Nowadays, vision-based computing tasks play an important role in various real-world applications. However, many vision computing tasks, e.g. semantic segmentation, are usually computationally expensive, posing a challenge to the computing systems that are resource-constrained but require fast response speed. Therefore, it is valuable to develop accurate and real-time vision processing models that only require limited computational resources. To this end, we propose the Spatial-detail Guided Context Propagation Network (SGCPNet) for achieving real-time semantic segmentation. In SGCPNet, we propose the strategy of spatial-detail guided context propagation. It uses the spatial details of shallow layers to guide the propagation of the low-resolution global contexts, in which the lost spatial information can be effectively reconstructed. In this way, the need for maintaining high-resolution features along the network is freed, therefore largely improving the model efficiency. On the other hand, due to the effective reconstruction of spatial details, the segmentation accuracy can be still preserved. In the experiments, we validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed SGCPNet model. On the Citysacpes dataset, for example, our SGCPNet achieves 69.5% mIoU segmentation accuracy, while its speed reaches 178.5 FPS on 768×1536 images on a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GPU card. Dual encoding for video retrieval by text

This paper attacks the challenging problem of video retrieval by text. In such a retrieval paradigm, an end user searches for unlabeled videos by ad-hoc queries described exclusively in the form of a natural-language sentence, with no visual example provided. Given videos as sequences of frames and queries as sequences of words, an effective sequence-to-sequence cross-modal matching is crucial. To that end, the two modalities need to be first encoded into real-valued vectors and then projected into a common space. In this paper we achieve this by proposing a dual deep encoding network that encodes videos and queries into powerful dense representations of their own. Our novelty is two-fold. First, different from prior art that resorts to a specific single-level encoder, the proposed network performs multi-level encoding that represents the rich content of both modalities in a coarse-to-fine fashion. Second, different from a conventional common space learning algorithm which is either concept based or latent space based, we introduce hybrid space learning which combines the high performance of the latent space and the good interpretability of the concept space. Dual encoding is conceptually simple, practically effective and end-to-end trained with hybrid space learning. "Did You Hear That?" Learning to Play Video Games from Audio Cues

Game-playing AI research has focused for a long time on learning to play video games from visual input or symbolic information. However, humans benefit from a wider array of sensors which we utilise in order to navigate the world around us. In particular, sounds and music are key to how many of us perceive the world and influence the decisions we make. In this paper, we present initial experiments on game-playing agents learning to play video games solely from audio cues. We expand the Video Game Description Language to allow for audio specification, and the General Video Game AI framework to provide new audio games and an API for learning agents to make use of audio observations. We analyse the games and the audio game design process, include initial results with simple Q-Learning agents, and encourage further research in this area. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Feature representation learning is a research focus in domain adaptation. Recently, due to the fast training speed, the marginalized Denoising Autoencoder (mDA) as a standing deep learning model has been widely utilized for feature representation learning. However, the training of mDA suffers from the lack of nonlinear relationship and does not explicitly consider the distribution discrepancy between domains. To address these problems, this paper proposes a novel method for feature representation learning, namely Nonlinear cross-domain Feature learning based Dual Constraints (NFDC), which consists of kernelization and dual constraints. Firstly, we introduce kernelization to effectively extract nonlinear relationship in feature representation learning. Secondly, we design dual constraints including Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD) and Manifold Regularization (MR) in order to minimize distribution discrepancy during the training process. Experimental results show that our approach is superior to several state-of-the-art methods in domain adaptation tasks.

Dense residual network: Enhancing global dense feature flow for character recognition

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), such as Dense Convolutional Network (DenseNet), have achieved great success for image representation learning by capturing deep hierarchical features. However, most existing network architectures of simply stacking the convolutional layers fail to enable them to fully discover local and global feature information between layers. In this paper, we mainly investigate how to enhance the local and global feature learning abilities of DenseNet by fully exploiting the hierarchical features from all convolutional layers. Technically, we propose an effective convolutional deep model termed Dense Residual Network (DRN) for the task of optical character recognition. To define DRN, we propose a refined residual dense block (r-RDB) to retain the ability of local feature fusion and local residual learning of original RDB, which can reduce the computing efforts of inner layers at the same time. After fully capturing local residual dense features, we utilize the sum operation and several r-RDBs to construct a new block termed global dense block (GDB) by imitating the construction of dense blocks to adaptively learn global dense residual features in a holistic way. Finally, we use two convolutional layers to design a down-sampling block to reduce the global feature size and extract more informative deeper features. Projection-free optimization via different variants of the Frank-Wolfe (FW) method has become one of the cornerstones in optimization for machine learning since in many cases the linear minimization oracle is much cheaper to implement than projections and some sparsity needs to be preserved. In a number of applications, e.g. Poisson inverse problems or quantum state tomography, the loss is given by a self-concordant (SC) function having unbounded curvature, implying absence of theoretical guarantees for the existing FW methods. We use the theory of SC functions to provide a new adaptive step size for FW methods and prove global convergence rate O(1/k), k being the iteration counter. Finding optimal Stackelberg production strategies: How to produce in times of war?

