SHAVER, RBRobert B. Shaver (North Dakota State Water Commission
Water Appropriation Division 900 East Blvd. Bismarck ND 58505–0187) received B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan. He is currently employed as a hydrologist manager with the North Dakota State Water Commission in Bismarck North Dakota. His principal duties involve the development of management programs for the allocation of ground water in glaciofluvial aquifers throughout North Dakota. His current research interests include application of hydrochemical data in the analysis of ground water flow systems.

Ground water samples for a hydrochemical investigation were collected from 92 observation wells completed in a shallow, unconfined aquifer in southeastern North Dakota. The samples showed predominantly an increase in HCO3- (positive bias) and both a pH decrease (positive bias) and a pH increase (negative bias) from field to lab. Positive pH bias generally was associated with ground water characterized by dissolved-solids concentrations less than 400 mg/L. Negative pH bias generally was associated with ground water characterized by dissolved-solids concentrations greater than 400 mg/L. Observed HCO3- bias from field to lab slightly distorted ion balance distribution. Excess anions greater than 2 percent generally corresponded to increased HCO3- from field to lab. Observed HCO3- and pH bias significantly distorted the distribution of calcite saturation indices. Samples with dissolved-solids concentrations less than 400 mg/L that generally showed a positive pH bias had a mean change in calcite saturation index of -0.214 (toward undersaturation). Samples with dissolved-solids concentrations greater than 400 mg/L that generally showed a negative pH bias had a mean change in calcite saturation of +0.132 (toward oversaturation). Calcite saturation indices were much more sensitive to observed pH bias than to observed HCO3- bias. Linear regression analysis indicates 96 percent of the variability in calcite saturation index change from field to lab is attributed to change in pH from field to lab. Field pH should be used to compute calcite saturation index.

We have developed an expert system for determining manufacturing order in the hot-rolling process of seamless steel pipe based on the knowledge engineering. The purpose of this expert system is to decide optimal manufacturing order, satisfying various requirements. This kind of decision making is one of the synthesis type problems which are known as the hardest one for a practical use. We paid close attention to the professionals for their ability of optimized problem solving using various broadened and unstructured standards, and then attended to systematize with the knowledge-based system technology. In this development, we confirmed effectiveness of the expert system in relation to problems involved in sequence composition, and developed its inference method.

The application of an expert system to plan coal blending for coke production is described. The object of this coal blending plan is to produce coke of stable quality at low cost while maintaining the optimum use of the coal yard. The monthly coal blending planning work previously depended on an experienced operator's expertise, and the expert system approach has helped to reduce planning time and has standardized the planning method. The effectiveness of the expert system in comparison with linear programming was confirmed by the following advantages: 1. Every fact that was difficult to express by a fixed formula could be expressed as a rule. 2. Calculation time was shortened. 3. Every solution could be derived by limiting its searching scope.

A closed-loop degaussing technique for MCM (mine countermeasure) class vessels has been developed and tested on a minesweeper engine. The system was designed to accurately predict and degauss the off-board magnetic field signatures from measurements taken on-board a non-magnetic hull naval signature prediction algorithm have been investigated. An on-board sensor configuration, that requires only four single axis gradiometers, has been shown to accurately predict the magnetic signatures of the full-scale engine.
