This paper aims for the task of text-to-video retrieval, where given a query in the form of a natural-language sentence, it is asked to retrieve videos which are semantically relevant to the given query, from a great number of unlabeled videos. The success of this task depends on cross-modal representation learning that projects both videos and sentences into common spaces for semantic similarity computation. In this work, we concentrate on video representation learning, an essential component for text-to-video retrieval. Inspired by the reading strategy of humans, we propose a Reading-strategy Inspired Visual Representation Learning (RIVRL) to represent videos, which consists of two branches: a previewing branch and an intensive-reading branch. The previewing branch is designed to briefly capture the overview information of videos, while the intensive-reading branch is designed to obtain more in-depth information. Moreover, the intensive-reading branch is aware of the video overview captured by the previewing branch. Such holistic information is found to be useful for the intensive-reading branch to extract more fine-grained features. Extensive experiments on three datasets are conducted, where our model RIVRL achieves a new state-of-the-art on TGIF and VATEX. Moreover, on MSR-VTT, our model using two video features shows comparable performance to the state-of-the-art using seven video features and even outperforms models pre-trained on the large-scale HowTo100M dataset. Semimetal Contacts to Monolayer Semiconductor: Weak Metalization as an Effective Mechanism to Schottky Barrier Lowering

Recent experiment has uncovered semimetal bismuth (Bi) as an excellent electrical contact to monolayer MoS2 with ultralow contact resistance. The contact physics of the broader semimetal/monolayer-semiconductor family beyond Bi/MoS2, however, remains largely unexplored thus far. Here we perform a comprehensive first-principle density functional theory investigation on the electrical contact properties between six archetypal two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) semiconductors, i.e. MoS2, WS2, MoSe2, WSe2, MoTe2 and WTe2, and two representative types of semimetals, Bi and antimony (Sb). As Bi and Sb work functions energetically aligns well with the TMDC conduction band edge, Ohmic or nearly-Ohmic n-type contacts are prevalent. The interlayer distance of semimetal/TMDC contacts are significantly larger than that of the metal/TMDC counterparts, which results in only weak metalization of TMDC upon contact formation. Intriguingly, such weak metalization generates semimetal-induced gap states (MIGS) that extends below the conduction band minimum, thus offering an effective mechanism to reduce or eliminate the n-type Schottky barrier height (SBH) while still preserving the electronic structures of 2D TMDC. A modified Schottky-Mott rule that takes into account SMIGS, interface dipole potential, and Fermi level shifting is proposed, which provides an improved agreement with the DFT-simulated SBH. We further show that the tunneling-specific resistivity of Sb/TMDC contacts are generally lower than the Bi counterparts, thus indicating a better charge injection efficiency can be achieved through Sb contacts. Our findings reveal the promising potential of Bi and Sb as excellent companion electrode materials for advancing 2D semiconductor device technology. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Joint item recommendation and attribute inference: An adaptive graph convolutional network approach

In many recommender systems, users and items are associated with attributes, and users show preferences to items. The attribute information describes users’ (items’) characteristics and has a wide range of applications, such as user profiling, item annotation, and feature-enhanced recommendation. As annotating user (item) attributes is a labor intensive task, the attribute values are often incomplete with many missing attribute values. Therefore, item recommendation and attribute inference have become two main tasks in these platforms. Researchers have long converged that user (item) attributes and the preference behavior are highly correlated. Some researchers proposed to leverage one kind of data for the remaining task, and showed to improve performance. Nevertheless, these models either neglected the incompleteness of user (item) attributes or regarded the correlation of the two tasks with simple models, leading to suboptimal performance of these two tasks. To this end, in this paper, we define these two tasks in an attributed user-item bipartite graph, and propose an Adaptive Graph Convolutional Network (AGCN) approach for joint item recommendation and attribute inference. The key idea of AGCN is to iteratively perform two parts: 1) Learning graph embedding parameters with previously learned approximated attribute values to facilitate two tasks;2) Sending the approximated updated attribute values back to the attributed graph for better graph embedding learning. Therefore, AGCN could adaptively adjust the graph embedding learning parameters by incorporating both the given attributes and the estimated attribute values, in order to provide weakly supervised information to refine the two tasks. LadRa-Net: Locally-aware dynamic re-read attention net for sentence semantic matching

