In this paper we introduce a new technique designed to optimize stereoscopic depth perception of small targets embedded in 3D scenes. Central to the technique is a modified version of an image processing algorithm originally designed for gray scale image enhancement. This has been adapted and modified to adjust the stereoscopic depth in a 3D scene while mostly preserving other depth cues such as perspective, texture gradients, size gradients and occlusion. An experimental study to evaluate the algorithm showed that enhanced stereoscopic depth can enable the detection of targets that would otherwise be missed.

We introduce the piecewise-linear Haar (PLHaar) transform, a reversible n-bit to n-bit transform that is based on the Haar wavelet transform. PLHaar is continuous, while all current n-bit to n-bit methods are not, and is therefore uniquely usable with both lossy and lossless methods (e.g. image compression). PLHaar has both integer and continuous (i.e. non-discrete) forms. By keeping the coefficients to n bits PLHaar is particularly suited for use in hardware environments where channel width is limited, such as digital video channels and graphics hardware.

It is common for 3D visualization systems to provide multiple points of view to a user, but there have been many solutions to the problem of linking these views so that users can understand the spatial relationships between them. Toward developing guidelines for view-linking devices, we have carried out two experiments that compare the utility of three different classes of linking devices: a directional proxy, tethers from one view to another, and a track-up map coupling. The task we apply them to is what we call the multi-perspective identification task: subjects are asked to identify an item seen in a local, forward-looking view in the context of a global, overhead view. Our results indicate that the directional proxy is the most beneficial device, and that the track-up map coupling is also beneficial. The results suggest that tethers provide little benefit. The results also suggest that when multiple local views are present, it may be beneficial to emphasize one window as being of primary interest.

In this paper, we describe an empirical investigation of the utility of several perceptual properties of motion in information-dense displays applied to notification. Notification relates to awareness and how dynamic information is communicated from the system to the user. Key to a notification technique is how easily the notification is detected and identified. Our initial studies show that icons with simple motions, termed moticons , are effective coding techniques for notification and in fact are often better detected and identified than colour and shape codes, especially in the periphery. A subsequent experiment compared the detection and distraction effects of different motion types in several task conditions. Our results reveal how different attributes of motion contribute to detection, identification and distraction and provide initial guidelines on how motion codes can be designed to support awareness in information-rich interfaces while minimizing unwanted side effects of distraction and irritation.
