The scaffolding of a complete lattice L of finite length was introduced by Rudolf Wille in 1976 as a relative subsemilattice of L that can be constructed using subdirect decomposition. The lattice is uniquely defined by its scaffolding and can be reconstructed from it. Using bonds, we demonstrate how the scaffolding can be constructed from a given formal context and thereby extend the notion of the scaffolding to doubly founded lattices. Further, we explain the creation of a suitable graphical representation of the scaffolding from the context.

Ontology-based information integration systems have been proposed to solve the problem of combining data residing at autonomous and heterogeneous sources. For such ontology based solutions to succeed in an industrial context, the integration ontology and mappings need to be managed to allow them to evolve as the data sources evolve. This research has developed a technique to support the management of ontology-based integration systems by modeling the dependencies that arise in the system. This paper describes the management problem, a solution, an industrial case study using dependency modeling and an evaluation mechanism.

Sometimes it is not possible for a user to state a retrieval goal explicitly a priori. One common way to support such exploratory retrieval scenarios is to give an overview using a neighborhood-preserving projection of the collection onto two dimensions. However, neighborhood cannot always be preserved in the projection because of the dimensionality reduction. Further, there is usually more than one way to look at a collection of images - and diversity grows with the number of features that can be extracted. We describe an adaptive zoomable interface for exploration that addresses both problems: It makes use of a complex non-linear multi-focal zoom lens that exploits the distorted neighborhood relations introduced by the projection. We further introduce the concept of facet distances representing different aspects of image similarity. Given user-specific weightings of these aspects, the system can adapt to the user's way of exploring the collection by manipulation of the neighborhoods as well as the projection.

While the polling or request/response paradigm adopted by many network and systems management approaches form the backbone of modern monitoring and management systems, the most important and interesting events, faults, alerts and log messages arrive at the management agent in a push-based asynchronous manner. However, in the management infrastructure itself, at the point where events are initially processed and matched to subscribers, there have been few attempts to identify relationships or dependencies between events. This means that most of this burden is placed on the management application, or indeed the managers themselves. This research investigates enhancing the expressiveness of a knowledge-based networking middleware with the addition of three temporal operators to be used in subscriptions to select matching events. A prototype design is presented and a number of implementations are compared. The approach is also motivated using two scenarios for temporal correlation of warnings and faults in managed networks. The effect on the scalability of the extended knowledge-based network system is also evaluated.

With the advent of Web 2.0, as web service composition gets easier, there is a trend towards nonexpert users not just consuming information and services, but also providing, aggregating, composing and eventually managing their own information, services and resources. However non-expert users need to manage their composed services in a way they can understand. Policy-based management promises the ability to control services in a consistent manner via high-level declarative directives, constraints and goals. However, a significant drawback of policy-based management for complex systems remains the lack of an automated mechanism to resolve the meaning of high-level goals so they can be enforced [1,2]. We propose an approach to compose the available heterogeneous management interfaces of underlying constituent services to produce a coherent higher-level management interface for the composite service. This composed management interface can then be presented to the user at a level of abstraction that corresponds to non-expert user's needs thereby allowing the user to express their specific requirements. Hence the user can manage their composite service, in a manner tailored to them, without the burden of needing to understand how to manage each constituent service. This supports lower-cost user-initiated management, without access to IT experts, thereby increasing productivity and lowering operating costs.

Federated policy systems are required to support the complexity and organizational heterogeneity of the modern marketplace. The Community-based Policy Management System (CBPMS) is such a distributed policy management approach. It utilizes a tree-based capability authority model to partition and delegate federated capabilities. However CBPMS delegation chains have limitations such as: performance overheads due to distributed rule evaluation, threats from malformed or malicious federated principals and a lack of flexibility with respect to delegation chain reduction or capability authority re-partitioning. In this paper we introduce a trust management model for CBPMS that addresses all of these issues.. A brief security analysis is presented and a telecommunications service management use case described.

An open research question is: how should such ontology mappings be represented. In recent years several proposals for an ontology mapping representation have been published, but till today no format is officially standardized or generally accepted in the community. In this paper we will present a new evaluation framework for ontology mapping representations for a pragmatic state of the art overview of their characteristics. In particular we are interested how current ontology mapping representations can support the management of ontology mappings (sharing, re-use, alteration) as well as how suitable they are for different mapping tasks.

Most Adaptive Hypermedia Systems today focus on providing an adaptive portal or presentation/application through which adaptive retrieved content is delivered. Moreover the content used by such adaptive systems tends to be handcrafted for adaptivity, i.e. from closed corpus repositories. If adaptive hypermedia is to become more mainstream we need the ability to embed adaptive information retrieval and composition techniques within existing Web-based Content Management Systems (WCMS) e.g. Wiki, Drupal. However the effort and expense in fundamentally re-engineering such WCMS or developing completely new adaptive WCMS, is very high. This research explores the architectural and technical issues involved in providing a third party adaptive service which is more easily plugged into existing WCMS. The advantage of this approach is that it doesn't break the current browsing paradigm of freely navigating across different independent web sites on the web. In order to address this challenge we introduce a third party Adaptive Service that enables a unified cross-website personalized experience by discretely interfacing with separate independent WCMS. Thus the Adaptive Service strives to personalize the users experience when accessing each WCMS in a non-invasive manner by not adversely interfering with the web sites overall look and feel, content and functionality without losing the web sites identity and fundamental experience. This paper describes the design and an initial use case supported implementation example of this Adaptive Service. It also provides a survey that assesses the feasibility of the services integration with leading WCMS.