Sentence semantic matching requires an agent to determine the semantic relation between two sentences, which is widely used in various natural language tasks, such as Natural Language Inference (NLI), Paraphrase Identification (PI), and so on. Much recent progress has been made in this area, especially attention-based methods and pre-trained language model based methods. However, most of these methods focus on all the important parts in sentences in a static way and only emphasize how important the words are to the query, inhibiting the ability of attention mechanism. In order to overcome this problem and boost the performance of attention mechanism, we propose a novel dynamic re-read attention, which can pay close attention to one small region of sentences at each step and re-read the important parts for better sentence representations. Based on this attention variation, we develop a novel Dynamic Re-read Network (DRr-Net) for sentence semantic matching. Moreover, selecting one small region in dynamic re-read attention seems insufficient for sentence semantics, and employing pre-trained language models as input encoders will introduce incomplete and fragile representation problems. To this end, we extend DRr-Net to Locally-Aware Dynamic Re-read Attention Net (LadRa-Net), in which local structure of sentences is employed to alleviate the shortcoming of Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE) in pre-trained language models and boost the performance of dynamic reread attention. Extensive experiments on two popular sentence semantic matching tasks demonstrate that DRr-Net can significantly improve the performance of sentence semantic matching. Meanwhile, LadRa-Net is able to achieve better performance by considering the local structures of sentences. In addition, it is exceedingly interesting that some discoveries in our experiments are consistent with some findings of psychological research. © 2021, CC BY.

Recently, instead of pursuing high performance on classical evaluation metrics, the research focus of image captioning has shifted to generating sentences which are more vivid and stylized than human-written ones. However, there are still no applicable metrics which can judge how close the generated captions are to the human-written ones. In this paper, we propose a novel learning-based evaluation metric, namely Unpaired Image Captioning Evaluation (UICE), which can be trained to distinguish between human-written and generated captions. Unlike existing metrics, our UICE consists of two parts: the semantic alignment module measuring the semantic distance between extracted image features and caption meanings, and the syntactic discriminating module syntactically judging how human-like the candidate caption is. The semantic alignment module is implemented by mapping the image features and the word embedding into a unified tensor space. And the syntactic discriminating module is designed to be learning-based, and thereby can be trained to be stylized by users' own, fed with additional personalized corpus during the training process. Extensive experiments indicate that our metric can correctly judge the grammatical correctness of generated captions and the semantic consistency between captions and corresponding images.

Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is one of the fastest developing technologies in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which has made great contributions to improving traffic congestion and reducing traffic accidents. As it is deployed in an open environment, security and privacy are threatened to a certain extent. Moreover, there are huge data exchanges in high traffic areas, which require VANET system to improve computing efficiency while ensuring communication security. To solve the above issues, this paper proposes a cloud-assisted road condition monitoring (RCM) system. The trusted authority (TA) monitors the road conditions with the help of the cloud server. The vehicle collects the road condition information of the road section managed by the roadside unit (RU), and only the vehicles authorized by the administrative roadside unit can successfully upload the road condition reports to the cloud server. The cloud server divides the road condition reports into different equivalence classes, in this way to report the emergency to the TA when the reported quantity exceeds the threshold. Security analysis showed that the proposed RCM system can effectively protect the security and privacy of road condition reports in VANETs.

