— Model order reduction plays a crucial role in simplifying complex systems while preserving their essential dynamic characteristics, making it an invaluable tool in a wide range of applications, including robotic systems, signal processing, and fluid dynamics. However, traditional model order reduction techniques like balanced truncation are not designed to handle tensor data directly and instead require unfolding the data, which may lead to the loss of important higher-order structural information. In this article, we introduce a novel framework for data-driven model order reduction of T-product-based dynamical systems (TPDSs), which are often used to capture the evolution of third-order tensor data such as images and videos through the T-product. Specifically, we develop advanced T-product-based techniques, including T-balanced truncation, T-balanced proper orthogonal decomposition, and the T-eigensystem realization algorithm for input-output TPDSs by leveraging the unique properties of T-singular value decomposition. We demonstrate that these techniques offer significant memory and computational savings while achieving reduction errors that are comparable to those of conventional methods. In this paper, we consider the problem of learning a predictive model for population cell growth dynamics as a function of the media conditions. We first introduce a generic data-driven framework for training operator-theoretic models to predict cell growth rate. We then introduce the experimental design and data generated in this study, namely growth curves of Pseudomonas putida as a function of casein and glucose concentrations. We use a data driven approach for model identification, specifically the nonlinear autoregressive (NAR) model to represent the dynamics. We show theoretically that Hankel DMD can be used to obtain a solution of the NAR model. We show that it identifies a constrained NAR model and to obtain a more general solution, we define a causal state space system using 1-step, 2-step,..., τ-step predictors of the NAR model and identify a Koopman operator for this model using extended dynamic mode decomposition. The hybrid scheme we call causal-jump dynamic mode decomposition, which we illustrate on a growth profile or fitness prediction challenge as a function of different input growth conditions. We show that our model is able to recapitulate training growth curve data with 96.6% accuracy and predict test growth curve data with 91% accuracy.

Distribution system state estimation: an overview of recent developments

In the envisioned smart grid, high penetration of uncertain renewables, unpredictable participation of (industrial) customers, and purposeful manipulation of smart meter readings, all highlight the need for accurate, fast, and robust power system state estimation (PSSE). Nonetheless, most real-time data available in the current and upcoming transmission/distribution systems are nonlinear in power system states (i.e., nodal voltage phasors). Scalable approaches to dealing with PSSE tasks undergo a paradigm shift toward addressing the unique modeling and computational challenges associated with those nonlinear measurements. In this study, we provide a contemporary overview of PSSE and describe the current state of the art in the nonlinear weighted least-squares and least-absolutevalue PSSE. To benchmark the performance of unbiased estimators, the Cramer-Rao lower bound is developed. Accounting for cyber attacks, new corruption models are introduced, and robust PSSE approaches are outlined as well. Finally, distribution system state estimation is discussed along with its current challenges. Simulation tests corroborate the effectiveness of the developed algorithms as well as the practical merits of the theory.

—Internet of things (IoT) is powering up smart cities by connecting all kinds of electronic devices. The power supply problem of IoT devices constitutes a major challenge in current IoT development, due to the poor battery endurance as well as the troublesome cable deployment. The wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has recently emerged as a promising solution. Yet, existing WPT advances cannot support free and mobile charging like Wi-Fi communications. To this end, the concept of mobile energy transfer (MET) is proposed, which relies critically on an resonant beam charging (RBC) technology. The adaptive (A) RBC technology builds on RBC, but aims at improving the charging efficiency by charging devices at device preferred current and voltage levels adaptively. A mobile ARBC scheme is developed relying on an adaptive source power control. Extensive numerical simulations using a 1,000mAh Li-ion battery show that the mobile ARBC outperforms simple charging schemes such as the constant power charging, the profile-adaptive charging, and the distance-adaptive charging in saving energy. Consider a partition of Rn into finitely many polyhedral regions Di and associated drift vectors µi ∈ Rn. We study "hybrid" dynamical systems whose trajectories have a constant drift, x = µi, whenever x is in the interior of the ith region Di, and behave consistently on the boundary between different regions. Our main result asserts that if such a system is nonexpansive (i.e., if the Euclidean distance between any pair of trajectories is a nonincreasing function of time), then the system must be conservative, i.e., its trajectories are the same as the trajectories of the negative subgradient flow associated with a potential function. Furthermore, this potential function is necessarily convex, and is linear on each of the regions Di. We actually establish a more general version of this result, by making seemingly weaker assumptions on the dynamical system of interest. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The direct calculation of the absorption coefficient spectra of various tissues from spectral measurements allowed to retrieve the contents of melanin and lipofuscin. In the rabbit brain cortex, 1.8 times higher melanin content is explained by the neuron degeneration process. Similar melanin and lipofuscin contents were found in the rabbit pancreas as a result of the tissue aging process. The conversion of 83 % of the melanin in the human normal kidney into lipofuscin in the cancer kidney indicates that lipofuscin can be considered a kidney cancer marker in humans.

