Traditional network intrusion detection approaches encounter feasibility and sustainability issues to combat modern, sophisticated, and unpredictable security attacks. Deep neural networks (DNN) have been successfully applied for intrusion detection problems. The optimal use of DNN-based classifiers requires careful tuning of the hyper-parameters. Manually tuning the hyperparameters is tedious, time-consuming, and computationally expensive. Hence, there is a need for an automatic technique to find optimal hyperparameters for the best use of DNN in intrusion detection. This paper proposes a novel Bayesian optimization-based framework for the automatic optimization of hyperparameters, ensuring the best DNN architecture. We evaluated the performance of the proposed framework on NSL-KDD, a benchmark dataset for network intrusion detection. The experimental results show the framework's effectiveness as the resultant DNN architecture demonstrates significantly higher intrusion detection performance than the random search optimization-based approach in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-score. © 2022, CC BY.

Online Attentive Kernel-Based Temporal Difference Learning

With rising uncertainty in the real world, online Reinforcement Learning (RL) has been receiving increasing attention due to its fast learning capability and improving data efficiency. However, online RL often suffers from complex Value Function Approximation (VFA) and catastrophic interference, creating difficulty for the deep neural network to be applied to an online RL algorithm in a fully online setting. Therefore, a simpler and more adaptive approach is introduced to evaluate value function with the kernel-based model. Sparse representations are superior at handling interference, indicating that competitive sparse representations should be learnable, non-prior, non-truncated and explicit when compared with current sparse representation methods. Moreover, in learning sparse representations, attention mechanisms are utilized to represent the degree of sparsification, and a smooth attentive function is introduced into the kernel-based VFA. In this paper, we propose an Online Attentive Kernel-Based Temporal Difference (OAKTD) algorithm using two-timescale optimization and provide convergence analysis of our proposed algorithm. Experimental evaluations showed that OAKTD outperformed several Online Kernel-based Temporal Difference (OKTD) learning algorithms in addition to the Temporal Difference (TD) learning algorithm with Tile Coding on public Mountain Car, Acrobot, CartPole and Puddle World tasks. While deep learning succeeds in a wide range of tasks, it highly depends on the massive collection of annotated data which is expensive and time-consuming. To lower the cost of data annotation, active learning has been proposed to interactively query an oracle to annotate a small proportion of informative samples in an unlabeled dataset. Inspired by the fact that the samples with higher loss are usually more informative to the model than the samples with lower loss, in this article we present a novel deep active learning approach that queries the oracle for data annotation when the unlabeled sample is believed to incorporate high loss. The core of our approach is a measurement temporal output discrepancy (TOD) that estimates the sample loss by evaluating the discrepancy of outputs given by models at different optimization steps. Our theoretical investigation shows that TOD lower-bounds the accumulated sample loss thus it can be used to select informative unlabeled samples. On basis of TOD, we further develop an effective unlabeled data sampling strategy as well as an unsupervised learning criterion for active learning. Due to the simplicity of TOD, our methods are efficient, flexible, and task-agnostic. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves superior performances than the state-of-the-art active learning methods on image classification and semantic segmentation tasks. In addition, we show that TOD can be utilized to select the best model of potentially the highest testing accuracy from a pool of candidate models. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. LadRa-Net: Locally-aware dynamic re-read attention net for sentence semantic matching

Sentence semantic matching requires an agent to determine the semantic relation between two sentences, which is widely used in various natural language tasks, such as Natural Language Inference (NLI), Paraphrase Identification (PI), and so on. Much recent progress has been made in this area, especially attention-based methods and pre-trained language model based methods. However, most of these methods focus on all the important parts in sentences in a static way and only emphasize how important the words are to the query, inhibiting the ability of attention mechanism. In order to overcome this problem and boost the performance of attention mechanism, we propose a novel dynamic re-read attention, which can pay close attention to one small region of sentences at each step and re-read the important parts for better sentence representations. Based on this attention variation, we develop a novel Dynamic Re-read Network (DRr-Net) for sentence semantic matching. Moreover, selecting one small region in dynamic re-read attention seems insufficient for sentence semantics, and employing pre-trained language models as input encoders will introduce incomplete and fragile representation problems. To this end, we extend DRr-Net to Locally-Aware Dynamic Re-read Attention Net (LadRa-Net), in which local structure of sentences is employed to alleviate the shortcoming of Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE) in pre-trained language models and boost the performance of dynamic reread attention. Extensive experiments on two popular sentence semantic matching tasks demonstrate that DRr-Net can significantly improve the performance of sentence semantic matching. Meanwhile, LadRa-Net is able to achieve better performance by considering the local structures of sentences. Better Pseudo-label: Joint Domain-aware label and Dual-classifier for Semi-supervised Domain Generalization