Inspired by a military context, we study a Stackelberg production game where a country’s government, the leader, wants to maximize the production of military assets. The leader does so by allocating his resources among a set of production facilities. His opponent, the follower, observes this allocation and tries to destroy the associated production as much as possible by allocating his destructive resources, for example bombs, among these facilities. In this paper, we identify a follower’s optimal strategy. For the leader, we show that an optimal production strategy can be found in the class of so-called seried-balanced strategies. Endurable SSD-Based Read Cache for Improving the Performance of Selective Restore from Deduplication Systems

Deduplication has been commonly used in both enterprise storage systems and cloud storage. To overcome the performance challenge for the selective restore operations of deduplication systems, solid-state-drive-based （i.e., SSD-based） re^d cache cm, be deployed for speeding up by caching popular restore contents dynamically. Unfortunately, frequent data updates induced by classical cache schemes （e.g., LRU and LFU） significantly shorten SSDs＇ lifetime while slowing down I/O processes in SSDs. To address this problem, we propose a new solution -- LOP-Cache to greatly improve tile write durability of SSDs as well as I/O performance by enlarging the proportion of long-term popular （LOP） data among data written into SSD-based cache. LOP-Cache keeps LOP data in the SSD cache for a long time period to decrease the number of cache replacements. Furthermore, it prevents unpopular or unnecessary data in deduplication containers from being written into the SSD cache. We implemented LOP-Cache in a prototype deduplication system to evaluate its pertbrmance. Our experimental results indicate that LOP-Cache shortens the latency of selective restore by an average of 37.3% at the cost of a small SSD-based cache with only 5.56% capacity of the deduplicated data. Importantly, LOP-Cache improves SSDs＇ lifetime by a factor of 9.77. The evidence shows that LOP-Cache offers a cost-efficient SSD-based read cache solution to boost performance of selective restore for deduplication systems.

A large amount of data streams in the form of texts and images has been emerging in many real-world applications. These data streams often present the characteristics such as multi-labels, label missing and new class emerging, which makes the existing data stream classification algorithm face the challenges in precision space and time performance. This is because, on the one hand, it is known that data stream classification algorithms are mostly trained on all labeled single-class data, while there are a large amount of unlabeled data and few labeled data due to it is difficult to obtain labels in the real world. On the other hand, many of existing multi-label data stream classification algorithms mostly focused on the classification with all labeled data and without emerging new classes, and there are few semi-supervised methods. Therefore, this paper proposes a semi-supervised ensemble classification algorithm for multi-label data streams based on co-training. Firstly, the algorithm uses the sliding window mechanism to partition the data stream into data chunks. On the former w data chucks, the multi-label semi-supervised classification algorithm COINS based on co-training is used to training a base classifier on each chunk, and then an ensemble model with w COINS classifiers is generated ensemble model to adapt to the environment of data stream with a large number of unlabeled data. Meanwhile, a new class emerging detection mechanism is introduced, and the w+1 data chunk is predicted by the ensemble model to detect whether there is a new class emerging. When a new label is detected, the classifier is retrained on the current data chunk, and the ensemble model is updated. Finally, experimental results on five real data sets show that: as compared with the classical algorithms, the proposed approach can improve the classification accuracy of multi-label data streams with a large number of missing labels and new labels emerging.

Ludii and XCSP: Playing and solving logic puzzles

Many of the famous single-player games, commonly called puzzles, can be shown to be NP-Complete. Indeed, this class of complexity contains hundreds of puzzles, since people particularly appreciate completing an intractable puzzle, such as Sudoku, but also enjoy the ability to check their solution easily once it's done. For this reason, using constraint programming is naturally suited to solve them. In this paper, we focus on logic puzzles described in the Ludii general game system and we propose using the XCSP formalism in order to solve them with any CSP solver. Copyright © 2019, The Authors.
