An analysis of machine learning algorithms in rotating machines maintenance

The industrial maintenance activities represent an increase in production costs, mainly caused by unnecessary production stops. Recent technologies approaches are handling the continuous monitoring of industrial machines, storing sensors data, and also maintenance history. More data analysis is necessary specifically for rotating machines presenting methodologies to reduce the maintenance. In order to handle this problem, a comparative analysis of machine learning methods is presented. The strategy aims to predict failures and then indicates the maintenance necessity before a break occurs. Thus, it is applied and analyzed the specific machine learning algorithms, Gradient Boosting and Random Forest, using a dataset of rotation machines. The results show that both methods have an excellent performance (metrics accuracy, precision, and recall), with slightly better results in Gradient Boosting (hit rate of 99.93%) indicating the prominent application of these algorithms in this industrial scenario.

The performance of a battery pack is greatly affected by an imbalance between the cells. Cell balancing is a very important criterion for Battery Management System (BMS) to operate properly. This paper presents the various cell balancing topologies which have been presented by various researchers in the past years. A novel topology has also been discussed, which improves the overall efficiency of the components being used. Various comparison parameters such as Control, Speed, Efficiency, Power Effects, Manufacturability, Size, and Cost have been considered.

Small object detection (SOD) in optical images and videos is a challenging problem that even state-of-the-art generic object detection methods fail to accurately localize and identify such objects. Typically, small objects appear in real-world due to large camera-object distance. Because small objects occupy only a small area in the input image (e.g., less than 10%), the information extracted from such a small area is not always rich enough to support decision making. Multidisciplinary strategies are being developed by researchers working at the interface of deep learning and computer vision to enhance the performance of SOD deep learning based methods. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of over 160 research papers published between 2017 and 2022 in order to survey this growing subject. This paper summarizes the existing literature and provide a taxonomy that illustrates the broad picture of current research. We investigate how to improve the performance of small object detection in maritime environments, where increasing performance is critical. By establishing a connection between generic and maritime SOD research, future directions have been identified. In addition, the popular datasets that have been used for SOD for generic and maritime applications are discussed, and also well-known evaluation metrics for the state-of-the-art methods on some of the datasets are provided. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Image denoising has been used in various edge computing scenarios such as consumer electronics to improve the image quality and user experience. Existing image denoising methods based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and vision Transformers achieve good performance by empirically utilizing residual neural network (ResNet) as basic component. However, ResNet lacks interpretability in network design and also long-term memory of features, potentially restricting the performance of denoising networks. In this paper, we propose an Implicit Multi-scale Swin Transformer Network (IMSNet) for image denoising, which introduces the implicit Euler scheme from the feature memory perspective. Specifically, densely connected implicit feature extraction blocks (IFEBs) are designed to learn the residual mapping between noisy and clean images. The IFEB reformulates the initial skip connection of ResNet based on the implicit Euler discretization, providing both network interpretability and long-term memory. In IFEB, the multi-scale swin Transformer block (MSB) is designed as the implicit layer to capture spatial details and non-local contextual information at different scales. Additionally, a cross-layer feature fusion block (CLFF) is proposed to further improve feature reuse capabilities. Compared to existing denoising networks, the extensive experiments demonstrate the superior performance of our IMSNet in various image denoising tasks, and the flexibility in the practical applications with proposed light model on resource-restricted platforms such as consumer electronic devices. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Photovoltaic systems (PV) are exposed to various weather conditions during the day and getting the maximum power of a PV system is one of its major challenges. While the conventional methods take time to track the maximum power accompanying the fluctuation around the maximum power. Consequently, several metaheuristic algorithms have been presented to overcome the fluctuating around the maximum power. On the other hand optimization methods will search into entire the PV curve to extract the maximum power. This leads to unnecessary search points during the uniform shading conditions which decrease the convergence speed towards the maximum power. In overcoming the tracking time issues as well as the capacity to distinguish between uniform and partial shading conditions, a quick and efficient tracking technique connected to the grid system was presented in this paper. The proposed system, has been tested using MATLAB/SIMULINK, which includes a boost converter to track the maximum power with a sampling time of 0.05 seconds, While a voltage source converter (VSC) is used to transfer the power generated by solar panels to the grid. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed method was successfully implemented, with an average tracking time of 0.412 s for different weather conditions. Moreover, the comparison with the conventional method of perturb and observe (P& O) has been presented to evaluate the proposed method’s efficiency.

