The effort to personalise eLearning has led to the development of sophisticated Adaptive Hypermedia (AH) systems that can adapt to many aspects of the learner's characteristics or explicit preferences. However, while many of these adaptations are grounded in sound pedagogical theories, it is unclear how effective such adaptations are in supporting everyday teaching and learning processes that take place in the classroom today. This paper presents a study that explores what teachers in the UK, who have been named by their colleagues as implementing best-practice in the classroom, expect from an eLearning platform that can adapt to the individual needs of their students. The result of the study shows that there are currently some discrepancies between the teachers' expectations and what adaptive hypermedia currently offers. The paper then concludes by describing how these discrepancies can be addressed in future AH systems.

This paper proposes a novel approach in integrating seemingly contradictory approaches of teaching and learning via collaborative and personalised learning activities by using augmented reality museum exhibits. The paper highlights the benefits that computer supported collaborative learning and computer supported personalised learning bring or promise to bring to the learner. A proposal is given for a study that will setup a common ground for these two approaches via a location-aware augmented reality museum display. The principal aim of the study is to investigate how the process of learning collaboratively is intertwined with personalised experience of visiting the museum display. Ultimately, the result of the study will provide a new understanding of visitor's experience of museum displays, not only within the context of the museum's location, but also within the classroom where the visit truly begins and finishes.

Semantic Web Mining aims at combining the two fast-developing research areas Semantic Web and Web Mining. This survey analyzes the convergence of trends from both areas: Growing numbers of researchers work on improving the results of Web Mining by exploiting semantic structures in the Web, and they use Web Mining techniques for building the Semantic Web. Last but not least, these techniques can be used for mining the Semantic Web itself. The second aim of this paper is to use these concepts to circumscribe what Web space is, what it represents and how it can be represented and analyzed. This is used to sketch the role that Semantic Web Mining and the software agents and human agents involved in it can play in the evolution of Web space.

Autonomic systems are needed to self-manage the increasing complexity of pervasive communications access and the ubiquitous computing services it offers to humans. Policy based governance is the means by which humans will impose their will upon how autonomic systems manage themselves. Ultimately, these systems mediate information and services between people, in a rich tapestry of human associations formed though personal, commercial, and civic relationships. Therefore, if policies are to accurately reflect the wishes of their human authors, the process of authoring or engineering them must closely reflect the intricacies and fluidity of human relationships. We see this as the route to providing intuitive use of policy systems and thus to autonomic systems in empowering their users. We have previously presented a scheme for community-based management that addressed the dynamic organizational aspects of human relations in policy authoring. In this paper we review developments with this approach and describe its integration with a trust management system designed to flexibly regulate access to resources according to the trust relationships between participants. This approach promises to enable autonomic organisations, with structures that automatically adapt to the collective needs of the users.

The paper proposes an intuitive configuration tool for autonomic pervasive computing systems. Specifically, the paper presents a system for the inference of user task intentions from a variety of sensed information and describes how this can be readily configured by users to meet their needs for performing particular activities in particular spaces. The approach taken combines the capture of user task concepts and policies with their integration into a 3D virtual reality model of the environment being used so that these concepts and policies can be mapped intuitively, but accurately, onto the sensed physical environment.

The paper presents a general architecture for a P2P data sharing facility within a multi-agent framework, where peers as autonomous high-level nodal agents cooperate with each other to solve global tasks. A node may have several lower level local agents including local databases and partial global ontologies. In addition there are also minder agents coordinating the activities of the peers that offer the same type of service, thus providing fault-tolerance. The ability of this architecture in data and task sharing has been demonstrated by considering query processing and directory update strategies.

Core to ubiquitous computing environments are adaptive software systems that adapt their behavior to the context in which the user is attempting the task the system aims to support. This context is strongly linked with the physical environment in which the task is being performed. The efficacy of such adaptive systems is thus highly dependent on the human perception of the provided system behavior within the context represented by that particular physical environment and social situation. However, effective evaluation of human interaction with adaptive ubiquitous computing technologies has been hindered by the cost and logistics of accurately controlling such environmental context. This paper describes TATUS, a ubiquitous computing simulator aimed at overcoming these cost and logistical issues. Based on a 3D games engine, the simulator has been designed to maximize usability and flexibility in the experimentation of adaptive ubiquitous computing systems. We also describe how this simulator is interfaced with a testbed for wireless communication domain simulation.
