This paper presents an efficient approach for solving the economic load dispatch (ELD) problem with valve-point effect using a new hybrid optimization algorithm. The main aim for solving ELD problem is to schedule the output of the committed generating units in order to meet the system load under various operating constraints. Since ELD is a non-linear and non-convex problem, stochastic search algorithms are considered as appropriate solutions. In this paper, the proposed new hybrid optimization algorithm is based on Clonal Selection Algorithm (CSA) that uses the positive features of two other optimization techniques, Gases Brownian Motion Optimization (GBMO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), for local search and improving the quality of initial population, respectively. To validate the efficiency of the proposed hybrid method, termed as PG-Clonal in this paper, we tested it on two systems considering different constraints, and the obtained results are compared with the results of existing stochastic search algorithms available in the literature. The test results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed new hybrid PG-Clonal method in solving the ELD problem efficiently.

Cooperative behaviors are ubiquitous in nature and human *** is very important to understand the internal mechanism of emergence and maintenance of *** we know now,the offsprings inherit not only the phenotype but also the neighborhood relationship of their *** recent research results show that the interactions among individuals facilitate survival of cooperation through network reciprocity of clustering *** paper aims at introducing an inheritance mechanism of neighborhood relationship to explore the evolution of *** detail,a mathematical model is proposed to characterize the evolutionary process with the above inheritance *** analysis and numerical simulations indicate that high-level cooperation can emerge and be maintained for a wide variety of cost-to-benefit ratios,even if mutation happens during the evolving process.

This paper studies semi-global leader-following output consensus of a multi-agent system. Each follower agent in the system, described by a general linear system subject to external disturbances and actuator saturation, is to track the leader agent. Conditions on the agent dynamics are identified under which a low gain feedback based linear state control algorithm is constructed for each follower agent such that the leader-following output consensus is achieved when the communication topology among the agents is a directed graph that contains no loop and the leader is globally reachable. In addition, discussions and simulations are also provided for the output consensus in the presence of actuator saturation.

In this paper, we investigate fundamental limits for physical implementations of the Kalman-Bucy filter for state estimation of a class of linear port-Hamiltonian systems. In particular, for the studied class of systems we show the Kalman-Bucy filter itself is a port-Hamiltonian systems and by invoking the second law of thermodynamics, we can characterize the external power supply needed to generate an optimal state estimate. We also show how the required external power supply can be decreased by allowing the filter to perturb the measured system to a larger extent. Hence, it is possible to decrease the so-called back action of the filter by spending more energy. We illustrate our results using passive electric circuits.

Understanding the dynamics of human movements is key to issues of significant current interest such as behavioral prediction, recommendation, and control of epidemic spreading. We collect and analyze big data sets of human movements in both cyberspace (through browsing of websites) and physical space (through mobile towers) and find a superlinear scaling relation between the mean frequency of visit 〈f〉 and its fluctuation σ:σ∼〈f〉β with β≈1.2. The probability distribution of the visiting frequency is found to be a stretched exponential function. We develop a model incorporating two essential ingredients, preferential return and exploration, and show that these are necessary for generating the scaling relation extracted from real data. A striking finding is that human movements in cyberspace and physical space are strongly correlated, indicating a distinctive behavioral identifying characteristic and implying that the behaviors in one space can be used to predict those in the other.

We propose a continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI QKD) protocol, in which detection is conducted by an untrusted third party. Our protocol can defend all detector side channels, which seriously threaten the security of a practical CV QKD system. Its security analysis against arbitrary collective attacks is derived based on the fact that the entanglement-based scheme of CV-MDI QKD is equivalent to the conventional CV QKD with coherent states and heterodyne detection. We find that the maximal total transmission distance is achieved by setting the untrusted third party close to one of the legitimate users. Furthermore, an alternate detection scheme, a special application of CV-MDI QKD, is proposed to enhance the security of the standard CV QKD system.

OFDM is promising for underwater acoustic (UWA) communications due to its potential to combat the large delay spread. However, the performance of the OFDM system is seriously deteriorated by the inter-carrier interference (ICI) caused by the transmitter/receiver motion and ocean waves. In this paper, we propose a novel ICI countermeasure. The key idea is to inactivate partial subcarriers according to index modulation and meanwhile transmit signals with opposite polarity on two adjacent active subcarriers for ICI self cancellation. Simulation results validate that the proposed scheme achieves much better bit error rate (BER) performance than many existing schemes in UWA communications.

The paper proposes a new learning method for fuzzy cognitive maps, which makes it possible to encode an attractor into the map. The method is based on the principle of backpropagation through time known from the theory of artificial neural networks. Simulation results are presented to show how well the method performs. It is shown that the results are superior to those achieved using Hebbian learning approaches such as nonlinear Hebbian learning. Some lines for possible future research and development are given.

The goal of the work presented here is to influence the overall behaviour of specific animal societies by integrating computational mechatronic devices (robots) into those societies. To do so, these devices should be accepted by the animals aspart of the society and/or as part of the collectively formed environment. For that, we have developed two sets of robotic hardware for integrating into societies of two different animals: zebra fish and young honeybees. We also developed mechanisms to provide feedback from the behaviours of societies for the controllers of the robotic system. Two different computational methods are then used as the controllers of the robots in simulation and successfully adapted by evolutionary algorithms to influence the simulated animals for desired behaviours. Together, these advances in mechatronic hardware, feedback mechanisms, and controller methodology are laying essential foundations to facilitate experiments on modulating self-organised behaviour in mixed animal -- robot societies.