Security is one of the main concerns when designing future 6G networks. Most of the components of service chains are software-based and their security must be ensured. In this work we propose a system that will check the level of trust of 6G services following 3 complementary approaches: attestation, generation of proofs of transit and usage of smart contracts whose execution will be published via Distributed Ledger Technology in order to enable their traceability. The service orchestration function will use reinforcement learning to formulate optimised service orchestration decisions. Services will be specified in a declarative model, following a privacy-aware flavour of intent-based networking. The proposed architecture will take into account privacy of every stakeholder: final users, service providers and infrastructure providers.

This work investigates the potential of evolving an initial seed with Grammatical Evolution (GE), for the construction of cryptographically secure (CS) pseudo-random number generator (PRNG). We harness the flexibility of GE as an entropy source for returning initial seeds. The initial seeds returned by GE demonstrate an average entropy value of 7.920261600000001 which is extremely close to the ideal value of 8. The initial seed combined with our proposed approach, control_flow_incrementor, is used to construct both, GE-PRNG and GE-CSPRNG. The random numbers generated with CSPRNG meet the prescribed National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) SP800-22 requirements. Monte Carlo simulations established the efficacy of the PRNG. The experimental setup was designed to estimate the value for pi, in which 100,000,000 random numbers were generated by our system and which resulted in returning the value of pi to 3.146564000, with a precision up to six decimal digits. The random numbers by GE-PRNG were compared against those generated by Python’s rand() function for sampling. The sampling results, when measured for accuracy against twenty-nine real world regression datasets, showed that GE-PRNG had less error when compared to Python’s rand() against the ground truths in seventeen of those, while there was no discernible difference in the remaining twelve. © 2021, CC BY.

The growing scale of marine exploration requires high-resolution underwater localization, which necessitates cooperation among underwater network nodes, considering the channel complexity and power efficiency. In this paper, we proposed factor graph weight particles aided distributed underwater nodes cooperative positioning algorithm (WP-DUCP). It capitalized on the factor graph and sum-product algorithm to decompose the global optimization to the product of several local optimization functions. Combined with the Gaussian parameters to construct the weighted particles and to realize the belief transfer, it shows low complexity and high efficiency, suitable to the energy-restricted and communication distance-limited underwater networks. In terms of convergence, localization resolution, and computation complexity, we conducted the simulation and real-test with comparison to the existing co-localization methods. The results verified a higher resolution of the proposed method with no extra computation burden. © 2021, CC BY.

This paper reports on the NTIRE 2024 Quality Assessment of AI-Generated Content Challenge, which will be held in conjunction with the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement Workshop (NTIRE) at CVPR 2024. This challenge is to address a major challenge in the field of image and video processing, namely, Image Quality Assessment (IQA) and Video Quality Assessment (VQA) for AI-Generated Content (AIGC). The challenge is divided into the image track and the video track. The image track uses the AIGIQA-20K, which contains 20,000 AI-Generated Images (AIGIs) generated by 15 popular generative models. The image track has a total of 318 registered participants. A total of 1,646 submissions are received in the development phase, and 221 submissions are received in the test phase. Finally, 16 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. The video track uses the T2VQA-DB, which contains 10,000 AI-Generated Videos (AIGVs) generated by 9 popular Text-to-Video (T2V) models. A total of 196 participants have registered in the video track. A total of 991 submissions are received in the development phase, and 185 submissions are received in the test phase. Finally, 12 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. Some methods have achieved better results than baseline methods, and the winning methods in both tracks have demonstrated superior prediction performance on AIGC. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Drone security is currently a major topic of discussion among researchers and industrialists. Although there are multiple applications of drones, if the security challenges are not anticipated and required architectural changes are not made, the upcoming drone applications will not be able to serve their actual purpose. Therefore, in this paper, we present a detailed review of the security-critical drone applications, and security-related challenges in drone communication such as DoS attacks, Man-in-the-middle attacks, De-Authentication attacks, and so on. Furthermore, as part of solution architectures, the use of Blockchain, software Defined Networks (SDN), Machine Learning, and Fog/Edge computing are discussed as these are the most emerging technologies. Drones are highly resource-constrained devices and therefore it is not possible to deploy heavy security algorithms on board. Blockchain can be used to cryptographically store all the data that is sent to/from the drones, thereby saving it from tampering and eavesdropping. Various ML algorithms can be used to detect malicious drones in the network and to detect safe routes. Additionally, the SDN technology can be used to make the drone network reliable by allowing the controller to keep a close check on data traffic, and fog computing can be used to keep the computation capabilities closer to the drones without overloading them. © 2021, CC BY.
