Validating assertions before adding them to a knowledge graph is an essential part of its creation and maintenance. Due to the sheer size of knowledge graphs, automatic fact-checking approaches have been developed. These approaches rely on reference knowledge to decide whether a given assertion is correct. Recent hybrid approaches achieve good results by including several knowledge sources. However, it is often impractical to provide a sheer quantity of textual knowledge or generate embedding models to leverage these hybrid approaches. We present FaVEL, an approach that uses algorithm selection and ensemble learning to amalgamate several existing fact-checking approaches that rely solely on a reference knowledge graph and, hence, use fewer resources than current hybrid approaches. For our evaluation, we create updated versions of two existing datasets and a new dataset dubbed FaVEL-DS. Our evaluation compares our approach to 15 fact-checking approaches—including the state-of-the-art approach HybridFC—on 3 datasets. Our results demonstrate that FaVEL outperforms all other approaches significantly by at least 0.04 in terms of the area under the ROC curve. By analyzing data gathered through Online Learning(OL)systems,data mining can be used to unearth hidden relationships between topics and trends in student ***,in this paper,we show how data mining techniques such as clustering and association rule algorithms can be used on historical data to develop a unique recommendation system *** our implementation,we utilize historical data to generate association rules specifically for student test marks below a threshold of 60%.By focusing on marks below this threshold,we aim to identify and establish associations based on the patterns of weakness observed in the past ***,we leverage K-means clustering to provide instructors with visual representations of the generated *** strategy aids instructors in better comprehending the information and associations produced by the *** clustering helps visualize and organize the data in a way that makes it easier for instructors to analyze and gain insights,enabling them to support the verification of the relationship between *** can be a useful tool to deliver better feedback to students as well as provide better insights to instructors when developing their *** paper further shows a prototype implementation of the above-mentioned concepts to gain opinions and insights about the usability and viability of the proposed system.

Assessing the performance of machine translation systems is of critical value, especially to languages with lower resource availability. Due to the large evaluation effort required by the translation task, studies often compare new systems against single systems or commercial solutions. Consequently, determining the best-performing system for specific languages is often unclear. This work benchmarks publicly available translation systems across 4 datasets and 26 languages, including low-resource languages. We consider both effectiveness and efficiency in our evaluation. Our results are made public through BENG-a FAIR benchmarking platform for Natural Language Generation tasks. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. With the advances in microfluidics, electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) chips have widely been applied to various biological and chemical laboratory protocols. Glass-based EWOD chips with nonregular electrodes are proposed, which allow more reliable droplet operations and facilitate the integration of optical sensors for many biochemical applications. Furthermore, nonregular electrode designs are utilized in EWOD chips, e.g., interdigitated electrodes for more reliable droplet manipulation, custom shaped electrodes for specific applications like concentric heating, etc. However, due to the technical challenges of fabricating multilayer interconnection on the glass substrate, e.g., unreliable process and high cost, both control electrodes and wires are fabricated with a single-layer configuration, which poses significant challenges to pin selection for nonregular electrodes. In this article, we propose a minimum-cost flow-based routing algorithm called NR-Router+ that features efficient and robust routing for single-layer EWOD chips with nonregular electrodes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that overcomes the aforementioned challenges. We construct a minimum-cost flow algorithm to generate optimal routing paths followed by a light-weight model to handle flow capacity. A grid reduction strategy is proposed to reduce the computational overhead. Additionally, a flow collocation algorithm based on integer linear programming is presented to efficiently prevent wire overlapping. Experimental results show that NR-Router+ achieves 100% routability while minimizing wirelength with shorter run time. Moreover, NR-Router+ can generate mask files feasible for manufacturing via adjustments of design parameters, thus demonstrating its robustness and efficiency. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

This paper discusses the challenges of applying a data analytics pipeline for a large volume of data as can be found in natural and life sciences. To address this challenge, we attempt to elaborate an approach for an improved detection of outliers. We discuss an approach for outlier quantification for bathymetric data. As a use case, we selected ocean science (multibeam) data to calculate the outlierness for each data point. The benefit of outlier quantification is a more accurate estimation of which outliers should be removed or further analyzed. To shed light on the subject, this paper is structured as follows: first, a summary of related works on outlier detection is provided. The usefulness for a structured approach of outlier quantification is then discussed using multibeam data. This is followed by a presentation of the challenges for a suitable solution, and the paper concludes with a summary. © 2022, The Author(s).

Auction-based Federated Learning (AFL) is a burgeoning research area. However, existing bidding strategies for AFL data consumers (DCs) primarily focus on maximizing expected accumulated utility, disregarding the more complex goal of revenue maximization. They also only consider winning bids, leading to biased estimates by overlooking information from losing bids. To address these issues, we propose a Bias-free Revenue-maximizing Federated bidding strategy for DCs in AFL (BR-FEDBIDDER). Our theoretical exploration of the relationships between Return on Investment (ROI), bid costs, and utility, and their impact on overall revenue underscores the complexity of maximizing revenue solely by prioritizing ROI enhancement. Leveraging these insights, BR-FEDBIDDER optimizes bid costs with any given ROI constraint. In addition, we incorporate an auxiliary task of winning probability estimation into the framework to achieve bias-free learning by leveraging bid records from historical bid requests, including both winning and losing ones. Extensive experiments on six widely used benchmark datasets show that BR-FEDBIDDER outperforms eight state-of-the-art methods, surpassing the best-performing baseline by 5.66%, 6.08% and 2.44% in terms of the total revenue, ROI, and test accuracy of the resulting FL models, respectively. © 2024 International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence.
