We consider the classical power management problem: There is a device which has two states ON and OFF and one has to develop a control algorithm for changing between these states as to minimize (energy) cost when given a sequence of service requests. Although an optimal 2-competitive algorithm exists, that algorithm does not have good performance in many practical situations, especially in case the device is not used frequently. To take the frequency of device usage into account, we construct an algorithm based on the concept of "slackness degree." Then by relaxing the worst case competitive ratio of our online algorithm to 2 + Ε, where Ε is an arbitrary small constant, we make the algorithm flexible to slackness. The algorithm thus automatically tunes itself to slackness degree and gives better performance than the optimal 2-competitive algorithm for real world inputs. In addition to worst case competitive ratio analysis, a queueing model analysis is given and computer simulations are reported, confirming that the performance of the algorithm is high. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We propose a simple probabilistic model of zapping process of television viewers. Our model might be regarded as a `theoretical platform' to investigate the human collective behavior in the macroscopic scale through the zapping action of each viewer at the microscopic level. The stochastic process of audience measurements as macroscopic quantities such as television program rating point or the so-called gross rating point (GRP for short) are reconstructed using the microscopic modeling of each viewer's decision making. Assuming that each viewer decides the television station to watch by means of three factors, namely, physical constraints on television controllers, exogenous information such as advertisement of program by television station, and endogenous information given by `word-of-mouth communication' through the past market history, we shall construct an aggregation probability of Gibbs-Boltzmann-type with the energy function. We discuss the possibility for the ingredients of the model system to exhibit the collective behavior due to not exogenous but endogenous information.

Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the network's communication energy dissipation. However, selecting the cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In order to deal with this problem, we have proposed a power reduction algorithm for sensor networks based on fuzzy logic and node movement. The proposed system uses 4 input linguistic parameters: Remaining Power of Sensor (RPS), degree of Number of Neighbor Nodes (D3N), Distance from Cluster Centroid (DCC) and Sensor Speed (SS) for cluster-head decision. We consider for evaluation two cases: when sensors are static and when sensors move. By considering the moving speed of the sensor we are able to predict if the node will leave the cluster. We evaluate the proposed system by simulations and show that it has a good cluster-head selection.

On the basis of statistical mechanics, we introduce a probabilistic model of labor markets for university graduates in Japan. In order to make a model of the market efficiently, we shall take into account the following assumptions. Namely, each company fixes the number of opening positions for newcomers and the number itself is independent of business year. The ability of gathering newcomers depends on the result of matching process in past business years. This fact means that the ability of the company is weaken if the company did not make their quota or the company gathered applicants too much over the quota. All labors, in particular, university graduates who are looking for their jobs can access the public information about the ranking of companies. By assuming the above essential key points, we construct the energy function of each company and describe the probability that an arbitrary company gets students at each business year by a Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution. We evaluate the relevant physical quantities such as the employment rate. We find that the system undergoes a phase transition from the 'good employment phase' to 'poor employment phase' with spontaneous symmetry breaking when one controls the degree of importance for the ranking. With the assistance of a chaotic map for the inflation rate given by Neugart (2004), we also attempt to draw the so-called Philips curve. The condition on which the long-time average of inflation rate becomes negative with high unemployment rate, which might be regard as an indicator for a sort of 'crisis' is discussed. © 2011 SICE.

A highly energy efficient reconfigurable accelerator called CMA (Cool Mega-Array) is proposed. It consists of a large Processing Element (PE) array without memory elements for maintain result of ALU and configuration data, a small simple programmable micro controller for data management, and the data memory. Unlike traditional coarse grained reconfigurable processors, the power consumption for hardware context switching, storing intermediate data in registers, and clock distribution for them are eliminated from PE array which occupies large area of a chip. Configuration registers are collected to small area of micro controller. The data flow graph mapped on the PE array is static during execution. Various application programs can be implemented by making the best use of flexible data management instructions with the micro controller. When the delay time in the PE array is longer than the data handling time with the micro controller, the supply voltage for the PE array is scaled to reduce the power consumption without degrading the performance. In the opposite case, wave pipelining is applied to enhance PE array performance. A prototype chip CMA-1 with 8 × 8 PE array with 24-bit data width was fabricated in 2.1 × 4.2mm2 65-nm CMOS technology, and achieves 2.4-GOPS/11.2-mW sustained performance. This energy efficiency is comparable to that of the most energy efficient accelerators that have been reported. © 2011 IEEE.

Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the network's communication energy dissipation. However, selecting of the cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In our previous work, in order to deal with this problem, we proposed a power reduction algorithm for sensor networks based on fuzzy logic and number of neighbour nodes. We call this algorithm F3N. In this paper, we evaluate F3N and LEACH by many simulation results. We evaluate the performance of our proposed system for tree different parameters: Remaining Battery Power of Sensor (RPS), degree of Number of Neighbour Nodes (D3N), and Distance from Cluster Centroid (DCC). From the simulation results, we found that the probability of a sensor node to be a cluster head is increased with increase of number of neighbour nodes and remained battery power and is decreased with the increase of distance from the cluster centroid.

The Network-on-Chip (NoC) is a promising interconnection for many-core processors. On the NoC-based manycore processors, the network performance of multi-thread programs depends on the method of task mapping. In this paper, we propose a pattern-based task mapping method in order to improve the performance of many-core processors. Evaluation of the proposed method using a detailed software simulator reveals an average performance improvement of at least 4.4%, as compared with standard task mapping using NAS parallel benchmarks. © 2010 IEEE.
