The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is one of the most widely used techniques for image compression. Several algorithms are proposed to implement the DCT-2D. The scaled SDCT algorithm is an optimization of the DCT-1D, which consists in gathering all the multiplications at the end. In this paper, in addition to the hardware implementation on an FPGA, an extended optimization has been performed by merging the multiplications in the quantization block without having an impact on the image quality. Tests using MATLAB environment have shown that our proposed approach produces images with quality comparable to the ones obtained using the JPEG standard. FPGA-based implementations of this proposed approach and the Loeffler's algorithm are proposed and compared in this paper using an Altera Startix FPGA family with the synthesis and implementation tool Quartus II. Results show that our approach outperforms the well known Loeffler's algorithm in terms of processing-speed and resources used.

The article main focus is on the identification of a graphical model from time series data associated with different interconnected entities. The time series are modeled as realizations of stochastic processes (representing nodes of a graph) linked together via transfer functions (representing the edges of the graph). Both the cases of non-causal and causal links are considered. By using only the measurements of the node outputs and without assuming any prior knowledge of the network topology, a method is provided to estimate the graph connectivity. In particular, it is proven that the method determines links to be present only between a node and its “kins”, where kins of a node consist of parents, children and co-parents (other parents of all of its children) in the graph. With the additional hypothesis of strictly casual links, a similar method is provided that allows one to exactly reconstruct the original graph. Main tools for determining the network topology are based on Wiener, Wiener-Hopf and Granger filtering. Analogies with the problem of Compressing Sensing are drawn and two greedy algorithms to address the problem of reducing the complexity of the network structure are also suggested.

Abstract Experiment design for quantum channel parameter estimation includes the design of the quantum input to the channel and the observables to be applied on the resulting quantum output system, called the experiment configuration. An experiment design procedure based on maximizing the Fisher information of the qubit Pauli channel parameters is presented in this paper. It can be shown that the Fisher information is a convex function in both the input and the experiment configuration parameters. This leads to an optimal setting that includes pure input states and projective measurements directed towards the channel directions. An iterative method of estimating the channel directions is also proposed.

In this paper, the distributed robust output regulation problem of linear multi-agent systems (MAS) is considered. The driving force from the active leaders or the environmental disturbances is formulated as an input of an exogenous system (or exosystem) of the considered multi-agent networks. A systematic distributed design approach is proposed to handle output regulation via dynamic output feedback with the help of canonical internal model (IM). With common solutions of regulator equations and Lyapunov functions, the distributed robust output regulation with switching interconnection topology is designed to achieve collective aims.

Pursuit-evasion games are an important problem in robotics and control, but games with many players are difficult to analyze and solve. This paper studies a game of multiple pursuers cooperating to capture a single evader in a bounded, convex, polytope in the plane. We present a decentralized control scheme based on the Voronoi partion of the game domain, where the pursuers jointly minimize the area of the evader's Voronoi cell. We prove that capturing the evader is guaranteed under this scheme regardless of the evader's actions, and show simulation results demonstrating the pursuit strategy.

This paper presents a simple and novel sensorless scheme for five-phase induction motor control. The power measurement is used for speed computation. The drive is controlled using direct torque control (DTC). Speed sensorless control scheme is tested under speed variation and load changes. The control method is simulated and implemented in real time on the DS1103 board.

Ramp metering is an effective tool for traffic management on freeway networks. In this paper, we apply iterative learning control (ILC) to address ramp metering in a macroscopic-level freeway environment. By formulating the original ramp metering problem as an output regulating and disturbance rejection problem, ILC has been applied to control the traffic response. The learning mechanism is further combined with Asservissement Linéaire d'Entrée Autoroutière (ALINEA) in a complementary manner to achieve the desired control performance. The ILC-based ramp metering strategy and the modified modularized ramp metering approach based on ILC and ALINEA in the presence of input constraints are also analyzed to highlight the advantages and the robustness of the proposed methods. Extensive simulations are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

We earlier introduced a novel framework for realization of Adaptive Autonomy (AA) in human-automation interaction (HAI). This study presents an expert system for realization of AA, using Support Vector Machine (SVM), referred to as Adaptive Autonomy Support Vector Machine Expert System (AASVMES). The proposed system prescribes proper Levels of Automation (LOAs) for various environmental conditions, here modeled as Performance Shaping Factors (PSFs), based on the extracted rules from the experts' judgments. SVM is used as an expert system inference engine. The practical list of PSFs and the judgments of GTEDC's (the Greater Tehran Electric Distribution Company) experts are used as expert system database. The results of implemented AASVMES in response to GTEDC's network are evaluated against the GTEDC experts' judgment. Evaluations show that AASVMES has the ability to predict the proper LOA for GTEDC's Utility Management Automation (UMA) system, which changes in relevance to the changes in PSFs; thus providing an adaptive LOA scheme for UMA.

In this paper, a low power and fast DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) using multiplier-less method is presented with a new modified FGA (Flow-Graph Algorithm), which is derived from our previously presented FGA of DCT based on Loeffler algorithm. The multiplier-less method is based on the replacement of multiplications with a minimum number of additions and shifts. The proposed FGA is performed and compared to a previous one. The results of FPGA implementations on Altera Cyclone II show the increase of the maximum frequency, the decrease of the resources usage and the reduction of the dynamic power by 7.2 % at 120 MHz of clock frequency with a new proposed FGA algorithm. Another comparison with recent published results has been done and proves the efficiency of the proposed FGA.
