Efficient Diffusion-Driven Corruption Editor for Test-Time Adaptation

Test-time adaptation (TTA) addresses the unforeseen distribution shifts occurring during test time. In TTA, performance, memory consumption, and time consumption are crucial considerations. A recent diffusion-based TTA approach for restoring corrupted images involves image-level updates. However, using pixel space diffusion significantly increases resource requirements compared to conventional model updating TTA approaches, revealing limitations as a TTA method. To address this, we propose a novel TTA method that leverages an image editing model based on a latent diffusion model (LDM) and fine-tunes it using our newly introduced corruption modeling scheme. This scheme enhances the robustness of the diffusion model against distribution shifts by creating (clean, corrupted) image pairs and fine-tuning the model to edit corrupted images into clean ones. Moreover, we introduce a distilled variant to accelerate the model for corruption editing using only 4 network function evaluations (NFEs). We extensively validated our method across various architectures and datasets including image and video domains. Our model achieves the best performance with a 100 times faster runtime than that of a diffusion-based baseline. Furthermore, it is three times faster than the previous model updating TTA method that utilizes data augmentation, making an image-level updating approach more feasible. ∗ © 2024, CC BY.

The Neural Networks (NN) model which is incorporated in the control system design has been studied, and the results show better performance than the mathematical model approach. However, some studies consider that only offline NN model learning and does not use the online NN model learning directly on the control system. As a result, the controller's performance decreases due to changes in the system environment from time to time. The Reinforcement Learning (RL) method has been investigated intensively, especially Model-based RL (Mb-RL) to predict system dynamics. It has been investigated and performs well in making the system more robust to environmental changes by enabling online learning. This paper proposes online learning of local dynamics using the Mb-RL method by utilizing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. We consider Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme as an agent of the Mb-RL method to control the regulatory trajectory objectives with a random shooting policy to search for the minimum objective function. A nonlinear Mass Spring Damper (NMSD) system with parameter-varying linear inertia is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the system can effectively control high-oscillating nonlinear systems with good performance.

Quantum illumination (QI) provides entanglement-enabled target-detection enhancement, despite operating in an entanglement-breaking environment. Existing experimental studies of QI have utilized a Bayesian approach, assuming that the target is equally likely to be present or absent before detection, to demonstrate an advantage over classical target detection. However, such a premise breaks down in practical operational scenarios in which the prior probability is unknown, thereby hindering QI's applicability to real-world target-detection scenarios. In this work, we adopt the Neyman-Pearson criterion in lieu of the error probability for equally likely target absence or presence as our figure of merit for QI. We demonstrate an unconditional quantum advantage over the optimal classical-illumination protocol as benchmarked by the receiver operating characteristic, which examines detection probability versus false-alarm probability without resorting to known prior probabilities. In this report, we apply a suite of ultrafast spectroscopic techniques and advanced calculations to reveal the interplay between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in ferroelectric BiFeO3. Using transient sum frequency generation spectroscopy, which is sensitive to electronic polarizations, we observe a transient electronic dipole reduction upon optical excitation which recovers at 0.5 and 10 ps timescale. The time-dependent density functional theory calculation reveals that both ligand-metal charge transfer and local excitation transition occurred upon photo excitation. To reveal the nature of electronic dipole restoration, we employ transient extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopy—an element-specific ultrafast technique that follows charge dynamics of Bi, Fe, and O altogether. The transient EUV dynamics observed both ultrafast free charge carrier relaxation to excitons, as well as polaron formation. However, a timescale comparison suggests that only the polaron formation is responsible for the 0.5 ps electronic dipole restoration, whereas the faster electronic relaxation does not contribute to the ferroelectric property changes. Multireference configuration interaction calculation further corroborates this result by showing both Fe and Bi atoms shift from the ground state equilibrium—leading to the polaron formation. Our result disentangles the multidegrees of freedom in ultrafast ferroelectric modulation and identifies the pivotal motion—a local polaron formation—for the fast ferroelectric recovery. It provides crucial insights on the specific lattice distortion that could modulate properties or phase transitions of condensed matter materials.

