modal Named Entity Recognition task.

Personalized learner modeling uses learners’ historical behavior data to diagnose their cognitive abilities, a process known as Cognitive Diagnosis (CD). This is essential for web-based learning services such as learning resource recommendation and adaptive testing. However, prior studies have shown that CD models may unfairly correlate learners’ abilities with sensitive attributes (e.g., gender, region), leading to biased outcomes. While existing approaches mitigate this issue by decorrelating sensitive attributes from the modeling process, privacy concerns make collecting such attributes impractical. Furthermore, the presence of multiple sensitive attributes complicates fairness improvements. In this paper, we explore how to achieve fair personalized learner modeling without relying on any sensitive attribute input. We introduce a novel fairness objective tailored for personalized learner modeling and design a max-min strategy to facilitate both sensitive information inference and fair CD modeling. In the max step, we infer pseudo-labels by maximizing the fairness objective, while in the min step, we retrain the CD model by minimizing it. Additionally, we provide a theoretical guarantee that our framework reduces the upper bound of fairness generalization error. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly outperforms existing methods. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

How to Mitigate Information Loss in knowledge Graphs for GraphRAG: Leveraging Triple Context Restoration and Query-Driven Feedback

knowledge Graph (KG)-augmented Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently propelled significant advances in complex reasoning tasks, thanks to their broad domain knowledge and contextual awareness. Unfortunately, current methods often assume KGs to be complete, which is impractical given the inherent limitations of KG construction and the potential loss of contextual cues when converting unstructured text into entity-relation triples. In response, this paper proposes the Triple Context Restoration and Query-driven Feedback (TCR-QF) framework, which reconstructs the textual context underlying each triple to mitigate information loss, while dynamically refining the KG structure by iteratively incorporating query-relevant missing knowledge. Experiments on five benchmark question-answering datasets substantiate the effectiveness of TCR-QF in KG and LLM integration, where it achieves a 29.1% improvement in Exact Match and a 15.5% improvement in F1 over its state-of-the-art GraphRAG competitors. © 2025, CC BY.

Cross-modal retrieval is crucial in understanding latent correspondences across modalities. However, existing methods implicitly assume well-matched training data, which is impractical as real-world data inevitably involves imperfect alignments, i.e., noisy correspondences. Although some works explore similarity-based strategies to address such noise, they suffer from sub-optimal similarity predictions influenced by modality-exclusive information (MEI), e.g., background noise in images and abstract definitions in texts. This issue arises as MEI is not shared across modalities, thus aligning it in training can markedly mislead similarity predictions. Moreover, although intuitive, directly applying previous cross-modal disentanglement methods suffers from limited noise tolerance and disentanglement efficacy. Inspired by the robustness of information bottlenecks against noise, we introduce DisNCL, a novel information-theoretic framework for feature Disentanglement in Noisy Correspondence Learning, to adaptively balance the extraction of modality-invariant information (MII) and MEI with certifiable optimal cross-modal disentanglement efficacy. DisNCL then enhances similarity predictions in modality-invariant subspace, thereby greatly boosting similarity-based alleviation strategy for noisy correspondences. Furthermore, DisNCL introduces soft matching targets to model noisy many-to-many relationships inherent in multi-modal inputs for noise-robust and accurate cross-modal alignment. Extensive experiments confirm DisNCL’s efficacy by 2% average recall improvement. Mutual information estimation and visualization results show that DisNCL learns meaningful MII/MEI subspaces, validating our theoretical analyses. © 1992-2012 IEEE.