With the goal of directly generalizing trained model to unseen target domains, domain generalization (DG), a newly proposed learning paradigm, has attracted considerable attention. Previous DG models usually require a sufficient quantity of annotated samples from observed source domains during training. In this paper, we relax this requirement about full annotation and investigate semisupervised domain generalization (SSDG) where only one source domain is fully annotated along with the other domains totally unlabeled in the training process. With the challenges of tackling the domain gap between observed source domains and predicting unseen target domains, we propose a novel deep framework via joint domain-aware labels and dual-classifier to produce high-quality pseudo-labels. Concretely, to predict accurate pseudo-labels under domain shift, a domain-aware pseudo-labeling module is developed. Also, considering inconsistent goals between generalization and pseudo-labeling: former prevents overfitting on all source domains while latter might overfit the unlabeled source domains for high accuracy, we employ a dual-classifier to independently perform pseudo-labeling and domain generalization in the training process. When accurate pseudo-labels are generated for unlabeled source domains, the domain mixup operation is applied to augment new domains between labeled and unlabeled domains, which is beneficial for boosting the generalization capability of the model. The spread of COVID-19 has brought a huge disaster to the world, and the automatic segmentation of infection regions can help doctors to make diagnosis quickly and reduce workload. However, there are several challenges for the accurate and complete segmentation, such as the scattered infection area distribution, complex background noises, and blurred segmentation boundaries. To this end, in this paper, we propose a novel network for automatic COVID-19 lung infection segmentation from CT images, named BCS-Net, which considers the boundary, context, and semantic attributes. The BCS-Net follows an encoder-decoder architecture, and more designs focus on the decoder stage that includes three progressively Boundary-Context-Semantic Reconstruction (BCSR) blocks. In each BCSR block, the attention-guided global context (AGGC) module is designed to learn the most valuable encoder features for decoder by highlighting the important spatial and boundary locations and modeling the global context dependence. Besides, a semantic guidance (SG) unit generates the semantic guidance map to refine the decoder features by aggregating multi-scale high-level features at the intermediate resolution. Universal deep network for steganalysis of color image based on channel representation

Up to now, most existing steganalytic methods are designed for grayscale images, and they are not suitable for color images that are widely used in current social networks. In this paper, we design a universal color image steganalysis network (called UCNet) in spatial and JPEG domains. The proposed method includes preprocessing, convolutional, and classification modules. To preserve the steganographic artifacts in each color channel, in preprocessing module, we firstly separate the input image into three channels according to the corresponding embedding spaces (i.e. RGB for spatial steganography and YCbCr for JPEG steganography), and then extract the image residuals with 62 fixed high-pass filters, finally concatenate all truncated residuals for subsequent analysis rather than adding them together with normal convolution like existing CNN-based steganalyzers. To accelerate the network convergence and effectively reduce the number of parameters, in convolutional module, we carefully design three types of layers with different shortcut connections and group convolution structures to further learn high-level steganalytic features. In classification module, we employ a global average pooling and fully connected layer for classification. We conduct extensive experiments on ALASKA II to demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art results compared with the modern CNN-based steganalyzers (e.g., SRNet and J-YeNet) in both spatial and JPEG domains, while keeping relatively few memory requirements and training time. Research on social bot detection plays a crucial role in maintaining the order and reliability of information dissemination while increasing trust in social interactions. The current mainstream social bot detection models rely on black-box neural network technology, e.g., Graph Neural Network, Transformer, etc., which lacks interpretability. In this work, we present UnDBot, a novel unsupervised, interpretable, yet effective and practical framework for detecting social bots. This framework is built upon structural information theory. We begin by designing three social relationship metrics that capture various aspects of social bot behaviors: Posting Type Distribution, Posting Influence, and Follow-to-follower Ratio. Three new relationships are utilized to construct a new, unified, and weighted social multi-relational graph, aiming to model the relevance of social user behaviors and discover long-distance correlations between users. Second, we introduce a novel method for optimizing heterogeneous structural entropy. This method involves the personalized aggregation of edge information from the social multi-relational graph to generate a two-dimensional encoding tree. The heterogeneous structural entropy facilitates decoding of the substantial structure of the social bots network and enables hierarchical clustering of social bots. Thirdly, a new community labeling method is presented to distinguish social bot communities by computing the user's stationary distribution, measuring user contributions to network structure, and counting the intensity of user aggregation within the community. Compared with ten representative social bot detection approaches, comprehensive experiments demonstrate the advantages of effectiveness and interpretability of UnDBot on four real social network datasets. Medical image segmentation (i.e., liver segmentation) is an important pre-processing for computer-aided diagnosis and computer-aided surgery. Deep learning, which can perform fully automated segmentation, has been popular in the medical field because of its ability to reduce the burden on doctors. However, segmentation is inherently a difficult problem and the accuracy of current deep learning-based segmentation methods remains insufficient. In this work, an interactive network-based segmentation is proposed, which can improve the operation through collaborations with a doctor. © 2020 IEEE.