In many areas of electronics design, it is necessary to understand the different aspects of capacitance associated with various conducting surfaces in a particular layout. This is because as operating frequencies increase and dimensions decrease, capacitive coupling can become the dominant means in which noise is induced in a design. Therefore, having the ability to extract an equivalent circuit for modeling capacitive coupling and understanding the coupling can be very important, and challenging. This paper presents insight on capacitive coupling by evaluating the capacitance between two parallel plates, with particular attention paid to the self-capacitance (with a reference at infinity) of each of the individual plates. More specifically, the Partial Element Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) method is used to compute the self-capacitance of each individual plate in the parallel plate capacitor problem, and results are verified by comparison to values from James C. Maxwell's original works and the electrostatic solver ANSYS Maxwell 3D. Overall, it is shown how the self-capacitance of each individual plate changes as a function of distance between the parallel plates. © 2022 IEEE.

Video Frame Interpolation (VFI) aims to synthesize intermediate frames between existing frames to enhance visual smoothness and quality. Beyond the conventional methods based on the reconstruction loss, recent works have employed generative models for improved perceptual quality. However, they require complex training and large computational costs for pixel space modeling. In this paper, we introduce disentangled Motion Modeling (MoMo), a diffusion-based approach for VFI that enhances visual quality by focusing on intermediate motion modeling. We propose a disentangled two-stage training process. In the initial stage, frame synthesis and flow models are trained to generate accurate frames and flows optimal for synthesis. In the subsequent stage, we introduce a motion diffusion model, which incorporates our novel U-Net architecture specifically designed for optical flow, to generate bi-directional flows between frames. By learning the simpler low-frequency representation of motions, MoMo achieves superior perceptual quality with reduced computational demands compared to the generative modeling methods on the pixel space. MoMo surpasses state-of-the-art methods in perceptual metrics across various benchmarks, demonstrating its efficacy and efficiency in VFI. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

In this paper we consider a stochastic SEIQR (susceptible-exposed-infected-quarantined-recovered) epidemic model with a generalized incidence function. Using the Lyapunov method, we establish the existence and uniqueness of a global positive solution to the model, ensuring that it remains well-defined over time. Through the application of Young’s inequality and Chebyshev’s inequality, we demonstrate the concepts of stochastic ultimate boundedness and stochastic permanence, providing insights into the long-term behavior of the epidemic dynamics under random perturbations. Furthermore, we derive conditions for stochastic extinction, which describes scenarios where the epidemic may eventually die out, and V-geometric ergodicity, which indicates the rate at which the system’s state converges to its equilibrium. Finally, we perform numerical simulations to verify our theoretical results and assess the model’s behavior under different parameters. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Human cognitive processes remain an area of strong interest and ongoing research. One tool to gain greater insight into this process is neuronal modeling. The following features are desirable in a neuronal modeling tool: a library of known parameters for different neurons and species, the ability to select the neuron and species of interest, the ability to quickly simulate neuronal behavior, and the ability to calculate metabolic requirements and efficiencies for various neuronal activity. Many of these can be found in software today, but not all elements can be found in one entity. The goal of this work is to develop a neuronal modeling tool that incorporates these features. © 2022 IEEE.

This research-to-practice paper describes developing and analyzing state-of-the-art smart boots created by combining CAD technology and advanced 3D printing techniques to attract students in bio-engineering and related fields. The primary objective of this innovative immobilization boot is to expedite fracture recovery phases through an ergonomic design to ensure optimal patient comfort during its use. Technological solutions are crucial in aiding the rehabilitation process for fractures caused by falls, heavy lifting, or rotational trauma. However, cost and comfort-related issues persist, underscoring the need for alternative approaches. This research addresses these challenges and delves into the broader implications of fracture treatment, catalyzing future projects and investigations in bioengineering. Additionally, this study serves as an educational tool that sparks the interest of high school and engineering students, promoting multidisciplinary collaboration in innovation. By involving students in specialized courses covering 3D design, human bone anatomy, biology, and materials science, this initiative empowers them to deepen their knowledge and develop new technologies to address bone injury problems. Material analyses include evaluating the type of material depending on the fracture site, such as PLA for printing and cotton and silicone gel for the midsection between the splint and the body. This research aims to advance our understanding of the type of fracture, the methods associated with their treatment, and tissue repair processes during bone callus formation.