FortisAVQA and MAVEN: a Benchmark dataset and Debiasing Framework for Robust Multimodal Reasoning

Audio-Visual Question Answering (AVQA) is a challenging multimodal reasoning task requiring intelligent systems to answer natural language queries based on paired audio-video inputs accurately. However, existing AVQA approaches often suffer from overfitting to dataset biases, leading to poor robustness. Moreover, current datasets may not effectively diagnose these methods. To address these challenges, we first introduce a novel dataset, FortisAVQA, constructed in two stages: (1) rephrasing questions in the test split of the public MUSIC-AVQA dataset and (2) introducing distribution shifts across questions. The first stage expands the test space with greater diversity, while the second enables a refined robustness evaluation across rare, frequent, and overall question distributions. Second, we introduce a robust Multimodal Audio-Visual Epistemic Network (MAVEN) that leverages a multifaceted cycle collaborative debiasing strategy to mitigate bias learning. Experimental results demonstrate that our architecture achieves state-of-the-art performance on FortisAVQA, with a notable improvement of 7.81%. Extensive ablation studies on both datasets validate the effectiveness of our debiasing components. Additionally, our evaluation reveals the limited robustness of existing multimodal QA methods. We also verify the plug-and-play capability of our strategy by integrating it with various baseline models across both datasets. We study problems with stochastic uncertainty data on intervals for which the precise value can be queried by paying a cost. The goal is to devise an adaptive decision tree to find a correct solution to the problem in consideration while minimizing the expected total query cost. We show that sorting in this scenario can be performed in polynomial time, while finding the data item with minimum value seems to be hard. This contradicts intuition, since the minimum problem is easier both in the online setting with adversarial inputs and in the offline verification setting. However, the stochastic assumption can be leveraged to beat both deterministic and randomized approximation lower bounds for the online setting. Although some literature has been devoted to minimizing query/probing costs when solving uncertainty problems with stochastic input, none of them have considered the setting we describe. Our approach is closer to the study of query-competitive algorithms, and it gives a better perspective on the impact of the stochastic assumption. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Generated method of transcriptional regulatory networks remains an important research in biology. Many approaches have been proposed to construct transcriptional regulatory networks. However, with the increase of ChIP-seq and RNA-seq data, the speed of constructing transcriptional regulation networks is still a challenge. Moreover, parallel computing lacks application in constructing gene regulatory networks through the analysis of the relationships between transcription factors (TFs) and target genes (TGs). Therefore, in this paper, a parallel generated method of transcriptional regulatory networks was proposed. First, two datasets, Michigan Cancer Foundation – 7 (MCF-7) and Cardiomyocytes (CM) were applied. Then, a parallel method was used to generate transcriptional regulatory network with their transcription factors (TFs) and target genes (TGs). Finally, experimental results showed that 61% regulatory relations in MCF-7 were validated in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), while 29% results needed further experimental verification. Besides, 56% regulatory relations in CM were consistent with GEO, while 33% results were not yet verified. Furthermore, speed of parallel algorithm was faster than traditional serial algorithm in generating transcriptional regulatory networks. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A Survey on Accuracy-oriented Neural Recommendation: From Collaborative Filtering to Information-rich Recommendation

Influenced by the great success of deep learning in computer vision and language understanding, research in recommendation has shifted to inventing new recommender models based on neural networks. In recent years, we have witnessed significant progress in developing neural recommender models, which generalize and surpass traditional recommender models owing to the strong representation power of neural networks. In this survey paper, we conduct a systematic review on neural recommender models from the perspective of recommendation modeling with the accuracy goal, aiming to summarize this field to facilitate researchers and practitioners working on recommender systems. Specifically, based on the data usage during recommendation modeling, we divide the work into collaborative filtering and information-rich recommendation: 1) collaborative filtering, which leverages the key source of user-item interaction data;2) content enriched recommendation, which additionally utilizes the side information associated with users and items, like user profile and item knowledge graph;and 3) temporal/sequential recommendation, which accounts for the contextual information associated with an interaction, such as time, location, and the past interactions. After reviewing representative work for each type, we finally discuss some promising directions in this field. © 2021, CC BY.
