In this paper the regulation problem for linear continuous-time systems by linear state-feedback under linear state and/or control constraints is investigated. This problem, named the Linear Constrained Regulation Problem, has been extensively studied when the regulation concerns an equilibrium situated in the interior of the domain of admissible states. In this paper the case when the desired equilibrium state is on the boundary of the domain of admissible states is considered. The tools used for the analysis and design of this kind of control problems are the conditions of positive invariance of polyhedral sets, Lyapunov-like polyhedral functions, LMI methods and eigenstructure assignment techniques. © IFAC.

This paper proposes a simple, non-iterative way of calculating low-complexity controlled contractive sets, and shows how such set can be used for controller design for systems with state and input constraints. The result is a low complexity controller, suitable for implementation in embedded control systems with modest computational power and available memory. © IFAC.

Optimization problems with variables constrained to be in SO(d)--orthogonal matrices with determinant one--arise in attitude estimation, molecular imaging, and computer vision applications, among others. Recently it has been shown that the convex hull of SO(d) can be described in terms of linear matrix inequalities. This allows us to devise new semidefinite programming-based reformulations and relaxations of problems involving rotation matrices. In this paper we illustrate the use of these techniques for two different types of optimization problems over SO(d). The first type of problem arises in jointly estimating the attitude and spin-rate of a spin-stabilized satellite. We show how to exactly reformulate such problems as semidefinite programs. The second type of problem arises when estimating the orientations of a network of objects (such as cameras, satellites or molecules) from noisy relative orientation measurements. For this class of problems we formulate new semidefinite relaxations that are tighter than those existing in the literature, and show that they are exact when the underlying graph is a tree.

In this paper, we investigate fundamental limits for physical implementations of the Kalman-Bucy filter for state estimation of a class of linear port-Hamiltonian systems. In particular, for the studied class of systems we show the Kalman-Bucy filter itself is a port-Hamiltonian systems and by invoking the second law of thermodynamics, we can characterize the external power supply needed to generate an optimal state estimate. We also show how the required external power supply can be decreased by allowing the filter to perturb the measured system to a larger extent. Hence, it is possible to decrease the so-called back action of the filter by spending more energy. We illustrate our results using passive electric circuits. © 2014 IEEE.

A compound-structure permanent-magnet synchronous machine (CS-PMSM), which integrates two PMSMs, is a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) power train concept. In order to meet the requirement of wide speed range of HEV, an axialaxial flux CS-PMSM with a new mechanical method of varying air gap to fulfill field-weakening control and to improve the operating speed range is investigated. The field-weakening principle of the axial-axial flux CS-PMSM with varying air gap is analyzed. The electromagnetic performances with air gaps varying are evaluated by 3D finite-element method (FEM). The principle of selecting original air gap is proposed with comprehensive consideration. The field weakening capability by varying air gap is evaluated based on the comparison with two other electric methods.
