The inspection of products and assessment of quality is connected with high costs and time effort in many industrial domains. This also applies to the forestry industry. Utilizing state-of-the-art deep learning models allows automizing the analysis of wooden piles in a vision-based manner. In this work, a parallel two-step approach is presented for the segmentation and multi-facet classification of individual logs, according to the wood type and quality. The present approach is based on a preliminary log localization step and like this allows determining the quality, volume and also the value of individual logs, respectively the whole wooden pile. Using a YOLOv4 model for wood species classification for douglas firs, pines and larches results in an accuracy of 74.53%, while a quality classification model for spruce logs reaches 86.58%. In addition to that, the trained U-NET segmentation model reaches an accuracy of 93%. In the future, the underlying data set and models will be further improved and integrated to a mobile application for the on site analysis of wooden piles by foresters. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Many different dynamic routing architectures are available, including sidecar-based routing, routing through a central entity such as an event store or gateway, or architectures with multiple routers. These architectures are currently based on vastly different implementation concepts, such as API Gateways, Message Brokers, or Service Proxies. We propose a new approach that abstracts all these architecture patterns using one Adaptive Dynamic Routers architecture. We hypothesize that a dynamic self-adaptation of the routing architecture is beneficial over any fixed architecture selections for reliability and performance trade-offs. That is, if encountered with traffic and load changes, our approach dynamically self-adapts between more central or distributed routing to optimize system reliability and performance. We evaluate our approach by analyzing our previously-measured data during an experiment of 1200 hours of runtime. Our extensive systematic evaluation with 1089 cases confirms that our hypothesis holds and our approach is beneficial in terms of reliability and performance. Moreover, we empirically validate our results on Google Cloud Platform infrastructure.

This research presents a strategy to optimize per-formance of the conventional power grid systems incorporating photovoltaic and wind energy sources using Dynamic Economic Load Dispatch (ELD). The proposed model tackles the uncertain and variable characteristics of wind and solar power outputs by accounting for disparities between observed and forecasted power outputs leveraging General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS)-based optimization. The approach seeks to reduce the overall operational expenses of generators while effectively distributing power generation to committed units. This methodology is applied to a power system incorporating the solar and wind plant linked to 3 and 6 generating units, respectively. The outcomes of simulations carried out in GAMS substantiate the efficacy of the proposed approach in terms of least fuel cost. GAMS is a commercial package deployed to optimize the ELD problem effectively with an easy-to-use interface which efficiently finds the optimal results using non-linear programming solver.

Context: Global software development (GSD) offers quality results, cost-effectiveness, and uninterrupted project delivery. However, integrating security into GSD remains a ***: This study aims to enhance security in GSD projects by developing a hybrid approach using an empirical survey and Interpretive Structural Model (ISM).Methods: Initially, we conduct a systematic literature review and questionnaire survey with 50 GSD security experts. Moreover, 13 experts were invited to analyze the interrelationships among the practices using ***: Initially, we identified 13 major security-coding risks and 82 practices to mitigate these risks. The ISM analysis revealed that out of the identified security-coding practices, "never submit security measures to illegitimate authority", "avoiding buffer overflow and format string vulnerabilities", "control the brute force attack", and "identify a middleman attack" were considered fully dependent. NASA is designing and building a low-cost, scalable, rapidly developed test platform to lower the barrier to entry for entry, descent, and landing (EDL) technologies. This HyperSonic Testing for Entry Platform, HyperSTEP, will enable the low-cost flight demonstration of hypersonic entry technologies, leveraging a publishable government reference design to further enable future government and industry landers. The HyperSTEP vehicle leverages a lifting body shape that was originally designed for a NASA human-class Mars mission concept vehicle, the CobraMRV. Lifting body vehicles offer increased volume efficiency and greater range control capabilities over capsules, making them an attractive class of vehicles to further develop for small to large payload return missions from the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Progress has been made in the development of the HyperSTEP vehicle in the areas of aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, structural design and packaging, propulsion, guidance navigation and control (GN&C), decelerators (i.e., parachutes), and the thermal protection system (TPS). This paper details progress made in refining the mission concept of operations (ConOps) for the first notional missions and the development of the aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic databases, GN&C, and parachute system, as the project moves into its build and test phase. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. The literature on generative “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) in education primarily focuses on its immediate benefits and applications, such as personalized learning, student engagement, and content generation. However, there is a notable absence of empirical research concerning the holistic use of generative AI within educational institutions and its long-term impact on educational sustainability. This study investigates the factors that predict the use of generative AI and its subsequent influence on educational sustainability. This study enhanced the extended “Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology” (UTAUT-2) by including personal innovativeness as an external variable and educational sustainability as an outcome. A hybrid methodology, integrating “Structural Equation Modeling” (SEM) and “Artificial Neural Network” (ANN), was used to evaluate the research model using data collected from 1,011 university students. The SEM analysis confirmed all hypotheses. Specifically, a positive relationship was found between use behavior and educational sustainability. These results show that the combined variables collectively account for 63% and 66% of the variance in use behavior and educational sustainability, respectively. The sensitivity analysis identified habit as the most important predictor of use behavior. The findings offer both theoretically important and practically valuable implications for designing user-centered AI integration in education. © Association for Educational Communications & Technology 2025.

This position paper summarizes the inputs of a group of experts from academia and industry presenting their view on chances and challenges of using ChatGPT within Modeling and Simulation education. The experts also address the need to evaluate continuous education as well as education of faculty members to address scholastic challenges and opportunities while meeting the expectation of industry. Generally, the use of ChatGPT is encouraged, but it needs to be embedded into an updated curriculum with more emphasis on validity constraints, systems thinking, and ethics. © 2023 IEEE.

Autonomously flying unmanned aerial vehicles in logistics, agriculture, and other domains will take up considerable airspace in the future. In areas with a high amount of air traffic, ground coordination to detect and mitigate encounters with collision risks is required. We propose a serverless approach to build and deploy such a system using edge computing resources. Serverless abstractions allow domain experts to focus on implementing the application logic while the underlying platform manages constrained resources and low-latency service access.

With recent improvements in deep-learning architectures and availability of GPU hardware, state of the art deep learning (DL) has already manifested as powerful image processing technology in the clinical routine to provide segmentation results of high accuracy. As a drawback, it's black-box nature does not naturally feature inspection and post-processing by medical experts. We present a Graph segmentation (GS) approach that derives it's fitness function from arbitrary DL results in a generic way. To allow for efficient and effective post-processing by the medical experts, various interaction paradigms are presented and evaluated in this paper. The trade-off of GS compared to the initial DL results is marginal (delta JI= 0.196%), yet potential DL segmentation errors can be corrected in a reliable way. The intuitive approach shows a high level of both, inter and intra user reproducibility. Change propagation of corrected slices keeps the demand for user-interaction to a minimum when successfully correction potential weaknesses in the DL segmentations. Thereby, the formerly error-prone slice mini-batches get corrected in an automated way with the JI being significantly increased. © 2021 The Authors.
