Recognizing 3-D objects from imaging sensors has received considerable attention in the last few years. Target recognition inherently depends on target pose estimation, because target signatures vary greatly with pose even for a single target/sensor combination. This paper addresses pose estimation for ground-based targets viewed with a combination of active and passive imagers, specifically a laser radar (LADAR) range imager and a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) thermal imager. The objective is to develop Cramer-Rao type bounds for the mean-squared error which explicitly reveal the roles of sensor and scenario parameters, and permit quantitative assessment of the benefits of sensor fusion. These analytical results are compared with simulation results obtained using the Hilbert-Schmidt norm as the performance measure. © 1999 IEEE.

We consider the control performance of an LQG system with a noisy analog feedback channel between the state-observation and the controller. To bound the performance, we use the sequential rate distortion function and the assumption of equi-memory. We then discuss the trade-offs between control and communication costs and how to relax the equi-memory assumption.

A nonlinear diffusion process known to be effective for image segmentation is analyzed in 1-D. It is shown that it optimally solves certain edge detection problems. A fast implementation of the algorithm is introduced.

Stateflow/sup TM/ is a MATLAB/Simulink toolbox that supports the development of executable specifications for discrete-state functions. It also supports general flowcharting of program functions. This paper describes a MATLAB program, sf2smv 2.0, that generates input for a symbolic model checking program, SMV, to verify properties of Stateflow/sup TM/ diagrams in Simulink. The SMV modules are constructed to reflect precisely the execution semantics in the simulation of Stateflow/sup TM/ diagrams. This extends previous work that created verification files that reflected an idealized version of the Stateflow/sup TM/ semantics. This paper describes how the principal Stateflow/sup TM/ execution rules are translated into SMV modules. Examples are used to illustrate the transformation procedures and their application to verify properties of executable specifications for control features in automotive powertrain control applications.

Diop et al. previously (1994) proposed a general observer design methodology based upon numerical differentiation and the interpretation of observability of a system as the solvability of the system's dynamical equations for the state vector in terms of a finite number of derivatives of the output and input. Numerical differentiation-base observers are alternatives to asymptotic observers for nonlinear systems. Various techniques are known to be efficient for the estimation of the few first derivatives from data with low frequency content, such as polynomial- and spline-based least squares, and averaged central differences. The main advantages of such observers are intuitiveness, flexibility and speed. However, as is the case of many inverse problems, differentiation is an ill-posed operator. This communication proposes the use of regularization to partially overcome the noise sensitivity that is inherent in the standard numerical differentiation. Regularization of numerical derivatives from experimental data consists of two operations: filtering and differentiation. Mollification is a method of filter design that is fairly well amenable to a mathematical analysis, including computation of estimation error bounds. In this method experimental data is projected onto Sobolev spaces of signals with less high frequency content, which may then be differentiated stably. The filters in question are infinite dimensional. They can be implemented approximately by means of digital Fourier transformation on finite moving windows of the data.

The existence and stability properties of periodic orbits are studied for nonlinear systems with impulse effects. This is achieved with an extension of the well-known method of Poincare. The main result is then applied to a model of an under actuated, five degree of freedom biped robot with a torso in order to prove, for the first time, the existence of an asymptotically stable walking cycle.

Several segmentation techniques were evaluated for their effectiveness in distinguishing lesion from background in dermatoscopic images of pigmented lesions (moles and melanomas). These included 5 techniques previously used for segmentation of pigmented lesions, and several new techniques based on stabilized inverse diffusion equations (SIDE) and Markov random fields (MRF). Novel multiresolution implementations of the SIDE and MRF algorithms were created for this work. Techniques based on the SIDE and MRF algorithms produced the most accurate segmentations.

Fast implementation of the forward positional acceleration of robots via the distributed arithmetic technique

This paper refers to the fast implementation of the positional forward acceleration of the end effector of revolute robotic arms with spherical wrists, using the distributed arithmetic technique. The acceleration of the end effector is calculated by a cascade configuration of two pipelined arrays that calculate the Jacobian matrix and its time derivative, as well as the centrifugal-Coriolis and linear accelerations. These partial accelerations are then added in the adder tree. The building blocks of the arrays are the distributed arithmetic-based circuits that implement the matrix-vector multiplications involved in the calculations. The digit-serial configuration of the proposed implementation of the positional forward acceleration of the end effector is described. The serial and the parallel configurations may result as special cases of the digit-serial configuration. The proposed distributed arithmetic (DA) implementation of the positional forward acceleration may be applied, after appropriate modifications, to the general case of robots having either revolute or prismatic joints, with any type of wrist.