An Online Approach to Physical Watermark Design

This paper considers the problem of designing physical watermark signals in order to optimally detect possible replay attack in a linear time-invariant system, under the assumption that the system parameters are unknown and need to be identified online. We first provide a replay attack model, where an adversary replays the previous sensor data in order to fool the system. A physical watermarking scheme, which leverages a random control input as a watermark to detect the replay attack, is then introduced. The optimal watermark signal design problem is cast as an optimization problem, which aims to achieve the optimal trade-off between control performance and intrusion detection. An online watermarking design and system identification algorithm is provided to deal with systems with unknown parameters. We prove that the proposed algorithm converges to the optimal one and characterize the almost sure convergence rate. A numerical example and an industrial process example are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We study the problem of robust resource allocation with momentum following a dynamical systems point of view. Motivated by a class of existing optimization dynamics with no momentum defined on the general m-simplex, we propose a class of time-varying differential equations with momentum that achieve acceleration and preserve most of the asymptotic properties of its time-invariant counterpart. Since time-varying dynamics with momentum in continuous-time usually lack of structural robustness properties, we present a hybrid regularization that induces the property of uniform asymptotic stability in the system. We show this by using the invariance principle for well-posed hybrid dynamical systems, and we establish the existence of strictly positive margins of robustness with respect to arbitrarily small disturbances. We illustrate our results via numerical simulations.

The prediction and forecasting of faults occurring in photovoltaic (PV) system is one of the important aspect to escalate the reliability, output power generation, proficiency, lifetime and effectiveness of overall system. In this article, the behavior of PV array is studied under various faulty circumstances and new approach has offered for the better performance assessment of PV array. This approach is established on the analysis of peculiarities displayed by voltage power (V-P) and voltage-current (V-I) characteristics curves of PV array under different faulty conditions. The proposed technique can be used to identify and classify the five common faults in PV system. These progressive faults (includes open circuit, line-to-line, partial shading, degradation and bridging faults) have been occurred at the basic components of PV cell and at the connection point between PV modules. The characteristic curves under normal and faulty conditions have been compared by utilizing Matlab/Simulink environment. Hence, the suggested method can be utilized to determine the important fact about the health PV array.

With the substantial growth of logistics businesses the need for larger and more automated warehouses increases, thus giving rise to fully robotized shop-floors with mobile robots in charge of transporting and distributing goods. However, even in fully automatized warehouse systems the need for human intervention frequently arises, whether because of maintenance or because of fulfilling specific orders, thus bringing mobile robots and humans ever closer in an integrated warehouse environment. In order to ensure smooth and efficient operation of such a warehouse, paths of both robots and humans need to be carefully planned;however, due to the possibility of humans deviating from the assigned path, this becomes an even more challenging task. Given that, the supervising system should be able to recognize human intentions and its alternative paths in real-time. In this paper, we propose a framework for human deviation detection and intention recognition which outputs the most probable paths of the humans workers and the planner that acts accordingly by replanning for robots to move out of the human's path. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework increases total number of deliveries, especially human deliveries, and reduces human-robot encounters. Copyright © 2020, The Authors.
