We investigate the transformation and the preservation of XML referential constraints in XML data transformation for integration purposes in this paper. In the transformation and the preservation, we consider XML inclusion dependencies and XML foreign keys. Transforming data from different information systems is important and challenging for integration purposes as data can be stored and represented in different data models in different information systems. In addition, when modeling data in the information systems, integrity constraints on the schemas are necessary for semantics and to maintain consistency purposes. Thus when schemas with conforming data are transformed from heterogeneous information systems, there is a need to transform and preserve semantics of data using constraints. Addressing this problem, we propose how data from different source information systems can be transformed to a global information system. We also review how constraints in data transformation are used in data integration for the purpose of integrating information systems. Our research is towards the handling of semantics using integrity constraints in data integration from heterogeneous information systems.

Functional dependency (FD) is one of the integrity constraints for any data model. In relational data model, FDs are well studied and are widely used in normalization theory and in key algorithm. In recent years, XML has emerged as an widely used data representation and storage format over the world wide web. The growing use of XML has necessitated the XML document semantically stronger. XML functional dependency can be one of the ways to make the XML data semantically richer. In this paper, we propose XML functional dependency (XFD), specially for the purpose of XML data transformation for semantic integration of schemas with integrity constraints. While proposing, we show how XFD is defined on the XML Document Type Definition (DTD) and is satisfied by the XML documents. We introduce the novel concept 'tuple' that produces the semantically correct tuples in the XML document during XFD satisfaction. We show that XML key is a special case of XFD. We also discuss the advantages of our proposal over other previous XFD definitions.

Keys are an important part of any data model. In relational model, keys are well studied and are widely used. In recent years, XML has emerged as an widely used data representation and storage format in the world wide web. The data centric approach of XML has necessitated the definition of integrity constraints for XML. XML key is regarded as one of those integrity constraints. In this paper, we define XML keys, specifically for the purpose of XML data transformation and integration with integrity constraints. In the proposal, we show how XML keys are defined on the XML document type definition (DTD) and are satisfied by the XML documents. We introduce the novel concept P-tuple (pair-wise tuple) that produces semantically correct tuples in the XML document during key satisfaction. Our definition for XML keys can also be extended to XML relative keys. Finally, we discuss how our proposal for XML keys has some advantages over other previous proposals and standards.
