A ferroelectric (Fe)-NAND flash memory with a batch write algorithm and a smart data store to the nonvolatile page buffer is proposed. An enterprise solid-state drive (SSD) for a data center is a future promising market of NAND flash memories. The critical problem for such an enterprise SSD is a slow random write. The write unit in a NAND flash memory is a page, 4-8 KBytes. Because the minimum write unit of the operating system is a sector, 512 Bytes, a random write to write a smaller data than a page size frequently happens, which creates a garbage. As a garbage accumulates, a garbage collection is performed to increase a workable memory capacity. The garbage collection takes as much as 100 ms, which is 100 times longer than a page program time, 800 μ s, and thus causes a serious performance degradation. In the proposed Fe-NAND flash memory, the data fragmentation in a random write is removed by introducing a batch write algorithm where a page buffer in the Fe-NAND flash memory temporarily stores a program data. The memory cell program starts after the program data as much as the page size accumulates in page buffers. As the data fragmentation is eliminated, the SSD performance can double. In addition, the nonvolatile page buffer realizes a power-outage-immune highly reliable operation. With a low program/erase voltage of 6 V and a high endurance of 100 million cycles, the proposed Fe-NAND flash memory is most suitable for a highly reliable high-speed low-power data-center-application enterprise SSD. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, a runtime system termed CODIE is proposed to execute sequential part of programs efficiently in a many-core architecture. All independent processing elements in a many-core architecture use a shared network and off-chip memory. Therefore, contentions on such resources substantially degrade the system performance. On the CODIE system, when a cache miss occurs, the system first initiates a data transfer operation. Next, the system creates a continuation of executing instructions related to the missing data. The continuation is stored into the buffer, and the instructions not related to the missing data are executed subsequently. In other words, data transfer and instruction executions can be performed simultaneously. In this way, the effect of the overhead of the updating cache entry (increased by memory access contention) is tolerated. The results of evaluation show that the proposed CODIE system realizes a 1.86x speed up of the execution of the sequential write/read program on the M-Core architecture at 36 cores and a 1.97x speed up of the execution of the blackscholes(from PARSEC benchmark suite) on the Cell/BE processor with 6 SPEs. © 2010 IEEE.

We are developing a measurement device by means of which gait information can be obtained that cannot be obtained by existent devices. We are also evaluating the effectiveness of the device in rehabilitation programs. The final goal of our work is to realize a space where patients can execute their rehabilitation routines at any time. In this paper, we report the outline of our novel measurement device. That is to say, we describe our realtime measurement technique for measuring the position and angle of the feet to obtain the gait information, as well as our method of presenting the gait information. © 2010 SICE.

Sensor networks supported by recent technological advances in low power wireless communications along with silicon integration of various functionalities are emerging as a critically important computer class that enable novel and low cost applications. There are many fundamental problems that sensor networks research will have to address in order to ensure a reasonable degree of cost and system quality. Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the network's communication energy dissipation. However, selecting of the cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In our previous work, in order to deal with this problem, we proposed a power reduction algorithm for sensor networks based on fuzzy logic and number of neighbor nodes. We call this algorithm F3N. In this paper, we implement a simulation system for clustering algorithms in sensor networks. We evaluate LEACH and F3N by some simulation results. Presently, we have implemented LEACH algorithm in NS-2. However, F3N is implemented in MATLAB. We are working to implement also F3N system in NS-2 in order to compare their performance.

This paper presents a motion control of a stacker crane applying a two-degree-of-freedom control. The two-degree-of-freedom control system consists of a feed forward controller based on an inverse system and a feed back controller with suppressing the vibration effectively and stabilizing. Feedback control of the motion of the stacker crane is derived by considering the time rate of change of the total energy of the system. This approach has the advantage over the conventional methods in the respect that it allows one to deal directly with the system's partial differential equations without resorting to approximations. The paper concludes by presenting some numerical results and experimental results for a special case using a proposed control system. These results show that the two-degree-of-freedom control system can realize faster and precise tracking control of the flexible stacker crane system. © 2009 SICE.

We propose a programmable and scalable traffic management scheme. Programmable traffic management at high-speed routers is difficult because programmability and high-speed packet processing have involved a serious tradeoff. To attain both, the new scheme combines control programs at a control server and simple packet handling functions, such as sampling packet headers and discarding packets, at routers. Therefore, by installing appropriate control programs into the server, a variety of active queue management schemes, per-flow bandwidth management schemes, DoS mitigation schemes, and so on, are achieved. One of the main contributions of this paper is its proposal of a statistical scheme for handling flows. As only a fraction of complete flow information stored at the control server is loaded into the router's flow table and it is replaced cyclically, the proposed scheme scales more than the router's flow table capacity. Our simulation results indicate that the scheme provides efficient traffic management, per-flow WFQ emulation in our example, even with very small flow tables compared to the number of concurrently active flows. Furthermore, we discuss implementation issues with the proposed scheme and reveal that the processing cost at the server and router is sufficiently small for use with 10 Gbps links.

Interpolation for sampled-values with non-uniform sampling points is required for various cases of signal processing. In such a case, sampling functions are useful to interpolate sampled-values and then to generate signals as a linear combination of the sampling basis weighted by a sequence of the sampled-values. This paper proposes sampling functions for non-uniform sampling points, each of which is composed with piecewise polynomials of degree 2. We name the sampling functions the fluency DA functions of degree 2. The fluency DA functions generate smooth and undulate signals from a sequence of sampled-values.
