In this paper, we define formal concept mining, a method for generating and evaluating all the pertinent concepts from large transaction databases. We propose a novel efficient formal concept mining algorithm, called Distribution Curve Self-Evaluation (DCSEA). Attempting repeatedly to self-adjust the normal distribution curve to be as close as the symmetry curve, DCSEA automatically identifies all the pertinent concepts by deleting and masking non-pertinent concepts. Instead of using the global support threshold, DCSEA allows users to specify the interestingness of the output concepts by using a more understandable statistic-based threshold, called minimum significance threshold. Such threshold measures the level of significance of the concept extent size (the number of objects) from all the concept extent sizes. Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm gives high concept retrieval performance, and efficient concept focusing, especially on large databases. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The integration of disparate heterogeneous spatial databases for extending queries is a challenging task. The authors present a novel framework, based on a k-nearest neighbor (kNN) algorithm, for integrating remote sensing imagery with Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA) sample point/plot data managed in a relational database system. We then demonstrate how queries to this system may be extended over any arbitrary region of interest in a Web based geographical information system. To build the integrated database, spectral signatures are collected at FIA plot locations from the Landsat TM image. A plot-id image is produced by assigning each pixel to the closest FIA plot in multi-dimensional spectral space. The resulting image provides an interface to the Forest Inventory Analysis Data-base (FIADB) and allows generalizations of the estimates for any user defined query window or region of interest (ROI). This methodology, along with geostatistical analysis, is integrated into a client/server Web based geographical information system, which provides Internet users with an easy to use query interface for the FIADB and spatial databases.

In this paper, we propose a method implementing real-time scheduling in the Unix, a general-purpose operating system (GPOS), by considering the deadline of real-time tasks. Our approach employs a special task called the scheduling daemon, which deals with all the real-time tasks in a system and makes just one task become a ready-to-run state and other sleep states. This causes the Unix scheduler to deal with only one real-time task as a rule, and thus bypasses time sharing-based scheduling strategy of the Unix. Therefore, all the real-time tasks are scheduled by the strategy of the scheduling daemon. We implement the scheduling daemon on the Unix, and build a real-time platform in order that application programmers develop real-time systems more effectively. Moreover, we show the superiority of our approach through extensive experiments.

The authors discuss multimedia data communications using the Internet from the standpoint of providing services, and propose a cost model based on multilevel complex objects for the purpose of responding to the various needs of users. The proposed cost model creates multiple levels of the service which provide each element of the complex object, and then introduces the concept of `service ranges' that can dynamically vary the service which can be received within the scope of the price paid. Conventional multimedia data can only provide one service. However, the authors' service can be selected dynamically from within a range based on the price paid by the user. In order to evaluate these methods, the authors created a framework which can be applied to 3DCG content using VRML by using Java and OODBMS. In addition, rights such as copyrights that are frequently a part of 3DCG content must be protected. The proposed multilevel complex object can confirm a user's rights by using a built-in user authentication function. Thus, copyright management features that provide services within a service range available to valid users and block out illegal users can be realized.

The heterogeneous environment is emerging in current information systems. Within this situation, it is desirable to maintain consistency across databases, i.e., to ensure that they do not contradict each other with respect to the existence or value of a real-world entity. Active rules have been widely used in modern database systems. Active databases contain the capability to automatically monitor the conditions which are defined over the database state and the ability to take an action when the state of the underlying database changes. They have provided a great contribution to the maintenance of data integrity and data consistency in database systems. This paper investigates how to integrate active rules into a heterogeneous database system environment.

database system reengineering technique has been used to resolve the problem of converting from existing out-of-data database systems to new technique database systems in order to reduce the new system implementation cost. The technique consists of three parts: schema translation, data conversion, and program translation. The schema translation requires the transferring of existing database schema into the new database schema with better semantics. Recapturing the semantics is a complicated and difficult work. During the database design phase, the semantics has been lost from the conceptual data model to the logical data model. It is difficult to recapture it. After recapturing the semantics from the original conceptual database schema, we also need to have a sophisticated knowledge base to store the knowledge. The paper describes a new schema translation system, which can recapture the missing/hidden semantics of a database. The kernel of the system is an extended entity relationship (EER) data dictionary system (DDS), which can store all the semantics of the new database schema.

Active rules have been widely used in the modern database systems. They have provided a great contribution to the maintenance of data integrity and data consistency in database systems. They also enable the system to become active instead of passive which traditional databases do. In passive databases the queries or transactions are executed only when explicitly requested by users. Active databases contain the capability to automatic monitor the conditions which defined over the database state and the ability to take an action when the state of the underlying database changes. This paper investigates how the active rule can be triggered in a heterogeneous database system environment.

It is well-known that the computation cost to find the transitive closure (TC) of a graph stored as an adjacency matrix is the same, to within a constant factor, as matrix multiplication. In this paper, we present a new TC algorithm based on double hashing and two-dimensionally organized files. We show that, when using this algorithm, the computation and i/o costs of finding the TC of a database relation is like that of performing a relational composition operation. For sparse closures, sparse compositions will be performed, which may be significantly more thrifty than the corresponding matrix operations, which must be at least O(n2), and for which most algorithms are O(n3). © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1991.

The authors present the design principles of MCFS, an expert system building tool based on the idea of combining multiple criteria reasoning with the concepts of fuzzy logic. An important feature of MCFS is its ability to handle multiple criteria reasoning by structuring the deduction process into a hierarchy of logical levels. Within each level, the rules are organized into sets of rules and rule set groups. The concepts of fuzzy logic are introduced by allowing uncertainty within each rule, each set of rules, and each rule set group. MCFS has been fully implemented and applied to several domains of knowledge such as computer system selection and procurement, solution of nonlinear simultaneous equations, neck-tie selection, and longevity estimation. Experiments with these applications indicate that, compared to standard expert system tools, MCFS produces expert systems which are easier to build and better match the human expert.< >

Learning from inconclusive data is an important problem that has not been addressed in the concept learning literature. In this paper, we define inconclusiveness and illustrate why ID3-like algorithms are bound to result in overspecialized classifications when trained on inconclusive data. We address the difficult problem of deciding when to stop specialization during top-down decision tree generation, and describe a modified version of Quinlan's ID3 algorithm, called INFERULE, which addresses some of the problems involved in learning from inconclusive data. Results show that INFERULE outperformed ID3 (with and without pruning) in tests on a real-world diagnostic database containing automobile repair cases. © Proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Machine Learning, ICML 1989.
