The impressive performance of ChatGPT and other foundation-model-based products in human language understanding has prompted both academia and industry to explore how these models can be tailored for specific industries and application scenarios. This process, known as the customization of domain-specific foundation models, addresses the limitations of general-purpose models, which may not fully capture the unique patterns and requirements of domain-specific data. Despite its importance, there is a notable lack of comprehensive overview papers on building domain-specific foundation models, while numerous resources exist for general-purpose models. To bridge this gap, this article provides a timely and thorough overview of the methodology for customizing domain-specific foundation models. It introduces basic concepts, outlines the general architecture, and surveys key methods for constructing domain-specific models. Furthermore, the article discusses various domains that can benefit from these specialized models and highlights the challenges ahead. Through this overview, we aim to offer valuable guidance and reference for researchers and practitioners from diverse fields to develop their own customized foundation models. PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA’s M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2REarth) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5%, 10%, 10% for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO‘s target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile towards the end of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases. © The Author(s) 2025.

A motion-based compression algorithm for resource-constrained video camera traps

Field-captured video facilitates detailed studies of spatio-temporal aspects of animal locomotion, decision-making and environmental interactions including predator-prey relationships and habitat utilisation. But even though data capture is cheap with mass-produced hardware, storage, processing and transmission overheads provide a hurdle to acquisition of high resolution video from field-situated edge computing devices. Efficient compression algorithms are therefore essential if monitoring is to be conducted on single-board computers in situations where such hurdles must be overcome. Animal motion tracking in the field has unique characteristics that necessitate the use of novel video compression techniques, which may be underexplored or unsuitable in other contexts. In this article, we therefore introduce a new motion analysis-based video compression algorithm specifically designed for camera traps. We implemented and tested this algorithm using a case study of insect-pollinator motion tracking on three popular edge computing platforms. The algorithm identifies and stores only image regions depicting motion relevant to pollination monitoring, reducing overall data size by an average of 87% across diverse test datasets. Our experiments demonstrate the algorithm’s capability to preserve critical information for insect behaviour analysis through both manual observation and automatic analysis of the compressed footage. The method presented in this paper enhances the applicability of low-powered computer vision edge devices to remote, in situ animal motion monitoring, and improves the efficiency of playback during behavioural analyses. Accurate obstacle identification represents a fundamental challenge within the scope of near-field perception for autonomous driving. Conventionally, fisheye cameras are frequently employed for comprehensive surround-view perception, including rear-view obstacle localization. However, the performance of such cameras can significantly deteriorate in low-light conditions, during nighttime, or when subjected to intense sun glare. Conversely, cost-effective sensors like ultrasonic sensors remain largely unaffected under these conditions. Therefore, we present, to our knowledge, the first end-to-end multimodal fusion model tailored for efficient obstacle perception in a bird’s-eye-view (BEV) perspective, utilizing fisheye cameras and ultrasonic sensors. Initially, ResNeXt-50 is employed as a set of unimodal encoders to extract features specific to each modality. Subsequently, the feature space associated with the visible spectrum undergoes transformation into BEV. The fusion of these two modalities is facilitated via concatenation. At the same time, the ultrasonic spectrum-based unimodal feature maps pass through content-aware dilated convolution, applied to mitigate the sensor misalignment between two sensors in the fused feature space. Finally, the fused features are utilized by a two-stage semantic occupancy decoder to generate grid-wise predictions for precise obstacle perception. We conduct a systematic investigation to determine the optimal strategy for multimodal fusion of both sensors. We provide insights into our dataset creation procedures, annotation guidelines, and perform a thorough data analysis to ensure adequate coverage of all scenarios. When applied to our dataset, the experimental results underscore the robustness and effectiveness of our proposed multimodal fusion approach. Single image super-resolution (SISR) has played an important role in the field of image processing. Recent generative adversarial networks (GANs) can achieve excellent results on low-resolution images with small samples. However, there are little literatures summarizing different GANs in SISR. In this paper, we conduct a comparative study of GANs from different perspectives. We first take a look at developments of GANs. Second, we present popular architectures for GANs in big and small samples for image applications. Then, we analyze motivations, implementations and differences of GANs based optimization methods and discriminative learning for image super-resolution in terms of supervised, semi-supervised and unsupervised manners, where these GANs are analyzed via integrating different network architectures, prior knowledge, loss functions and multiple tasks. Next, we compare performance of these popular GANs on public datasets via quantitative and qualitative analysis in SISR. Variable selection for genome-wide association studies is a key focus for bioinformatics researchers in high-performance computing. The rapid growth of biological and biomedical data demands has led to high-dimensional, heterogeneous datasets characterized by non-i.i.d. properties and numerous response variables, often resulting in false negatives or positives in recovered results. Traditional methods, when nal̈ively applied, yield suboptimal performance due to confounding factors. To account for the complex interdependencies in heterogeneous data and enhance the practical outcomes of genome-wide association studies, we introduce two methods, TGsLMM and TTsLMM, which balance effects between response and explanatory variables for subpopulation inference. Our unified framework performs sparse variable selection using graph-structured or tree-guided structures in a low-rank linear mixed model. Additionally, we extend our approach to high-dimensional datasets and adaptively select the covariance structure for genomic data. Extensive experiments on synthetic and three real-world datasets emphasize the robustness and effectiveness of our proposed methods, achieving the highest ROC area compared to baselines and superior results for future potential.

Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) allows computations on encrypted data without knowledge of the plaintext message and currently has been the focus of both academia and industry. However, the performance issue hinders its large-scale application, highlighting the urgent requirements of high-performance FHE *** noticing the tremendous potential of GPUs in the field of cryptographic acceleration, this paper comprehensively investigates how to convert the available computing resources residing in GPUs into FHE workhorses, and implement a full set of low-level and middle-level FHE primitives based on two arithmetic units (i.e., INT32 and FP64 units) with three types of data precision (i.e., INT32, INT64 and FP64). This paper gives a comprehensive evaluation and comparison based on each road-map. Our implementations of fundamental functions outperform the implementations on the same platform by 1.7× to 16.7×. Taking CKKS FHE schemes as a case study, our implementation of homomorphic multiplication achieves 3.2× speedup over the state-of-the-art GPU-based implementation, even considering the difference of platforms. The detailed evaluation and comparison of this paper would offer a vital reference for the follow-up work to choose appropriate underlying arithmetic units and important primitive optimizations in GPU-based FHE implementations.

The AAAI-10 workshop program was held on July 11-12, 2010, at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia. The workshop program included 13 workshops covering a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. There were several presentations on particular formalisms for combining the levels of planning from the perspectives of classical planning, motion planning, POMDPs, search-based planning, and temporal logic-based constraints. Henry Lieberman from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Laboratory presented work developing a platform for knowledge acquisition and usage from expert users, built upon experience with eliciting information from nonexperts in a collaborative manner. The objective of the AAAI Workshop on Goal-Directed Autonomy (GDA) was to encourage discussion and novel contributions on intelligent agents that can self-select their goals. Jeremy Baxter from QinetiQ focused on user interaction, while Nick Hawes described a goal-directed reasoning framework for controlling a mobile robot.

Survey of reduced workload and crewing strategies for ocean patrol vessels

He has applied most of his 24 years of experience in the application of human engineering technology to maritime systems. Mr. Baker has directed much of Carlow's efforts to reduce ship workload and to improve human performance and maritime safety through application of human factors methods and data. He is a Certified Industrial Ergonomist (CIE) as well as a Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (CHFEP). Both certifications were granted by Oxford Research where Mr. Baker also serves as an Advisory Board member. Russell D. Krull P.E. is a senior engineer with A&T/Proteus Engineering with more than 18 years of experi-ence in marine engineering naval architecture and program management including 16 years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. Recent experience includes advanced ship design studies engineering software development technical support for the USMC Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle propulsion systems analyses ship structural engineering and cargo handling systems engineering. Mr. Krull has an M.S.E. in naval architecture and marine engineering and an M.S.E. in industrial and operations engineering from University of Michigan and a B.S. in ocean engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Capt. Glenn L. Snyder USCG. Regrettably since this paper was originally written Capt. Snyder has passed away. At the time of his death he was an operations specialist assigned to the Coast Guard's Deepwater Capabilities Replacement Project as Chief of Human Systems Integration. He served as commanding officer of the patrol boat Cape George (WPB-95306) the icebreaking tug Biscayne Bay (WTGB-104) and the cutter Legare (WMEC-911). A 1975 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Capt. Snyder held an M.A. in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College and an M.A. in international relations from Salve Regina College. In addition he was a 1998 fellow of the Foreign Service

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the concept exploration phase of its Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) acquisition project. This project will define the next generation of surface, air and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) assets used to perform the Coast Guard's missions in the IDS environment (>50 NM off the U. S. coastline). As part of early technology investigations, the needs exist to: (1) analyze the workload requirements of the IDS, (2) identify alternative means to perform ship's work, and (3) optimize ship manning consistent with ship workload, performance criteria, and the available tools and equipment aboard. To reduce shipboard work requires an understanding of the mission and support requirements placed on the vessel and crew, how these requirements are currently met, and how requirements might otherwise be met to reduce workload and crew size. This study examined currently implemented workload and manpower reducing approaches of commercial maritime fleets, U.S. and foreign navies, and foreign coastguards. These approaches were analyzed according to evaluation criteria approved by the IDS acquisition project team. From this, strategies for shipboard work reduction that may be considered for adoption by the IDS were identified and analyzed according to performance and costs factors. Ten workload-reducing strategies were identified: damage control, bridge, multiple crewing, engineering, risk acceptance, modularity, deck, enabling technologies, ship/personnel readiness, and operability and maintainability.

Supply chains form the backbone of modern economies and therefore require reliable information flows. In practice, however, supply chains face severe technical challenges, especially regarding security and privacy. In this work, we consolidate studies from supply chain management, information systems, and computer science from 2010–2021 in an interdisciplinary meta-survey to make this topic holistically accessible to interdisciplinary research. In particular, we identify a significant potential for computer scientists to remedy technical challenges and improve the robustness of information flows. We subsequently present a concise information flow-focused taxonomy for supply chains before discussing future research directions to provide possible entry points. Copyright © 2023, The Authors.
