The boost converter-based AC/DC power factor correction converter, characterized by its simple structure and control ease, is extensively employed as a pre-stage converter in industrial power supply applications. Commercial products must pass relevant electromagnetic compatibility tests to ensure that the electromagnetic interference energy generated by their switching power converters comply with corresponding standards, such as IEC60950. In a boost converter, the primary noise sources include the pulse current generated when switching the power switch and the high-voltage, high-frequency square wave. The high-voltage, high-frequency square wave exhibits a high dv/dt at the "on" and "off" transients of the power switch, generating several high-frequency harmonics. Here, we propose an innovative winding method for toroidal inductors, demonstrating the potential to increase resonance frequency by over 50% and mitigate electromagnetic interference emissions more effectively than conventional winding processes.

Effective Dimension Aware Fractional-Order Stochastic Gradient Descent for Convex Optimization Problems

Fractional-order stochastic gradient descent (FOSGD) leverages a fractional exponent to capture long-memory effects in optimization, yet its practical impact is often constrained by the difficulty of tuning and stabilizing this exponent. In this work, we introduce 2SED Fractional-Order Stochastic Gradient Descent (2SEDFOSGD), a novel method that synergistically combines the Two-Scale Effective Dimension (2SED) algorithm with FOSGD to automatically calibrate the fractional exponent in a data-driven manner. By continuously gauging model sensitivity and effective dimensionality, 2SED dynamically adjusts the exponent to curb erratic oscillations and enhance convergence rates. Theoretically, we demonstrate how this dimension-aware adaptation retains the benefits of fractional memory while averting the sluggish or unstable behaviors frequently observed in naive fractional SGD. Empirical evaluations across multiple benchmarks confirm that our 2SED-driven fractional exponent approach not only converges faster but also achieves more robust final performance, suggesting broad applicability for fractional-order methodologies in large-scale machine learning and related domains. © 2025, CC BY.

We propose 2SED Fractional-Order Stochastic Gradient Descent (2SEDFOSGD), which integrates the Two-Scale Effective Dimension (2SED) algorithm with FOSGD to adapt the fractional exponent in a data-driven manner. By tracking model sensitivity and effective dimensionality, 2SEDFOSGD dynamically modulates the exponent to mitigate oscillations and hasten convergence. Theoretically, for onoconvex optimization problems, this approach preserves the advantages of fractional memory without the sluggish or unstable behavior observed in naïve fractional SGD. Empirical evaluations in Gaussian and α-stable noise scenarios using an autoregressive (AR) model highlight faster convergence and more robust parameter estimates compared to baseline methods, underscoring the potential of dimension-aware fractional techniques for advanced modeling and estimation tasks. © 2025, CC BY.

This work presents a vital sign monitoring interface combining electrocardiogram (ECG) and reflective photoplethysmography (PPG) acquisition on stretchable kinesiology tapes (KTs). The integrated textile bands are less prone to electrode misplacement and deliver high-quality diagnostic ECG signals with dry electrodes. The reflective PPG measured over the subclavian artery is used to track blood oxygen saturation, and in combination with ECG, enables the determination of pulse transit time and inference of blood pressure. This multimodal interface improves clinical workflows because it is easy to don, reduces motion artifacts, and facilitates more efficient and accurate diagnosis in emergency settings. © 2022 IEEE.

Global distribution of forest classes and leaf biomass for use as alternative foods to minimize malnutrition

Due to the ready availability of tree leaves in many geographies, the alternative food of leaf concentrate currently has the potential to alleviate hunger in over 800 million people. It is therefore potentially highly impactful to determine the edibility of leaf concentrates, which are in the same regions as the world's most undernourished populations. Unfortunately, the toxicity of leaf concentrate for most common tree leaf types has not been screened and the cost of doing so demands a prioritization. This preliminary study explores this potential solution to world hunger by finding the forest classes most likely to offer proximate access to the world's hungry, thus providing the basis for a prioritized list of leaf types to screen for toxicity. Specifically, this study describes a novel methodology for mapping available green leaf biomass and corresponding forest classes (e.g., tropical moist deciduous forest), and their spatial relationship to the global distribution of people who are underweight. These results will be useful for developing a targeted list of tree species to conduct leaf toxicity analysis on, in the interest of developing leaves as an alternative food source for both current malnutrition problems and global catastrophic scenarios. © 2021 Policy Studies Organization.

Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) Services have significant potential in digital content creation. The distinctive abilities of AIGC, such as content generation based on minimal input, hold huge potential, especially when integrating with semantic communication (SemCom). In this paper, a novel comprehensive conceptual model for the integration of AIGC and SemCom is developed. Particularly, a content generation level is introduced on top of the semantic level that provides a clear outline of how AIGC and SemCom interact with each other to produce meaningful and effective content. Moreover, a novel framework that employs AIGC technology is proposed as an encoder and decoder for semantic information, considering the joint optimization of semantic extraction and evaluation metrics tailored to AIGC services. The framework can adapt to different types of content generated, the required quality and the semantic information utilized. By employing a Deep Q Network (DQN), a case study is presented that provides useful insights into the feasibility of the optimization problem and its convergence characteristics. © 2023, CC BY.

This paper aims to analyze the determinant parameters of Genetic Algorithm (GA) analysis for the optimized control performance of a closed control loop. The determinant parameters of GA optimization analysis cover population size (nPop), mutation rate (mu) and iteration (iter.) are analyzed and justified. The control terminology covers the Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller, a prestigious solution for industrial control applications. Besides, the research proposed stability analysis to determine the upper and lower limit settings for the optimization analysis. The research has begun with model identification, stability analysis and is followed by determining the controller tunings. The performance indexes are applied to compare the response performance of GA with deterministic controller tunings. Analysis results and discussion shows that GA with proper determinant parameters’ settings are performing better than other tuning methods in the closed loop control performance.

The manufacturing process of all-solid-state batteries necessitates the use of polymer ***,these binders,being ionic insulators by nature,can adversely affect charge transport within composite cathodes,thereby impacting the rate performance of the *** this work,we aim to investigate the impact of fabrication methods,specifically the solvent-free dry process versus the slurry-cast wet process,on binder distribution and charge transport in composite cathodes of solid-state *** the dry process,the binder forms a fibrous network,while the wet process results in binder coverage on the surface of cathode active *** difference in microstructure leads to a notable 20-fold increase in ionic conductivity in the dry-processed ***,the cells processed via the dry method exhibit higher capacity retention of 89%and 83%at C/3 and C/2 rates,respectively,in comparison to 68%and 58%for the wet-processed cells at the same *** findings provide valuable insights into the influence of fabrication methods on binder distribution and charge transport,contributing to a better understanding of the binder’s role in manufacturing of all-solid-state batteries.

This study introduced a capacitive sensing interactive game platform aimed at promoting emotional stability, which we have named the “Sunrise and Sunset” game. This game primarily consists of two pieces of regular textile fabric enveloping conductive silver fabric. A microcontroller was employed to extract the sensed capacitive values, and a game named “Sunrise and Sunset” is designed to complement the slow raising and lowering of both hands. The development of this gaming platform has the potential to offer a novel method of emotional management, particularly in high-stress living environments. It can serve as an effective relaxation tool, aiding individuals in emotional balance, anxiety reduction, and stress alleviation. Simultaneously, this platform can contribute to the promotion of mental well-being, providing an engaging and beneficial means for people to manage their emotions and moods.

Understanding the characteristics of depressed speech can provide insights on aspects to consider when developing biomarkers for automatic depression detection systems. We present the results of a speech intelligibility study that was conducted to assess the intelligibility of the speech of a female and a male subject when they were severely depressed and when they were in remission. Our analysis shows that, in general, the depressed speech is at least as intelligible as in-remission speech. This is further supported by the underlying "simpler" articulatory coordination of depressed speech as derived from the Articulatory Coordination Features. Acoustically, the simpler articulatory coordination means that there is less variability due to coarticulation in the speech signal. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
